Welcome to our Spider-Man (2002) Movie Reaction! This is our first time watching this film in a very very long time and we are beyond excited to share this experience with you guys. It's a film that holds a very special place in our hearts and one many of you have requested.
Spider-Man is a 2002 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man. Directed by Sam Raimi from a screenplay by David Koepp, it is the first installment in Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy. The film stars Tobey Maguire, Willem Dafoe, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Cliff Robertson, and Rosemary Harris. The story follows timid teenager Peter Parker, who gains superhuman abilities after being bitten by a genetically engineered spider. He adopts the masked persona "Spider-Man" and begins to fight crime in New York City, facing the malevolent Green Goblin in the process.
We hope that you enjoy our reactions, commentary and review as we discuss the film's incredible special effects, suspenseful storyline, and unforgettable characters. From the quips and memorable lines like "You know, I'm something of a scientist myself" to the iconic fight scenes between the Green Goblin and Spiderman there's so much to talk about and we can't wait to share it with all of you!

There's one thing Harry didn't hear when Norman was talking to Peter at the graduation: Norman is caring and supportive to Peter BECAUSE of Harry. Norman knows that Peter has always been there for Harry (one thing Norman himself cannot do because of his job), he takes Peter in the family because Harry sees him as a brother.

I remember Raimi made it a point to always have Peter get beat the hell up because audiences loved it; they loved when he was able to come back from it. What a total classic. Still the best interpretation of Spidey onscreen, and one that makes him a truly loveable uncool dork, which is what Peter always was. Also: Elfman’s theme is still top tier.

Something I really like is that the hero and villain are being created simultaneously but separately. Not the hero accidentally creating the villain or the villain accidentally creating the hero. The only coincidence is that it is happening at the same time, which adds a very subtle layer for the audience to think about if it is fate intervening or it was all by chance.

17:45 I believe Sam Raimi once said something along the lines that while he was able to accept that Peter Parker is smart enough to make web shooters, he had a harder time accepting that this Peter Parker had the resources to make them, as he's a kid in high school with no job. I think May and Ben even have a small scene where they're talking about how things might be financially tough for a bit. I really like when Spider-Man makes his web fluid (don't really know why tbh) but I actually really appreciate the level of thought that they put into the world building with thought processes like that.

I was born in 2000s, so I grew up with a Tobey Maguire Spider-Man-themed bedroom, watching these films religiously and playing the tie-in video games that expanded on their stories. For example, the Spider-Man (2002) game followed the events of the film featuring the Green Goblin but also included additional villains like Shocker, Vulture, and Scorpion to add more content to the game. You could also unlock the Alex Ross Spider-Man and Green Gobin designs that were never used in the film but he designed as idea's for the suits. Though his Spider-Man suit design for the film would later inspire Superior Spider-Man in the comics. Spider-Man 2 (2004) also had an amazing tie-in game that introduced some of the best web-swinging mechanics in gaming history, which have since served as inspiration for every Spider-Man game that followed including the amazing Marvel's Spider-Man PlayStation games. In previous games, the web-swinging felt more like flying, as the webs would just attach to the sky. However, Spider-Man 2 introduced actual physics to the swinging, with webs attaching to the nearest object, allowing you to swing and release whenever you wanted. If there was nothing to swing from, you'd simply fall until you found something to attach to, creating a much more dynamic and realistic experience.

Ari, just wanted to drop you a quick comment and say I love the channel! You and Denise are killing it! What I love about your channel is both of your experiences and knowledge base of filmmaking and how you're able to pick out certain technical details and aspects of the film others would miss. Everything I wanted to say, you and Denise touched on in the outro. Keep it up, you two!

Just rewatched this the other day and it still holds up so well. Sam Raimi’s love for the character shines, the cast is great, the story is well written and I care about all the characters, the effects and web swinging were groundbreaking at the time and still look great for the most part, and Danny Elfman’s score is so beautiful and iconic. An all time great!

