I constantly get asked to explain Spider-Man's webbing. Are the created by mechanical web shooters, or are they created organically by Peter himself? The answer is both, and that's what we're learning about today! The story of how Spider-Man created his web shooters, how he gained web powers, how he lost those web powers, and why the Spider-Man movies went the directions they did!

I read that the reason Raimi went with the organic web shooters was because on top of event else, it seemed too farfetched that a teen, even one as brilliant as Peter, could create a substance like that with limited resources that a multimillion dollar company couldn't with nearly unlimited resources.

Except spiders don’t have the ability to shoot webs like that, NOR do they come from their wrists, hence it makes more sense to have web shooters. Also then it makes sense to have different types of web shooting abilities

Almost no other person actually knows how the web fluid is made and what chemicals exactly are. Also, A multi-million dollar company was what made the webs for Amazing Spiderman (Oscorp). I'll be honest, I grew up watching the Sam Raimi spidey movies and I was shocked as a kid to see that Spider-Man didn't have the ability to shoot webs out of his wrists in other media. My vote goes to organic web shooters! Web spinning is the most iconic ability spiders(and Spidey himself) have and it's strange that that would be the only ability left out of his natural(or rather, mutated) repitoire.

While I do prefer the organic webbing a little more than the mechanical web shooters, I feel like there should be a good mix of both. He has the ability to shoot out webs naturally but uses the shooters for proper aiming and can use some of the organic webs for any special kind of web weapons and gadgets.

Well as a kid watching the movies I thought organic webs were the norm so I'm partial to them, and it makes sense a hero called SPIDER-MAN would have natural webbing to his repertoire of powers. But the web-shooters do allow for more moments of tension and cleverness. Still gonna have to go with organic though.

How much would it cost for more webbing? In amazing spider-man he mixed that shyt up at school. I don’t wanna site that as definitive anything, but he is just a kid when he first develops them and developing a compound that works like webbing let alone 2 devices that not only shoot them but can be made to alter the nozzle for different web settings as well as the compound itself for specific types of webbing like that hydro man concrete stuff. I’m not knocking your opinion I’m just genuinely curious how much this one aspect of his life is costing him. Between normal life and spidey life he’s gotta choose between keeping the power on or food on the table or a potential life should the shooters go dry in action.

Maybe his body can produce its own webbing but he has the same weaknesses that real spiders have Very few spiders shoot their web out and the ones that do can only go so far before they have to be guided by the wind and producing too many webs in a single day can be a costly thing for spiders to do Maybe peter creates web shooters and web cartridges to solve those problems and he refills the cartridges every now and then using some kind of siphon system

Those comments who said that the web should comes out from the butt of spiderman are so fucking stupid. The radioactive spider gave him the ABILITY of spider not the ANATOMY of a spider. Human bodies and spiders are different and it more make sense that Spiderman could naturaly produce his web because it seperates him from other superhero. If the webshooter could be replicate, then there is possibilities that anyone could be spiderman. I know that web shooter shows how much a smart man is peter parker, but lets be honest, the first thing that comes to our mind if we talk Spiderman is his webs and acrobatic skills and not his intelligent mind. Because if we are talking about intellectual skills, we have ironman, batman, captain america and so on.. that is why Spiderman having organic web is the best choice.

I've always thought that Peter adjusted the web shooter's trigger in a way that would require his super hero strength to make it work, thus preventing him from accidentally shooting while closing his fingers to punch or to hold something. I remember a comic story when he had his shooters stolen, and there's a scene that shows the person struggling to make the shooter work, then finally he makes it work by hammering it really hard and accidentally getting stuck by the web that comes out.

A few of you have commented about "The Other" story arc where he apparently get's organic webbing again. I have skimmed through it but haven't found when this happens in the story. Admittedly, it's a 12-part story, so I could have easily missed it. If you know the exact issue when this happened, please let me know and I'll credit you on Monday's video!

I prefer mechanical web shooters as they do seem to make more sense - If Spidey's webs were organic, they should take months to dissolve and his spinnerets should form in his butt. If spinnerets did form in his arms, they should break his veins. Also, spiders weave webs, they don't shoot them.

