Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends is... just okay! We dive into looking back at the some of the most iconic Spider-Man tv shows, Spider-Man (1981) and Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends. Let me know your thoughts on both of these shows and which one I should review next, Spider-Man (2017) or OG Spider-Man (1967)

That was why the network requested partners for Spider-Man. They didn’t think Spidey talking to himself like he did in the comics would work on network Saturday mornings. Marvel believed otherwise, which is why they did the solo Spider-Man series at the same time.

I agree the plots are repetitive but this wasn't a cartoon meant for binge watching, I recommend watching one episode a day to stretch it out, this was my favorite Saturday morning cartoon growing up and in 1982 the cartoon was paired up with an Incredible Hulk cartoon as well that was just as good. Also just to correct you a bit the solo Spider-Man cartoon was voiced by Ted Schwartz and the Amazing Friends Spider-Man was voiced by Dan Gilvezan as to why this decision is unknown.

The great thing about watching this series as a kid during the early 80s was that it was doled out one episode per week. It forced you as a kid to appreciate it in the moment and make you wait until the next Saturday to watch the next episode. This, along with Challenge of the Superfriends, were the must see cartoons as a kid.

I’m 52 years old…Spider-Man & his Amazing Friends…premiered when I was in grade school..so you probably caught when they repackaged it to a block probably with the Incredible Hulk series that came out a couple of years now..at the time, Marvel Comics was what we read more than DC …but they didn’t have as many cartoon series as DC with the Superfriends basically dominating most of the late 70’s to the early 80’s…Firestar/Angelica Jones was created for the show and she didn’t exist in the Comics …the special appearances by Iron Man, the X-Men, Sun Fire, Dr Doom, Captain America, and etc…were the highlight to me…this was before Cartoon Network …so the Saturday Morning cartoon experience was all we had…Batman the Animated Series and the X-Men cartoon series on Fox during the late 90’s…really raised the bar for animation on TV…the voice acting, the character designs, the background art, storylines, and etc..were so good…I think that younger viewers can not appreciate the cartoons from the late 70’s to late 80’s because they are used to seeing so many well produced cartoons from the late 90’s to the mid 2000’s and 2010’s!

I get what you’re saying, but I have to disagree. As someone who was a child when these cartoons were on in real time, they’re actually more accurate than a lot of the modern Spider-Man cartoons, and even the movies. Plus, it was a different time. At that time, they were only worried about making entertaining stories that they can put on television and sell Kids commercials around them. It wasn’t all this political/social crap that we got today.

Betty Brandt was Peter's girlfriend in the comics between Gwen & MJ when the original cartoon was on tv. She was supposed to be the love interest on the show but they couldn't write any good romantic storylines for them and still have time for a villain, some of the stories were short, around 10-11 minutes and quite a few had two separate stories per episode, so their relationship was scrapped for action scenes. Betty is the forgotten love interest that nobody remembers.

I grew up with the 67, but they called the 67 collection now with Paul Saul is the voice of Spider-Man and they did four years and then the amazing Spider-Man and his amazing friends came out after Stanley retired from marvel comics. I also like spider woman that aired for two seasons from 78 to 79 on ABC And Stanley was still working for marvel comics in New York City at the time but to me those are the three best animated series. I did not like the one they made on Fox later, although the way they ended it and having Madame Webb there was pretty good with Stanley, making an animated appearance, and of course, Matt Webb‘s voice was, of course, Stanley, his wife Voice

Very entertaining video. Spider-Man is my favorite superhero, hence my avatar. I've watched every Spidey animated series and, my conclusion is, where you rank these series depends on which generation you're part of. I was 7 when the Spidey 1981 and Amazing Friends series debuted. Amazing Friends is my favorite Spider-Man animated series, hands down. A lot of characters had their first animated appearance on this series, like Wolverine, which is very important historically. I can see why people who saw the 90's series or Spectacular in the late 2000's would prefer those, if that was their first Spider-Man animated series. And, over all, they may be better, in terms of quality but, for kids in the 80's, waking up on Saturday mornings wondering which villain or hero would possibly be on this week's episode was very exciting!

This is a very interesting take that I haven’t thought about! I was born in 01 and grew up on the 90’s and a LITTLE of Amazing Friends, I don’t have a lot of memories of each. All throughout middle school and early high school I watched Ultimate Spider-Man and that is my favorite show (even with its MANY FLAWS). It wasn’t until I got to college that I watched Spectacular for the first time and I loved it. I agree with what you’re as your favorite might be what you grew up on, but there is definitely a quality difference between comparing certain series. That being say there’s also a difference between quality and personal choice/taste!

The odd combo came because, as you said, the Human Torch was originally supposed to be the "fire" characters. Spider-Man and the Human Torch--roughly contemporary in age and both doing what they're doing when very young--had been pals in the comics for years. Marvel Team-Up, which had been around for about 8 or 9 years by then, was conceived as a Spider-Man/Human Torch team-up book, then evolved into a book where one or the other teamed up with other characters. Eventually, it was mostly became a team-up-with-Spider-Man book. Iceman was a contrast to the Torch. The rights with the Human Torch were a bit of a mess at the time--the Fantastic Four cartoon from 3 years earlier had to replace the Torch with a robot for the same reason--so he was dropped. The solo Spider-Man cartoons that were part of this package were dropped relatively quickly; they were replaced by the animated Incredible Hulk, and that, as I recall, was the package until both ended.

