I remember the original teaser trailer in theaters the summer of 2001. It opened with a bank robbery and the crooks getting away in a helicopter, which stopped with a jolt in mid-air. The camera pulls back to reveal it trapped in a web build between the Twin Towers. Then the title card flashed up. People went nuts. Three months later, the trailer and most of the promotional materials were gone or changed.

When I saw this movie in the cinema I was like 10 and for someone of that age with zero knowledge of that and because I wasn't from the united states' I remember and thought that scene was a reference of something the goblin said before about "in the end everyone will hate you" and it was a proff that he was wrong. Having been a fan since the early 70s, one of my favorite elements of the Peter Parker story was that it never really matters what happened to his parents, it's May and Ben that are most important. Always saw it as sort of a twist on the orphaned protagonist trope, with some non-traditional family representation thrown in. Ahead of its time, as many comics are.
@ergoat
@ergoat 2 жыл бұрын
I wasn't alive in the 70s, but I definitely read a lot of classic Amazing Spider-Man reprints from that era. From this movie, the reboot, the MCU reboot, and all the animated incarnations of Spider-Man post-2001 really leaned heavily into high school aged Peter Parker (with a lot of 27+ year old actors playing 17, but I digress), but from the comics (and the 90s Spider-Man TAS), I've always found the grad school Spidey to be the most interesting and well rounded age/version of the character. I mean, how many times do we have to see the Spider-Man origin story? Do you have different take, or...?

The age gap between Peter and his family made more sense in the early sixties, when Spider-Man first debuted. Comic-book Ben and May grew up during The Great Depression, when contraception wasn’t widely used, so it wasn’t strange for there to be, say, a ten-year spread between the oldest (Ben) and youngest (Peter’s dad) children in a family. Each time the roles have been recast, Ben and May get younger. This is partly because of a youth-bias in Hollywood casting, but also partly to just to make the age gap more in-line with the modern day.
@sebastianjoseph2828
@sebastianjoseph2828 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, if you imagine Ben and May as 60 (Ben is still working, so not yet retirement age), then Peter's father would be 45 if he was 15 years younger (and alive). That's having Peter when he was around 28 or so.
@lanagievski1540

@LarryBonson
@LarryBonson 2 жыл бұрын
Actually it didn't make much sense either in the 60's but no one thought to question it because Spider-Man comics at the time was mostly written for a younger generation and the focus was more on Peter.

@@LarryBonson It did make sense. People had and were used to larger families where kids ages might range 10-12 years between oldest and youngest. Besides, people had kids in their mid 40's and such. Less common, yes, but not unheard of.

@LarryBonson 2 жыл бұрын
@@MST3Killa People had kids in their 20's look it up, the latest they would have kids would be 30's and it was frowed upon especially for women because they would be less fertile. 7:16😄 that’s the thing about Sam Raimi. He was a horror movie director in the 20th century before he did the Spider-Man trilogy. Jump scares and other horror tropes will happen. Sam Raimi is directing the Dr Strange sequel and it has been described as the MCU’s first horror film!

Your supposition, that the first actor whom you see in a role becomes your favorite, is spot-on. Your first experience with something is what you compare later experiences to. The first time I watched "Doctor Who" was with Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor, and, despite my admitting that David Tennant was BORN to play the Doctor, Tom Baker's still my favorite. My best friend's introduction to "Doctor Who" was the Fifth Doctor, played by Peter Davison, so his favorite is the Fifth Doctor - even though the Fourth Doctor is obviously the best.

I do love that line though; “In spite of everything you’ve done for them, eventually they will hate you.” It’s like the antithesis of “With great power, comes great responsibility.” And we see Norman constantly do things selfishly under the guise of “his company”, for “science”, for his “son” if you count the neglected Harry. He has every such reason to have turned out as the Goblin as Peter did to become Spider-Man, the only difference is Norman was powerful and irresponsible for most of his life. And ultimately that’s the only advice he has to fall back on when he’s called to be Norman’s “son” at the end of the movie.

That line, "With great power comes great responsibility," is so quintessentially Spiderman, and is such a good summation that it gets quoted by all kinds of people. Honestly, one of the best things to come out of Stan Lee's work. And I agree about the micro-level of Spiderman; he's always been "Your friendly neighborhood Spiderman!" rather than Thor, the god of lightning. His work just keeping down crime in the local area was always a big part of his life. There are, however, six Spiderman movies for you to consider: I didn't see Into the Spiderverse in your list, and it should definitely be on there, as possibly the best of the bunch!

Spider-Man was released less than a year after 9/11. Being set in New York City, that final shot was really special for audiences. To many, it kicked off the modern comic book movie as a genre. The MCU started only six years after this movie. Tobey Maguire was the first Spider-Man I saw on the big screen. I skipped watching The Amazing Spider-Man movies with Andrew Garfield until recently. I prefer Tom Holland as Spider-Man in the MCU because he portrays both Peter Parker and Spider-Man well as per the comics.

