The reason he wasn't 100 percent on board is because he comes from a theater/ indie movie background and doing this kind of movie isn't considered to be serious work. I imagine his entire entourage gave him shit for doing the movie, cause it's a silly movie. He did it because he wanted to dabble in a large action film out of curiosity.

If you made a movie as goofy/campy as this one, it would be considered a bad movie. But after this movie, we created a genre of films that have over-the-top action and goofiness that people actually enjoy. And it wasn't just reserved for superhero films.
