You can't talk about the history of Venom without talking about the history of Spider-Man's black symbiote suit! So let's do that, then. Today, we're talking about how a random comic book fan came up with the idea of Spider-Man's black costume which was introduced in the Secret Wars comic event, and how the fans hated it so much that the writers turned the suit into an evil alien symbiote just so Spidey would get rid of it. Also, learn about the true story of how Venom was originally supposed to be a woman!

I know we did get a female venom at some point, she was Eddie's ex-wife. They called her She-Venom, but her origin was weird. She gets shot and is fatally wounded, so while calling her from a payphone, Eddie Brock sends the Venom symbiote through the phone line and gives her to symbiote to heal her. It was weird.

Female Venom sounds like she had a better motivation to hate Spider-Man than Eddie Brock did. I guess Michelinie had to sort of half-ass Brock's origin when he realized the editors weren't going to let him use his original idea. What always annoyed me is that Venom should have equally hated Daredevil if the capturing of the real Sin Eater is what got him ostracized from journalism (Although the symbiote's own animosity towards Spider-Man might've overrode those feelings).

I talk about this show a lot online but there was a good venom story in the spectacular spider-man cartoon. They knew that eddy Brock was going to be venom and because of that they built his hatred for Peter Parker slowly over that first season. (It's a really great show in general though)

Venom could've worked as a female as well. I believe that was the sexiest mindset of the time. Don't get me wrong, I love Eddie Brock, but a female would've work too. The red and blue costume of Spiderman is always going to be classic. That being said, oh always preferred the black suit! LOL! Seriously, It was a lot slicker and it just made him look more badass!

The Female Venom would've been awesome, because the story is so horrifying. One of the great marks of a villan is how justified they are in being a villan. Spiderman "kills" her entire family and drives her insane? Perfect! Piss on that guy who thought a woman couldn't be threatening. Female Venom would've been nightmare fuel, because the reader would feel for her, while she was killing Spiderman.

I've always had an idea for a retelling of the Black Suit storyline where Peter actually develops a positive relationship with the symbiote suit. Instead of just wanting to get rid of it because he discovered it was alive, which just seemed so thoughtless and aggressive. Like, the symbiote knows how to talk in modern comics nowadays. Maybe have it have learned english and be able to communicate with Peter as he's trying to get it off in the clock tower, and they're able to come to an actual compromise. I dunno.

The symbiote does take genetic and mental influences of the host and previous hosts.

The original black costume concept idea, WAY better. The Original Girl Venom story idea, WAY BETTER. As decent as the stories turned out, they passed on some gold.

I would have loved to have a female version of venom. And as Cootst McButtgrab points out it's a solid backstory. As for Spider-Man's costume while I do love his black suit I feel the original design with the red and webbing under his arms stands out more and is just better all around.

honestly I'm a huge fan of the white suit he wore when he was part of the Fantastic Four it was freaking awesome. As for Venom personally I think I would have liked a female version sense Spider-Man's Rogues Gallery is such a sausage fest especially back then.

There was a female Venom at one point, Eddie Brocks ex wife Anne Weying, she gets shot, Eddie sends the symbiote through the phone line, literally Eddie was calling Anne from a payphone when she was at home and he sent it through from the phone to heal her gunshot wound then Anne becomes She-Venom go on a wee rampage then Eddie gets the suit back. Anne has comitted suicide from what I read trying to find more about her.

I remember when I was a kid, I didn't read comics but I loved comic book movies, cartoons, and TV shows. When the Secret Wars toyline came out I collected most of them. That was where I first learned about the black Spider-Man costume. There was a 3 or 4 comic panel on the toy's cardback that I read, it showed briefly Spidey in his ripped up red and blues and finding the symbiont and it combining with him to form the black Spider-Man costume. Even as a kid I remember thinking to myself "Uh-Oh, this is not going to turn out good". Years later when I learned about venom (I think the 90's Spider-Man cartoon) I wasn't surprised the black costume lead to him.

