I live in SoCal as well, I grow loads of peppers. One way I keep them away is spray water from the bottom up on plants. They go away without using pesticides, the predators eat the stragglers. You gotta do it for a whole week though at night. Also I plant marigolds in pots and wine barrels then throw wildflower seeds there to create flower pots where ladybugs and predators can hang out and use it as base camp for aphid mite feeding.

You can use the onion and garlic skins. You ferment those skins for 24 hours and then use it through spraying your plants. You can apply both on the ground and spraying on the leaves, early morning is best before the sunrise. Most pests are nocturnal and active during the night till wee hours and applying your organic repellent during early morning is more effective.

Going through your back catalog of videos in prep for this year. You know what’s weird? I got spider mites on ONE eggplant starter. I just let them have it, but I never saw them elsewhere on my patio. Maybe that’s how you do it, you sacrifice one plant to the Spider Mite God, and he allows you to keep the rest of your plants. 😏 But man, they’re voracious when they really want something.

Its my first time gardening and I decided to buy starts rather than try from seeds, spidermites took out all 4 of my cucumber plants before I got to taste it. I noticed the yellowing of the leaves and tiny black dots on the bottom, I kept pruning and the new growth was healthy until it get infected again, after few weeks I took them out and gave up. Now many of my containers have grubs and leaf miners my new archenemies.

Those flowers around you are gorgeous, Kim! I had spider mites on my tomato plant leaves. Grrrr. I used Neem Oil at night, to avoid interfering with the bees. There were also little tiny holes eaten into my tomato plant leaves. This was a heavy pest year. Every time I turned around, it was something else. Insects, Hornworms, grasshoppers, slugs, some kind of colorful caterpillars on my parsley. By mid-season I was exhausted. And of course that's when the weather is the hottest, and bug activity at its highest. I wasn't going to give up, though. So I even put some Sluggo Plus on my soil, and twice I put Seven on the plant leaves. Did what I had to do. Thanks for giving us information on spider mights, and other videos you've done on what can "bug" our gardens!

The best organic control for mites are other mites. Predator mites will go after spider mites, and also their eggs which is the true path to victory. There are also tiny species of ladybugs called _stethorus_ that are small enough to be interested in spider mite eggs, too. Also, if your compost pile gets hot (and it should when it's first breaking down) it will kill any insect eggs on the material in the compost. Basically just like pasteurization.

Hi Cali, I live in Australia in the north western border of the state of Victoria. I have noticed that the aphids have multiplied by thousands. For the first time my big pot of garlic chives I've had for over 6 or so yrs has struggled once again. It is the 3rd time I'm going to have to not just cut off and spray with pyrethrum but i think i am going to bring them back to the roots removing all soil and repot. Thinking of trying to dunk it in apple cider vinegar first. To be honest i really don't know as they are everywhere. On peoples weeds, roses, chives, heaps of stuff. I lost my garlic this yr. First time trying to grow it. Sadly %90 had to be pulled out. I don't think aphids was the primary reason but it certainly was making it more difficult. Anyway thanks for all your videos i learn so much. God bless you and all your loved ones. ❤️❤️❤️

Gray Cee. I get aphids on my cowpeas and pink eye purple hull peas. I mix up a solution of Dawn and water. Starting with a tablespoon in a gallon of water. Spray them well. Usually the exoskeleton of the aphids dry up and turn black overnight. I wish I could get a reliable spray for white flies. Spider mites and aphids stay on the plants. White flies fly away and are difficult to kill.

In late July the spider mites came to visit, and they haven't left yet. The only thing safe so far has been sweet potatoes, peanuts, horseradish, sunflowers, marigolds and peppers. I started with a sevin spray and then wash off hours later and have switched to a neem+insecticidal soap and peppermint spray. They are less prevalent but still present. It's a 2 day rotation on spraying but little by little I notice fewer eggs on leaves. I spray in the evening once temps fall below 80. (9b mojave) looking forward to the cooler day temps and if the pole beans will start to hold more blooms and set fruit.

Spider mites devastated my herb garden this year - took out an absolutely beautiful pot of oregano that I have had for several years. Also killed off my parsley, basil and my lovely lemon thyme. They also ravaged my Japanese eggplant, but it looks like that recovered and produced whole bunch of new growth and lots of new eggplants. I have been applying neem oil spray... Question is how often should I do that? Once a week does not seem to cut it.
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Green Love, oh no - so frustrating! Hopefully you're able to save your oregano! If you cut it back down to the base of the plant, most of the time it will grow back. Glad your eggplant is recovering. When you have an infestation, apply the organic pest control spray I mention in this video every 3 days until infestation is gone. You forgot to fight nature with nature. You can order ladybugs online and they do all the work!!!!!!! I have ( had?) spider mites and aphids. I created the perfect environment for them. Which also means I created the same for predators! I have to look really hard to see any pests after one week. I hurt my back and couldn’t work in my garden so all I could do was watch the wind and rain and ashes from the fires in Oregon rip plastic off the hoop house and the bugs moved right in. So did ladybugs!!!!! Yay!!!!!!!

