At first I felt I didn’t like the film because I didn’t like how it made me feel. But it was the subtle power of the film. It makes me nauseous. I love it.

Exactly! I felt conflicted to admit that I love the film because it didn't bring any "visible" emotions out of me - laughter, crying, amazement - but the inner turmoil was ravishing. It's so unsettling yet so calm and mesmerizing at the same time. It's got a whole lot in common with Vertigo, and dare I say this is a whole sub-genre of movies in its own right

At the surface level, it's a romance. But in the hands of a nuanced director, and possibly the greatest actor in history, turns what should be a bore of typical period piece between lovers, into something completely more riveting and deep.

I think there is one detail that you didn’t mention: before Reynolds finds Alma and grabs her by the wrist to leave there had also been a bit of a stir in the crowd and Alma had left it. She didn’t seem to feel completely happy in the crowd, somehow a little displaced even though she had wanted to be there. Also her dress doesn’t seem to fit the occasion. Maybe she also must realize she doesn’t belong in that world anymore either.

Beautiful breakdown of the scene. There is one detail that I’m not sure signifies something for the director, but Alma in Portuguese means Soul, so I’ve also seen the relationship in that perspective as if he is fighting against and towards finding is true soul. A bit like Jung’s red book were he goes into his mind’s landscapes to talk to his own soul.

this is my favourite movie of all time. rewatching the new years scene, im drawn to the background partygoers-the couple on the balcony especially. their costumes are sexually ambiguous and point towards the complex power dynamic between reynolds and alma. also, by wearing the purple dress (the first one he made for her) to the party, she treats it like a costume, which it kind of is-it represents alma as she is with reynolds/as she is becoming. but of course that treatment of the dress is awful for reynolds to see. interesting that two of his dresses are costume-like (the velvet queen ones).

At first when watching it I was like "why is Alma with this guy? He is rude and mean and doesn't love her." but as I kept on watching, as I rewatched and obsessed, I got it. They are both twisted, they are both hard and unmoving characters. Alma will not yield to his tantrums, and in exchange Reynolds gives her something better than love, he lets her know he needs her, he is helpless without her. And as a woman, it is so attractive when a man just needs you, I think because of notions that men are hard and self sufficient and need no one or nothing, but I got it then, he was vulnerable with her and only her. That's love in a way.

Well this psycho may have imagined Reynolds 4:42 that way but it was not how day Lewis played it. He came across as an immensely gifted and confident man capable of immense live and devotion creating an idyl supporting a great many people not indulging in lack of control of temperament. Anderson is insane ruined the film with the over the top metaphors with the toilet and analyzing his devotion to a loving mother who mentored him as some form of neurosis. Film died at the box office audience I was in was massively turned off and it was made known.