I just love how in the course of the symbiote being a "heartless" being to actually gaining a "personality", it becomes so symbolic in the movement for paralyzed and/or villainous people to come and redeem theirselves. Like how Agent Venom came to be and how Flash Thompson was able to settle down with the symbiote so that both can benefit without much villainy.

Female venom should show up in one of the alternate marvel universes. Maybe Spider Gwen since it has a comic already? Actually that could work in the 161 universe too, since the Venom symbiote pretty much just picks the angriest person in the room most of the time.

Catarrhini It's because the symbiote affects the host's mind, manipulating them. It was more like the symbiote wanted to take revenge for being rejected amplifying Eddie's resentment. Later on, Eddie realizes that the symbiote was controlling him and sets out on a crusade to exterminate all known symbiotes.

I can clearly remember being 14 years old in middles school (we called it junior High at the time) and hearing about the black costume issue at a comic book club I belonged to at school. I thought it was the coolest thing ever that there was a new spiderman suit and it looked so cool. Of course, I was reading all 3 Spidey comics at the time (Web, Amazing and Spectacular) so eventually bought most of the early McFarlane comics including 299 and 300 first appearances of Eddie Brock a.k.a Venom

I got to vote for the red and blue costume. It's one of the most timeless and enduring super hero designs out there. They nailed it in the 60's and there was no need for change. Also female Venom would have been great. Imagine how different things would be. I'd be totally on board if they decided to resurrect the idea for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

@Brandon Spain I guess you missed the 2018, depressing movie that contained 0/10ths of the original, brave but nerdy cosplay pioneer, about 2/10ths of it's villainous, main character and 1/10th of it's true background. Said movie also contained a surprise visit and spotlight from the very thing YOU think would have made it depressing, a Female Venom. Did you get up to pee during the scene or just forget? Did you find this travesty, NOT depressing because of your pee break or because you had no idea this was a Venom movie, in name only?

Great video! Though I find it odd Web of Spider-Man 1 was not mentioned. That is the issue where after escaping the FF's containment, the symbiote sneaks into Peter's apartment and forcefully re-bonds with him, eventually leading to him removing it at the church where it is later revealed the symbiote finds Brock.

I know this video is 2 years old, but I have a theory on how Venom will work in the MCU. Infinity War is going to be the "Secret Wars" event in the movies that brings all MCU heroes together. In it, I bet Spidey will get the black costume and face the Sinister Six in the Homecoming sequel. In the end he'll remove the black costume so the Venom spinoff can happen. But, that's just my theory.

I still believe (and always will) that Venom makes a better character as a female. There's still always time in the marvel universe to fix that one day, I'd like them to make it permanent as opposed to just dabbled in.

+Alex Maxwell I really don't see what making Venom a female adds to the character. She could have some weird dominatrix stuff going on to torment Peter? That doesn't really make any sense since Venom knowing his secret identity was enough to make him terrifying. All that making Venom a female does is add opportunities for sexual tension.

+Scroogsy It's a mix of things really. For one, I always felt that Venom's imposing brute size kind of took away from the real core aspect of the character, the psychological stalker. The female part specifically is about the psychological mind games. It's less about the tension with Peter as opposed to the tension she creates in the rest of his life. Off the top of my head, let's say a dynamic of her having become MJ"s best friend. It just affords different situations that affect people in different ways to play the stalker. Venom did just fine as he was obviously, otherwise we wouldn't love him. I just think it could be more fun a different way and symbiotes afford that possibility in spades. :D

+Metemnight I have to agree with Stefan, while it's apparently true that Venom was supposed to be a woman, he's not. I love the idea you've got but I'd rather get an all new character than have them retcon everything he was before. Unless of course it involves time travel shenanigans taking place where Venom does become a girl and successfully ruins Spiderman's life only to find that time travel was involved, causing more time travel to happen eventually ending with a lovecraftian horror fight of epic proportions that creates a living paradox symbiote human hybrid character that is her own mother and is more powerful than OG Venom because she's half symbiote, she get's sent back to before this all started becomes the woman she grows up to be who hates spiderman and causes all this leaving the other one from before to latch onto Our Venom bring her back to this universe where all her work hasn't happened and creates new plans to destroy spiderman or the venom of this universe for undoing her work, or both, probably both.