Luckily Maryland is a very wet state. So we don’t have spidermites here. Hornworms and cabbage loopers are my biggest problem here. I also had a vine borer for the first time every this year. They are a lot bigger than I thought. Occasionally we get deer and rabbits, and slugs eating the plants but that’s pretty uncommon. And finally my last pest I’ve ever delt with is the army worm. The only thing that kills them is BT. Nothing else works on them. They will eat absolutely everything. Including the vegetables them selves. I pluck off the ones that I can and feed them to my chicken. Then spray the plants with BT.

Hello Meek - in general, try to keep your leaves dry to help control disease, but sometimes you have to pick the lesser of the 2 evils. Spider mites can be relentless, spray them off immediately so they don't take over. Just do it in the morning so the leaves dry during the day. You can see how I do this in the Organic Pest Control video, bit.ly/CaliKimOrganicPestControlVeggieGarden. Good luck getting rid of the pests and enjoy your book and seeds!

Hey Kimba, I've got 70 pods under grow lamps ready for planting weeks ago, but as we discussed, they wouldn't survive the 100+ temps. It will be in the 80's for 5 days, can I put them in the earth this week when the forecast says mid-90s next week? Thanks my friend. Tommy

yup spidermites are exploding this year due to the excessive heat here. I got lazy with the spraying during the heatwaves and they've taken over half of my tomato garden

Hi Kevin, yes, they definitely have gone crazy with the heat here in So Cal this year. Keeping up with the steps I mention in the video is key, but I totally understand the weariness in fighting the battle. Good luck with your next crop, still lots of time to plant veggies! Thanks for watching!

I have seen this video and a different one of yours. This one states to use neem, peppermint and rosemary. The other says neem, peppermint and worm tea. Which combination is most effective. I honestly can't tell you what is eating my pepper plant. Today for the first time I saw some extremely small red spots. I don't know if those are spider mites or a different insect. All I know is we used to have pin holes in the leaves. Now I am seeing half the leaf munched on and can't find a single worm or caterpillar in it. I have been checking it twice a day for about a week and still don't see anything else. We are new to gardening and I just read something that said we should be pruning it. I would say that would have helped to be able to see if something is hiding in the middle of the plant where it is pretty thick.

Oh also, if the one that you gave very specific instructions on how to make with the worm oil, if there is a big infestation, can we do it every 3 days as well? I may go with that spray if it is just as good only because you were so specific on measurements

Hi jlyoun, so glad you're gardening along with me! you can add in worm tea if you like. It has so many beneficial bacterial properties, it never hurts to add it in to your organic pest control routine. Don't be afraid to experiment until you find what works for you in your climate. Make sure to always do a test spray of a few leaves, wait 24-48 hours to see if there is any damage before you spray the whole plant. Very small spots does sound like spider mites, I'd remove pest damaged leaves, including any with holes. After pruning, give your plants a good does of organic fertilizer with high nitrogen (to help them with new growth) as I show in this video, bit.ly/CaliKim5StepsHeatWaveGardenRecovery. Thanks for watching!

Yes, you can spray worm tea every 3 days as well. It is a very mild fertilizer and will not burn your plants. As with any garden sprays, don't spray in direct sunlight - I try to spray early morning so plant has time to dry off during the day - and always do that test spray. Keep me posted!

Hi Charley, so sorry they wiped out your tomatoes! They love the heat and multiply like crazy in hot, dry conditions, sometimes even in humidity, as we've had much more humidity than normal for our area this year. Hope these steps help you stay on top of it for next time! Thanks for the visit!

1-The water pressure is too low to throw the mites off the plant. 2-Once you are trimming the leaves and moving them, eggs of mites will fall on other leaves or on the soil, so technically you are back at the start. Adn even you will trim, you need to burn those leaves. If thrown to compost bin or eco recycle bin accidentally, congrats, you just infected other people's gardens. 3-Neem oil does not work, unfortunately. Even you mix it with this and that. I love organic farming but you just can't fight spider mites with neem oil or some other mix. It is a temporary weak fix. And once it is 20+Cs and humid, you should spray once a week (10 days max), two weeks will be enough for mites to create a kingdom. Not to mention your pressure sprayer is too small for a garden like yours. Should be min 7 liters and sprayers with wands are easier to use especially when you are spraying under the leaves. -Fighting with mites might take 6 months or more, consistency is the key. -The only organic method that works is releasing predatory mites and insects (Phytoseiulus persimilis and Green Lacewings are the best for mites) -If organic method does not work, time to switch to chemicals but to choose something that the mechanical action of the product suffocates the mites with an ultra-thin film of special oil. They are usually safe for humans and safe for plants.

You and all these other ( so called ) experts. Always miss the real first step in battling any insect infestation. The first step should always be PREVENTING a infestation. I can't understand why all of you don't think of this. There are all kinds of products on the market that you can use on your plants. To prevent infestations. Another thing is I don't like to spray anything on my plants. Even water. I've been using this product for 10 years. And haven't had any infestations. Not one. One of the reasons I selected the product I use is. You can use it as a root drench. Which means you just add it to your water when you water. You don't have to spray on your plants. But you can if you want to. The other reason I selected this product is, that it's all organic. This is how I use this product. I plant a seed. Two weeks after it sprouts. Everytime I water I mix in 2 table spoons of this product. I do that for 2 weeks. Then after those 2 weeks. It's 1 table spoon one time every 2 weeks. Bam, it's that easy. No more headaches. No more worries. Back to enjoying gardening again. Do some research people. Theres a few good products on the market that do this. And get back to enjoying gardening again.