It's a misconception that 81 solo series debuted at the same time as Spider-Friends. It didn't happen. Wiki & IMDB are wrong. I interviewed Larry Houston, director of X-Men: TAS, who was a storyboard artist on Spider-Friends. He confirmed that the 81 series started production first, but put on the back burner when Friends sold to NBC. Houston said that even once the solo show had its animation finished, it languished on the shelf with no final editing, voice/music tracks, etc... A network would never let Marvel sell a competing Spider-Man show to the syndicated market. I don't think it aired in US until AFTER the SF run, probably in Marvel Action Universe in the mid-80s. But I have seen someone claim to have seen it before that in the UK.

@@codycoxx you’re welcome. And what’s crazy is that every one of the animated shows from the 60s through even that one that used to be on Disney XD actually gets the Parker character more accurate than any of the live action films/shows. To me, the live action versions seem to only hammer at home and aspect or period of time in Peter Parker‘s life. I know this is off-topic, but if I had to rank them or describe them, this is how I would describe them: Spider-Man from the 1970’s - Nicholas Hammond’s version seems to be a “what if“ as he gets his powers when he’s a college student rather than high school. He’s pretty much an adult. It seems to be his own thing and while I really loved it as a kid, I see the flaws in it as an adult. While they certainly couldn’t have done his more high profile villains, they certainly could’ve did his more mortal villains, such as the kingpin, the enforcers, the Chameleon, or Kraven the hunter! It’s its own thing and Hammond does do a good job portraying Peter Parker. Tobey Maguire Spider-Man - it seems to me that this version seems to focus more on the 1960s era of the character. Albeit with a modern twist. Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man - he feels like he’s more from the ultimate Spider-Man universe as he has a bit more edge than previous live action incarnations. Tom Holland is Spider-Man - he’s definitely the modern version. And definitely a highschooler!

Bro you grew up in a time when the animation cinematography and Technology of a cartoon show was better. So of course when you look back at something that you did not grow up on you wouldn't be that impressed you're going from better to worse rather than good to better

11:30, Frankie Raye/Nova, they could have used her in the tv show instead of Firestar. Same powers as Human Torch and she dated him for awhile before going off to outer space because she was having a hard time adjusting to her powers, returning as one of Galactus' Heralds. She could also have been a good choice in the MCU instead of the Shalla Bal/Silver Surfer who only appeared once in the 616 in an issue of What If...? And since Frankie also dated Norrin Radd while she was a Herald and it was he who caused her to leave Galactus' service it's an easy transition into introducing the real Surfer as his new Herald. Galactus has like 2 dozen Heralds, why Shalla-Bal? That makes no sense.

Speaking of Galactus' Heralds, the Asgardian Destroyer armour with the Power Cosmic needs to be in the MCU as well.

They didn't use the Human Torch because they thought kids might light themselves on fire just like the Fantastic Four 1978 cartoon that didn't last too long added HERBIE the robot instead of him, not because of licensing.

dude, watch your OWN generation's stuff. I'm in my 50s. This was made for Gen X. When i was a kid, I wasnt watching cartoons that came out 20-30 years before I was born. That would be ludicrous black and white Disney animation. "Steamboat Willy." We didnt like it. It was before our time. Now here YOU are, trying to usurp the pop culture from someone else's culture. What cartoons came out when YOU were a child? Watch THOSE. Stick with THOSE. That's your people. That's your culture. If you generation is putting out crap, that's too bad. Some generations are lucky and some are not. Your criticisms sound like a person with a new car crapping on a 1967 split-window corvette. "what a piece of junk, it doesnt even have airbags." Yeah? And? Dont buy it, then.

Wait a minute! You didn't watch Bugs Bunny, Tom & Jerry, and Scooby-Doo? I was born in 82' and I watched all of that and more. Being an "80's Baby" I felt like we had it the best. So many new and inventive things coming out and the best of yesteryear still in heavy rotation. Probably, the greatest time for watching entertainment.

I didn't watch Spider-Man but I did watch Amazing Friends. I didn't collect Spider-Man titles except Web Of Spider-Man around that time, I had a few like the time he took out Galactus' Herald Firelord by mistake, he only came to Earth for some pizza and got his ass kicked for no reason, poor guy. I did collect X-Men and the show had Iceman. I wasn't a big fan of Firestar, she was forced in as a character because of the legal issues surrounding Human Torch, the same issues that had him replaced with HERBIE the robot on the FF cartoon, basically Marvel didn't want to pay Carl Burgos royalties for the name & likeness of the original Jim Hammond Human Torch.

MJ was considered as the third roommate but there were issues concerning Peter and MJ living together and dating while they weren't married. Firestar is like they said "Well, we can't use Human Torch and we can't use MJ BUT we can mush them together into a brand new character with both of their traits."
@ll7868
@ll7868 5 ай бұрын
Angel was also a roomie consideration, he and Iceman were on The Defenders together around that time, or was it The Champions?... anywho, Angel is kind of a boring character, his wings look really cool but his uses are limited and there was the ordeal of animating him in flight.

@@codycoxx Carl died in 1984, if they'd only waited a year they could have used Human Torch, Carl willed his characters to Marvel when he died that's why Torch can be used in movies and tv now.
