In this video I will propagate spider plant babies in water and soil, and I'll compare the results from these two popular plant propagation methods. I took 6 spider plantlets from the same mother plant and put three spider plant babies in water to root, and three directly in soil. After about 4 weeks, I moved the spider plantlets in water to soil. The video ends by comparing the foliage and root growth of water vs soil propagation after 2 months. Aside from finding the best way to propagate spider plants, you can also find some tips on propagating spider plants and taking care of the spider plant babies in this video. Hope you enjoy this plant experiment!

To keep cuttings from falling into the water, cover the glass with foil and poke the roots through the foil

I use the foam noodles bought from dollar tree for $1.25. Cut about 1” long and put the plants in the hole that already has if the hole too big you have to cut on the side then squeeze to fit for the plants. Use plastic cup just the same size. The roots will stay in the water only

I just found your channel and I am so thankful! I love your content. I have been on a journey of propagating and similarly found that in almost every case with the succulents clippings I used, the water worked out best. It’s funny because I just started propagating my spider plant and ivy among others so it’s awesome to see your success and your tips. Thanks again!

To prevent the cutting leaves sinking into the water, you can place a piece of cardboard onto the glass jar with holes for the stem cuttings. It's easy then to lift cardboard when you need to add more water :)

I put my babies in a glass jar with about 1 inch of clay pellets. The clay pellets float in the water and don't sink. The babies don't sink down in water but pellets keep them wet. It works very well.

Awesome thank you! What do you do with the runner on the mother plant? Do you just leave it 'empty', or cut it right off? I accidentally cut mine off and now I'm worried I won't get any more pups :(
@BudgetBotany
@BudgetBotany 2 жыл бұрын
No problem! I leave the runners there because I don't mind how they look. If you accidentally cut one off, don't worry the mother plant should grow more :)
@cynthiacollett6233
@cynthiacollett6233 Жыл бұрын
Cut it off..it will turn brown anyway, and the mother plant will send out new growth. Often times where you cut it off, the mother plant will double the shoots she sends out.

you get a mason jar, with a lid. Take the lid off hot glue string and all types of direction on the top of the lid. Then you fill it up with water screw on the lid and solution easily solved. I have over 200 plants in that propagation method , works great. once a week don’t even have to upset the plants empty the water and screw back on,

As you unpoted the plants in soil you made the results void unfortunately as part of the point of soil propagation is the lack of root disturbance .

I have 15 - 1 footers I go from water to soil and then hit em with a feeding and hydrogen peroxide diluted in water once a month. With 4 months they produce new chutes with babies. Unfortunately I trim them off to keep the plant from getting to lanky. When they are fuller Ill let the chutes grow out.

Can plantletts remain attached to the mother, untill roots are well established?
@BudgetBotany
@BudgetBotany Жыл бұрын
I know they can remain attached for long time since some people never take them off the mother plant. In my experience though, the roots on the plantlets don't grow to be well established while still attached to the mother plant.
@allenpost3616
@allenpost3616 Жыл бұрын
Yes they can, as that is how they spread in the wild growing along the ground. You would have to have the pot next to the mother plant and use a reformed paperclip to secure the pup to the surface of the potting mix. It would probably become rooted faster still attached to the parent plant as it would continue receiving nutrients throughout the rooting process.

To avoid the plant cuttings submerging in the container of water, just don’t fill the container so deep…..

Sure but unless you find a container of the right size, your plantlet will sit in the bottom of a jar and still fall over

It seem that it's a coin-toss. Better root growth with soil propagated (since they have been in soil longer), with a slightly better leaf growth on the water propagated. I call it a draw. I'm simply waiting for my "pups" to form a node. A good comparison & and a nice review. Thank you.