I have noticed there are others symbiotes other than venom in the marvel universe called Klyntar. And there is a Symbiote women called Scorn who for some reason has a child growing from her arm who was Carnage child. So I would think that the original idea would be interesting to bring back but much like Spider-women it should be an extra character instead of taking the place of Venom

I was actually one of the fans who was drawn into the Spider-Man books by the exciting looking new costume. While I was of course very familiar with the original look, I was 12 so I didn't have the emotional attachment to it that I guess some other people did. The black costume's groovy look and cool capabilities were really appealing too, but as soon as it started taking his body out for midnight swings I quickly realized that there had to be an explanation for the weird stuff the suit was doing, and the idea that it was alive made perfect sense. I was completely on board with the symbiote being "in love" with Peter and thought that the scene where it saves him before slinking away was actually pretty touching. The re-appearance of the symbiote as a villain kind of turned me off in and of itself, but the fact that it was paired with the visually interesting but lousy stories of the MacFarlane era had a big hand in chasing me out of comics less than a decade after I started. Obviously lots of people disagreed with me and Venom became really popular (these people were really confused when Venom's presence in the 3rd Raimi movie ruined it). As far as needing a motivation to get rid of the black costume? Wouldn't it make sense if Mary Jane objected to him wearing it because his former girlfriend the Black Cat made it? They always seem to extend any story that was good to begin with and end up ruining it. They did the same thing with the mystery surrounding the identity of the Hobgoblin. By the time they actually revealed his identity nobody cared anymore.

I would have definitely prefered the original Venom to have been a woman. That backstory for that character is far more tragic and makes the character far more interesting than Eddie Brook, who's nastiness often comes from just being fed up with life because of his bad luck and like a whiny kid just blames everything on Spiderman. At least that female Venom would have had a more legitime reason for hating Spiderman even if he never intended to hurt her. And really, that whole "he didn't think readers would see a woman as a physical treat to Spiderman"? Gosh, seriously, how mysognist can you get that your reasoning is to believe your entire audience is gonna be mysognist enough to think less of a character because of being a woman? Man, what a wasted opportunity...

Alright new Venom origin Peter and Gwen are heading to a science expo where space seems to be the case. Leading this expo is 31 year old Janine Brock a loving mother and wife. Janine had her son Eddie at 15 and her daughter Mary at 20. The expo held the recently found symbiote that Peter had gotten rid of. Janine unaware of what the symbiote is capable shows it to the public and an unknown buyer hires the Shocker to retrieve it. The Shocker disrupts the expo hurting many and his thugs come in to take hostages. In result Peter jumps to action and a fight ensues. Although Shocker was prepared he orders his thugs to kill civilians when spider man arrives and down goes Carl Brock. The next to go was Mary Brock. Spiderman manages to save Janine and Eddie, and the other civilians, but at the cost of 2 lives. Janine angered at Spiderman blames him for her husbands and daughters death. Spiderman apologizes and pursues Shocker. Shocker checking his loot realizes that the symbiote is a fake and escapes Spiderman's clutches. Janine heads back into her lab to find that the actual symbiote has escaped and it bonds with her. Turning her into Venom. She goes on a rampage and nearly kills Peter, but he manages to stop her and put her in jail. Eddie ends up in an orphanage due to his mother being in jail, but she vows escape as the symbiote was never actually separated from her.

Does Spidey start to become more and more anti hereoish or does Spidey's need for justice start to influence the symbiote to a better path? It's a shame that the writers back then didn't have the courage to stick with the story and see it through.

The symbiote never had any impact on Peter's personality. That was a terrible invention of the animated series and one that was carried over for Spider-Man 3. Marvel did a "What if...?" issue to address how things would have played out had Peter not been able to rid himself of the symbiote.
