‘Spider Robots’ Hope to Clean Japan’s Sewers

Spider-like robots could begin inspecting Japan’s sewer pipes in the not-too-distant future. Japanese robotics startup Tmsuk announced last month that it has developed the SPD1 robot, made to carry out inspections of Japan’s aging sewage system as the industry grapples with a labor shortage. CEO Yuji Kawakubo says that a severe labor shortage has made it difficult to inspect and maintain the system. Inside Edition Digital’s Stephanie Officer has more.

It’s not automated, it will be controlled by a person and the video will be played back for the operator to inspect. This job exists all over the United States and Europe and has for decades. Look up the company Cues. They run a monopoly on sewer inspection robots in the US.

That's happening in the US too. It's cause the baby boomer generation is about to all pass and when it happens the Millennials and Gen Z who aren't having as many kids will slowly decrease too. The entire world population is decreasing and I don't see it as a problem but a fix to our pollution issue. Less people to affect the world means the planet can repair itself and fix the ozone that was destroyed. Animals can repopulate and nature can re-grow overtime (trees, plants, etc)

So gimmicky. The company made a robot to inspect a sewer system.. the thing has way too many moving parts, too many things to get stuck in its little gears, and it does it very inefficiently because of the rate of travel. What a waste of time/money/effort.

Seems highly inefficient. Give it some wheels and let it ride the walls, switching to legs when it needs to go through junctions. Better yet, install a cable rail at the top of the sewer system and let a much cheaper camera travel through the system like a gondola 🚠