Flash has always been Peter’s bully, in pretty much every iteration, interpretation & adaption; he’s in all the films, including the mcu ones you’ve seen. Usually, they grow into good friends as life goes on; I seem to remember them living together for a bit in the comics.

That "You mess with one of us, you mess with all of us line." is kinda corny and endearing, but it's also an artifact of America recovering from 9/11. It was a VERY patriotic time, hence all the American flags and togetherness. The first teaser trailer actually had the twin towers featured prominently, so there _may_ have been a sequence involving them at some point, but obviously they were excised from the film (and pretty much every piece of media coming out at the time)

Maguire is my Spiderman. Now, like you said, it's impossible to tell if it's because he was my first exposure to the character, or if the OG movies are better. It's impossible to remove the nostalgia when talking about this trilogy.

Tobey was my 1st Spider-Man, and while there's a ton of nostalgia value, I've been able to adapt to each new actor and series along the way. They all have their ups and downs, and I don't know if I could call any of them "best", but I'm really happy with the MCU Spider-Man in Tom Holland.

I’m pretty much the same. For overall Spider-Man movies, I prefer Spiderverse, but for live action, I’d go with Andrew Garfield’s Spidey, though I think Tom Holland is doing a great job in the newer films. And, of course, there will always be the nostalgia factor for the original trilogy, with Tobey. There’s also the fact that this movie showed that a well made, interesting superhero film can attract broad groups of viewers & turn a profit.

@@DeltaAssaultGaming - Tobey at least LOOKED like a teen, though MJ in this one looked about 30. And Andrew Garfield DEFINITELY looked too old to play a teen, as did the leading lady. I hate it when they cast actors in their late 20's and early 30's to play teens... it takes you right out of the film. - PS - Tom Holland was VERY well cast. He was barely out of his teens when that film came out, and he had the physical background (gymnastics) to do a lot of the action.

I see a lot potential in Tom Holland but I thi I the MCU holds him back. They had him ride Tony's coattails for far too long, as if they wanted him to be Iron-Lad rather than Spider-Man. But I put most of that on Disney as they just want to pump out the same formulaic stuff for the sake of ticket sales and merchandise. They've done the same with Thor cause he seems to keep being a man child despite losing his family, his kingdom and fighting to save the entire universe.

@@jessecortez9449 This. Tom Holland is great in the role, but the MCU dis the problem. There's no room for Spiderman to develop as his own person when they have to shoehorn the entirety of the MCU into his story. Tony Stark is the worst thing that happened to him. I felt this way about a lot of the recent MCU movies. They almost reach greatness but then they remember they're a Marvel movie and have to be bogged down with everything that entails.

I can't believe that I forgot that Thanks Giving line, apart from The Bridge Speech, it's one of my favourites.. 'Work was Murder'. 😂 The thing that makes me personally like this version of Spiderman above most (if not all) adaptations.. was a) That intro. And b) The Webbing. Or, lack of Web-shooters. I'm one of those who have never been a fan of The Web-shooters, especially since it REALISTICALLY involves in 90% of what he does.. the 10% is half and half between jumping, and crawling. ...and there was nothing more annoying than watching someone go, "Oh, man.. I'm running low on web-shooters" in The Middle of a Fight. SO Annoying. I also just remembered.. this was the only version where an Uncle Ben says his iconic line word for word too. I thought that was cool too. Anyways.. cool reaction.

I remember the time it got out in theaters and it was absolutely bonkers! There was no hype machine then so everything was very mouth to ear as far as how good the movie was. It really was one of those movies that at the time people were going crazy about. The second one was quite the same if not more! It was the time that superhero movies in general did not have the productive attention that they deserved from the people making them... Blade and Spawn are a good example of that at that time. But when spiderman came out... oh boy.. it was a craze!

In regards to Ben and May’s age, it does actually make some sense in the comics. I can’t remember what issue it was but one had a flashback that established that Ben had to actually take his brother Richard with him on dates with May, with Richard looking like a child while Ben looked to be a decade older than him if not a few years more. If we assume Peter was born when Richard was 35 (since he was a fully trained CIA agent in the comics it seems likely Peter was born when Richard was in his 30s), Ben would have been 45 and at the time Peter got his powers (17/18 in this film, 15 in comics) Ben would be in his 60s. The actors for May and Ben here are much older than that but still it’s not that impossible for them to be in their 60s.

This movie came out not long after 9/11. There were advertisements showing the twin towers with webs between them leading up to the terror attacks and with this whole movie taking place in New York City, it has a special place in a lot of people's minds. They took out the scenes and stopped the promos of the twin towers because they thought people would be too upset by it (probably correct assumption at the time) and added scenes of New Yorkers thumbing their noses at the bad guys. The whole 'you mess with one of us you mess with all of us' part.
