Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is SO overrated.

This will probably be my most disliked video, but I'd like to get out ahead of things and just say, while watching this video back, it sounded extremely negative. I've been trying not to communicate in such a caustic way but I made this right after watching the movie. I like to sit with my thoughts for a while before I make a video about them and for whatever reason, I didn't do that here. This was actually done a week ago but I was still deciding whether to publish it. While I don't disagree with my feelings on the film, I would have preferred to say it in a less aggressive way. I hate writers elevating characters more than what’s needed. Pure chance is always more relatable than destiny. It’s why I hate the court of owls killing Batman’s parents rather a “punk with a gun.”

Completely! The problem is, when a character gets very popular, new writers want them to be as important within the fictional world as they are in the real world but that makes them less relatable. They keep trying to fix things that are not broken.

2 questions 1. How would you feel if the main conflict of the movie is that the spider from a different dimension biting Miles instead of the cannon events conflict ? 2. How would you feel if Multiverse stories were told in a crossover between two franchises ( like Batman vs Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for example ) instead of multiple versions of one character ?

1. That was good enough, honestly. Should have stuck with that plot point and left the canon stuff out. 2. I like those because the story is completely new. There is no precedent for it, and it's just a crossover essentially. Which takes away all the weird rules and infinite other universes you have to invent and navigate to make it all make sense.

I found the end of the movie was promising. Especially because of the twist. In the world without Spider-Man, Miles is the Prowler. This shows the importance Spider-Man as an inspiration for Miles, but also questions the idea of predistination. In a different universe Miles can be a villain. There is also the suggestion that Miles is different because he was bitten by a spider from another universe. Therefore, destiny was changed, by random chance. Also, since Miguel is the antagonist, and Miles is going to try and save his dad anyway, Miguel is probably going to be wrong in some way. The question is can the final movie resolve the story in a satisfying way. I also wonder if this is in part the writers rebelling against the idea of canon events? It looks like the moral of the story will be that Miles is a different character than Peter and has his own new story.

Have to say the most interesting events for me occurred in that last act as well. The moment he realises that he was sent to the wrong universe was clever. Loved the suspense there and the reveal. I actually had this conversation with my friends and said IF they just stuck with the spider biting Miles from a different universe making him an anomaly, and that was the crux of the entire conflict, I would have been willing to go along with it. I think the whole canon event subplot hurt the movie. That's a very optimistic view, but I would hope it is true because that's not a trend I would like to see encouraged. The only other thing that would somewhat repair the film is if Miguel brainwashed all the Spider-People but that is unlikely. Very unfortunate that they all bought into that idea.

When I watched second movie I had a feeling that something wrong, but I couldn't say what exactly, and supposed it to be larger scale of location, story etc. But now pretty agreeing with you, on exact same reason I hate bat-family from new-52 for The Signal, Gotham-Girl, Bluebird, Batwing and yare yare yare. For me its just useless characters who was created without any purpose but to sell more books on association with famous Batman.

@@TuMa0707 That's very fair. I honestly thought I would come out of Across the Spider-Verse with a very positive opinion but what I found was something I was very passionately against. No promises but I will try to avoid watching things that trigger such videos 🤕

You definitely hit canon events right on the head, these dumb Multiverse rules have been really ruining stories like anchor beings or incursions. I speculated that based on the title of the third movie beyond the spider verse that Miles will meet the Master Weaver the one who watches over the spiderverse and destroy any universes that don’t follow his criteria of being a Spider-Man story. My guess Miles will convince him to relinquish control and then all the spider people in the Multiverse could do whatever they want without their universe being destroyed making Miles the savior of the spiderverse. I could be absolutely dead wrong on this and that’s perfectly fine but they really got to write something that either proves or disproves Canon events.

@Manlker that's a really plausible take, I think. Whenever you write these big sprawling multiverse stories that get very messy, you have to find a way to wrap it all up in some equally convoluted way. This seems like a logical conclusion. Or they could do something even sillier and more meta that will not really resolve all the hanging threads and annoy me some more 😅 I feel like that "anomaly" status of Miles will come into play somehow.

@@TheMelMan I could see the “anomaly” being used as since Miles was bitten by a spider not from his universe and not meant for him, he’s not under the same radar as the other spider people. But I still have problems with that as popular Spider-Men like spectacular Spider-Man is written so out of character that it elevates Miles which sucks

That's the danger of not having proper oversite of characters in these multiverses. I remember back to the Marvel and DC crossover miniseries. Back then there was so much reverence for the characters that there had to be so many discussions, disagreements and almost cancelling the crossover altogether unless the characters were treated respectfully. These days they just retcon a whole very popular character without a thought and nobody checks them on it. I wonder who the editorial oversite even falls on anymore.

⁠@@TheMelMan and another thing about canon events is that it makes Peter Parker, The Spider-Man, just another spider person in the multiverse. His story is no longer unique or special because any type of major event in this life every other spider person has already been through it. It devalues if this to be my destiny where Peter lifts the heavy rubble off of him, doesn’t matter everyone else has done it too. It makes death less of a tragedy, something that can happen out of nowhere but more of a predetermined outcome that Spider-Man has no way of stopping and if he does it leads to the death of the universe apparently. Imagine telling someone that all their struggles don’t have any value because other people like you else has done it and that they were also predetermined