Spider-Man is my favorite and when I got into comics about a year ago I bought the trade paperbacks of his most important story arcs. The Other was one of them because I heard ALOT that that was when he got his organic webs. I hadn't heard of the Spider-Queen giving it to him so I'll look into that now. Anyways, The Other story arc collects Amazing Spider-Man #525-528, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #1-4, and Marvel Knights Spider-Man. The TBP took me a while to find but I love it cuz it shows his marriage with MJ and has connections to Morlun and to the Kaine Scarlet Spider run, which I also have and LOVE!

+NerdSync The story of the arc is that Peter is dying from some sort of incurable disease and is searching for a cure but no one has the answer. In issue 526 of Amazing Spider-Man, Morlun catches him in public and beats him an inch from death, like dude rips out his EYE and leaves his face unrecognizable. But he doesn't feed on him there, as his kind does to spider totems. in the next issue Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #3 Peter is taken to the hospital where the Captain America, Iron-Man, and some other Avengers go to check on his condition and MJ is on her way there. The doctors have isolated and temporarily stabilized Peter but his is 'prematurely fatal.' MJ goes into the room where Peter is in and catches Morlun about to feed on him and tries to stop it. Morlun easily puts her down and is about to kill her. At that time, Peter wakes up and attacks Morlun, but it really isn't Peter. 'The Other' is what is referred throughout the arc as the like the primal essence of Peter's spider powers and it is trying to convince him to imbrace it and become 'The Other.' Anyways, Peter kills Morlun, for the second time I believe, and then dies in MJ's arms. In Marvel Knights Spider-Man # 21 Peter's body disappears from the Avengers Tower and in Amazing Spider-Man #527 Peter is shown in a cocoon thing battling with 'The Other' internally and is eventually is reborn, and this part is IMPORTANT, stronger in almost every way and has organic webs. After that arc finishes I believe Civil War follow, then One More Day. Yes, he does unload his webs on Iron-Man in One More Day and quote:"ever since my webs went internal, I've wondered what would happen I let fly and didn't hold anything back..." (AS-M 544).

The biggest argument against the web shooters is the character Silk. For those who don't know, Cindy Moon (a.k.a. Silk) was bitten by the same spider that bit Peter Parker, and she can create her own organic webs. If she can make her own webs, why can't Peter? Shouldn't their powers be identical if they come from the same source?

That always happens though, if anyone other than Peter gets bit they get different (and usually more numerous powers) same thing happened to Miles Morales in the Ultimate Universe. The Web Shooters are iconic at this point, no need to get rid of them.

It depends how much the bite changes the recipient's DNA. The bite could also provide stingers or mutated them to a man-spider. The source of the power affects different people differently. Sometimes, the same person could be affected differently. In a different Marvel universe, the bite turned Parker into a man-spider. Mostly determined by luck, aka whatever the writer decides.

I personally like the web-shooters better. The main argument for organic web is “it’s a spider power, why wasn’t it transmitted to him by the spider along with the rest?” Well, what I like about Spider-man is that the spider didn’t give him “spider powers”, rather it enhanced his own abilities (sight, hearing, reflexes...) and increased them so he has the same amount of that as a spider has. Even wall-climbing is a potential ability, if you look at professional rock climbers they are able to hold onto almost flat cliffs by the tip of their fingers, that latent ability has also been developed by the spider bite. Not being able to shoot web organically preserves Peter’s humanity and makes him more easy to identify with since it means he doesn’t have a silk-producing organ inside his...wrists? I guess. (Also, where would the web come from? Pores? Tiny wrist titties?) It’s not just a logical point, it’s also a narrative point that goes beyond adding tension to the plot, for identifiability is what Spidey is all about. That’s why he always fights with his mask on, because it could be anyone behind that mask. That’s why he has web-shooters, because anyone could shoot web with similar tech. The reader can picture themselves BEING Spiderman rather than watching Peter Parker or any of those guys. (Except that you’d need the spider sense to swing from it as he does, he makes it look easy but professional gymnasts would have a hard time following suit even with web-shooters). Finally the shooters allow a justification for the versatility of web he can shoot, the very way he shoots web makes more sense if it comes from something he created rather than something that’s inside him - why would he have to make the same motion, how does he control the flow, speed and quality and most of all WHY WOULD IT COME OUT FROM *THERE*?_? Also as it’s been said it shows Peter’s scientific prowess and resourcefulness, and the reason why military scientists didn’t do it sooner is because they didn’t think about it, which is something that frequently happens in all fields of science (and thankfully so when it comes to military science, we already have come up with too many ways to kill each other). As for the fact that his cartridges can’t hold much, why couldn’t they? It’s liquid, and stuff take up less space in a liquid state than in a solid state (that’s why bottles burst when you let them too long in the freezer) so the liquid state of the web is a natural compressor and when it bursts out it expands due to environmental conditions causing it to solidify in certain ways. Moreover the webbing doesn’t have to be very thick, if it is anything like actual silk it is extremely strong and it doesn’t require much for a human being to hold from it. But yeah the main reason why I like mechanical shooters (and I notice it is an unpopular opinion) is because it makes Spidey more human. Funny that most people want Peter to be more Spider than man!

