Yeah, it's cool and all the keeo themselves strong and all... but Pete is constantly trapped in a cycle of neverending suffering that keeps getting retconed to be "hip with today's youth". If we account Peter's suffering in real life time, my man would be living some shitty life for 60 years. One where the "gods choosing his fate" (writers) always come up with a means to make him suffer no matter what. Like, yeah, it's cool and all other versions of Peter who also have it worst try to cheer him up by being pricks to him... but it just comes off as "sounds like "skill issue" on your part, Peter" when you've seen the guy suffer one way or the other for decades.

The worst part about that conversation in which “god says Peter’s life is not that bad” is that what the One Above All actually tells Peter, is that the reason his life is so bad, is to counter balance all of the GOOD that Peter puts out into reality on his own. Like… rather than reward him for making existence better for everyone else, his life MUST be horrible to make sure reality stays in balance. Which sucks.

Which, honestly is an absolutely shitty explanation and if the writers are trying to reference Taoism and the Yin Yang concept it's an absolutely horrific understanding of it. First off, it effectively eliminated any point for Peter to do good anyway because it means enough evil has to happen to balance it out (unless they're trying to paint Peter as the sacrificial lamb invoking Christianity). Taosim doesn't even necessarily push the concepts of good and evil, or at least not a Western understanding of it. Yin and Yang is a balance between order and chaos, dark and light, but it's not good and evil. Too much order is tyranny and stagnation. Too much chaos is unpredictability to the point of it becoming pointless to work towards anything better, because there is no stability upon which to build. Too much light blinds just as easily as too little. "Good" in that philosophy is to be found when elements of existence are properly balanced, and working in functional harmony. Not only does it show a misunderstanding of the concepts they're invoking, it also misunderstands reality itself. Doing good is legitimately the best long term strategy for your life. Short term you'll likely suffer for it, but played out over time you build a better environment around you. There's an element of faith to that, but it's like working out in a way. The first few days are painful, but over time it gets easier and you start to see snowballing benefits, with perhaps the occasional hitch. Doing good is largely the same, and the authors' failure to incorporate that concept just to keep Spidey suffering is hack writing at its worst.

@@joshuawillingham6363 Just want to say I appreciate this thorough response. Didn't know the details of Taoism but knew that the way they described Pete's "balance" was missing something major and made no sense.
@joshuawillingham6363
@joshuawillingham6363 9 ай бұрын
@@Kagrynac I appreciate it. I'm not a deep expert or anything, but I've looked into most major philosophies and religions at one point or another. While some of them are certainly silly, a lot of them have really cool concepts and ideas that are applicable to most of our lives. It always irritates me when an author who has a "hey I googled this and read the first paragraph" understanding of a concept promotes it as some deep underpinning to their story. I have no problem with people using, and even bending the concepts in cool ways, but if you're going to yoink ancient wisdom for a story it's probably a good idea to have more than the shallowest level understanding of it.

@thesamsquatch2704

It would certainly be refreshing. Giving him some happiness in life doesn’t necessarily mean ruining the character or never challenging him again - even his happiness could be a challenge because it takes work to maintain, all the more so if you’re a superhero who has to spend time every day saving people and dozens to hundreds of supervillains are out there every day plotting to kill you. He really deserves just a tiny slice of lasting happiness and just a chance to evolve as a character. Marrying MJ is a perfect example - speaking from experience, marriage is a source of daily joy, but it’s also HARD. Doubtless more so if you have to balance superhero responsibilities on top of all of life’s ‘normal’ ones. But it would give him something to smile about. Something personal to protect and cherish. And it would assuage some of the fatigue we feel from seeing him constantly miserable. Sorry for the essay 😅.

Their was one. It was a universe where every hero had the best outcomes to their lives. The world was basically a utopia. Unfortunately all that good fortune made that Peter an asshole and honestly a monster. He lured Peters from other universes and drained them of both their life and power to make him stronger and our Peter stops him and accidentally kills the evil Peter. He goes to hell for his crimes and resurrects as the Ghost Rider or as he’s called in this universe “The Ghost Spider”

Because Spider-Man wouldn't be nearly as heroic as he is if his life was completely put together. Part of what makes him great is that he always looks to help others when he should be helping himself first. He always puts others before his own self, and it's that selflessness that really drives the character. At any point, he could just give up the mask and live his own life, but people would get hurt if he did and he knows he can't let that happen. Edit: I do like seeing Peter happy, but it needs to feel like it was hard-fought and earned like Peter B Parker in Into/Across the Spiderverse.

I think his TAS from hte 90s actually gives closure to his character and a happy ending. When he met Stan Lee he said he didn't want to change anything about himself, that he's enjoying himself. And finding MJ with Madam-Web is pretty much a guaranteed thing so no need to show that. What mattered was his conversation with Stan Lee what gave him the happy ending you're talking about. Probably the only time i seen this happening.

The problem is the fact that Spidey is popular so just like any popular hero, the studio forces the writers to come with a new story every month or so, forcibly. Writer comes in and out, and the working rule is; Put Spidey into suffering and drama. Make it as eye-catching as possible for better or for worse. Then from time to time they do some "self-aware" moment like this to lightly gaslight the audiance into, again, slowing down with the critizing on the conics. But Idk why marvel comic fans complain all the time but keep buying. Like you *showing your support,* basically telling the industry that the formula is working and you wanna see more.

I can see the conversation now. Spider-man - Why does my life suck? others - Because the people in charge of the Marvel want you to suffer. They either get writers who hate you to write you or when they get a writer to give you what everyone else wants they cancel the series and then laugh at anyone who thinks Peter Parker is allowed to be happy!

He's life is bad because instead of solving his problems, he helps other people, even when he could let cops do their work. He puts the mask to run from the bad memories. But the more you run the worse it gets. People you love die, but life keeps going for everyone. Spider is not worse than your everyday guy, he's just worse than other heroes.

There were many times where he could be happy like marrying, Mary Jane only for him missed the wedding just because he was doing Spider-Man stuff. He could have a decent life with jobs and a home only for him to lost them due to his life as Spider-Man.