Spider-Man was my introduction to the world of comics and superheroes. I was very young when I saw this in theaters and had a great time until Spider-Man 2 blew me away. This and the sequel hold a special place in my heart. Spider-Man means so much to me as a kid and even still as an adult.

@mrbrianandrewsmith lol sorry but this will be worse: My birthday is on Dec. 26. I was 3 when the first film came out back in May 2002, and Spider-Man 2 was released in June 2004 before I turned 6. So I saw Spider-Man 1 when was 3 and Spider-Man 2 when I was 5.

*HELL YEAH!!!* 🔥 I remember when I was just a wee lad back when this was released. Me and my family went to a mall for my birthday that week. Along the tall wall inside the mall was a huge poster for the movie. My aunt noticed me staring at it for a minute and asked me if I wanted a cake for my birthday or watch Spiderman in the theaters. I chose the latter. One of the greatest choices of my life! This movie holds a special place in my heart. ❤️ I also collected every photo of Spiderman whenever he was in the newspaper that month.

All through my childhood, like most, I adored Spider-Man. I grew up in a country where comic books were incredibly rare. But I had a vhs tape of the first season of the animated series. I watched it a hundred times. The movie came out when I was 11 years old. It was such a blessing. When, after the theater I walked home, I felt a slight emptiness because I didn't even know what else I could want, I was so happy to see that movie. Toby is forever the best spider man for me.

The problem with The Amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2 along with Homecoming and Far From Home is they just didn't had the heart like Sam Reimi's Spider-Man movies had. Don't get me wrong they are still good Spider-Man movies but it felt more like the CGI had the upper hand while Sam Reimi's Spider-Man movies had everything you wanted in a good movie balanced well together, story, character development, difficult choices, action and drama. Even with Spider-Man 3 when Sony intervened with Sam Reimi's directing, you could still feel it. No Way Home was just a nostalgia trip done very well and it is 1 of my favs however Spider-Man 2 was a superb sequel and still the best Spider-Man movie to this date! Can't wait for the reaction on that 1. 🕷🕸

I love that the 2 of you always seem to get all the layers of the movies you watch and you also know when to talk and when to just take in the movie. Keeps me coming back. Even though I was an adult when this came out, being in the theater for it was everything 10 year old me wanted out of Spider-Man. Everyone involved with this movie hit it out of the park.

There’s so much more to his swinging than what they show in the films! The fact that the dude is calculating speed and angles to avoid colliding is insane! He’s just casually doing it, goes to show how much of a genius he actually is.

This film is the first successful live action depiction of Spider-Man. Hollywood tried a live action show in the ‘70’s but the practical effects weren’t enough to truly bring this iconic hero to life. Patience paid off. All the elements that were needed, finally became available to do it right. The success of these elements bringing a comic book hero to life paved the way for more heroes to finally live. Always fun watching your videos. ✌️😉💕

This struck me as a somewhat dark, serious movie when I first saw it, compared to other depictions, and while the cheese is more noticeable these days I feel like this still holds true. Apart from the increasingly brutal fight scenes and Norman being a sympathetic character as well as the villain, what strikes me now is that unlike newer films, including Batman begins, it doesn't end with the hero entirely comfortable with the place they've found; it goes out of its way to hang the consequences of everyone's actions over the ending, and leaves all the uncertainty in full view; Peter outright views his powers as as much a curse as a gift. It's a really unusual move for a comic book adaptation that I don't think has really been repeated since

I saw it during my first year of high school when I was really going through a hard time so seeing a superhero movie like this was what I needed at the time. Every time I see that ending while he is saying this is my blessing, my curse, and then ends with I'm Spiderman, and then he is flying through the city, it always gets me teary. I feel the same emotions as when I first saw it. Still love this movie so much. The 2nd one is my favorite though. But the Green Goblin was perfectly casted and Tobey as Peter, perfect.