I managed to circumvent the problem in a fanfic idea where my “mainline” Spidey goes with the classic mechanical shooters, but when he meets the Spider-Man of the dimension “next door”, that one has organic. I like combining the organic and mechanical. Peter can produce organic webbing, but like a real spider he can't shoot it, just trail it behind him as it comes out of an orifice near his ass. This is not that useful, so he learns to extract it from his bum and put the proto-silk fluid in cartridges. He then uses this web fluid in wrist-mounted web shooters he designed and built. This shows off his brains but explains why he doesn't make a fortune working for DuPont. It also explains why no one can track Spider-Man down by examining the webbing and looking at who buys those chemicals regularly.

I present to you the Web Filters: devices that go around Peter’s Wrists (much like regular Web Shooters) that cover the pores where his Organic Webbing comes out and inside these Wrist devices are various types of chemicals and compounds that are mixed into his Webbing as he shoots it (like for example Acid for Acid Webbing or Lead for Lead lined Webbing etc) these devices also double as iron sights to help him aim his Web lines and can even help him change the shape of his Webbing on the fly (like say change into Web Pellets or a Web Parachute etc) and do so so much more. I actually had a similar idea to your combo, but with one difference: The “Web Filters” also focus the webbing into the various consistencies seen in the comics, with the actual organic webbing only coming out as the fine mist (think the original Spider-Man Noir mini-series). This would allow for the baseline of the wrist-mounted devices to act as a focusing nozzle to help make the organic webbing useful for more than just making web nets, with the natural improvements you listed being added later as Spidey needs to make them.

Despite being Spidy fan since 70s I thought the organic made more sense. But in my day the shooters and fluid were fixed or replenished by either Reed of F4 or Nick Fury, never Iron Man. That was the days though that Spidy was a conflicted hero like Batman is. Parker was always plagued by who he could not save and those injured or killed in the carnage. There was especially a circle ⭕️ of ones he had guilt over. My Spidy days were over around the time he and Mary Jane married in late 80s until the Remei movies which I found that emotional guilt in him starting up. It could have taken off great from there. My last wish is that both DC and Marvel just stop killing the bad guys off. Spidy tried to just stop them and see them locked up - then they can come back with another plan.

Web shooters because he can tamper with them to make different types of webbing. Kind of like all the different settings in Spiderman Homecoming when Peter unlocked that ability with his suit. In the comics he’s also made certain types of web fluids to defeat certain enemies. Ice webbing was made for the human torch, acid webbing for sandman, flame webs and sonic disruption for symbiotes, taser webbing, etc. It’s honestly a lot more practical except when he runs out of fluid, but he usually keeps enough in his utility belt to get the job done.

When I saw the first Spider-Man movie using webbing produced by his own spider body I thought it was the greatest idea. It made more sense than making his own webbing. I kinda questioned Parker making his own webbing formula but it's a comic book and it's fantasy. I just enjoyed reading the stories.

What if it were a combination of both, where Peter could produce the enzymes to create organic webbing, but the Shooters went into his wrist, like dozens of tiny needles, that extracted the enzymes in order to produce and store webbing? Since the webshooters allow him to produce a tonne of different effects with his webbing.

would choose mechanical web shooters cuz I would be afraid if a shot a guy with my webs accidently in class with web shooters I can just put them in my bag or locker so I'm going with mechanical webs

That is a good point, imagine somebody grabbing your hand to show you something and you accidentally shoot their face...
