For the fountain pen-keeping the angle of the nib as VERTICAL as possible may help minimize splatter/spill incidents. The nib can best distribute a steady flow of ink when held UPRIGHT; when held diagonally or horizontally, you’re prone to more random ink-blob jumpscares (insert horror-movie-worthy artist shrieks here) Also I’m super excited about this inktober series! Keep up the wonderful work-and may your fountain pens leave you blob-free!

Hi, just a fellow ink drop here. Is there a specific way to hold the pen that most fountain pen users utilize to keep it as vertical as possible? I try to hold it upright but I find that it affects my drawing. Maybe I just need practice, but is there a specific technique I could look up?

Yo! Im a sequential art major at an art school, and for a week or two our professor taught us how to use those dip pen nibs! Some general tips i learned is to keep the point side down, so as you apply plessure the prongs split more and you get a thicker line. This is how a lot of mangakas do shading and line weight so fast. Emily seems to already have a good understanding that your ALWAYS pulling towards yourself to draw your lines, instead of oushing or going side to side. It feels wierd and scary at first, but once you get used to it its super fun!!

Fav pen tip I learned was to clean ya nib while what you've lined dries. It helps keep them in good condition and also it doesn't clog as often (use something that doesn't have fibers) Also practicing some lines to begin with!!! It helps find the right pressure
@andrickdominguez92813 ай бұрын
When it comes to working with ink, using ink straight from the bottle can sometimes be a little thick for pen nibs and especially brushes. Having a separate little container or bottle and watering it down just a bit with water can help with ink flow and making brushes not get gunky. Also it’s good to have a just a separate piece of paper to practice line strokes with the pen nibs or brushes.

I love using dip pens and various nibs. Dab off excess ink that might be on the back of the nib, experiment with different pressures and angles, and most importantly of all, wash your nibs very thoroughly between projects. If ink dries in the nib crack, it ruins it and will ruin your artworks. You can soak them in alcohol if this happens, but it doesn't always get it all out. (Depends on the ink you're using, too.) Its looking great though!

As a artist who uses a calligraphy pen, the tip is not to fill the pen to much. And you have to make sure you clean them after use THEY WILL RUST! And don’t hold it like a pencil, it can make you want to push down which gives you bigger lines. Gently rest the pen between your thumb and pointer finger, hold it firm but don’t press down, glide it on the paper. Hope that helps anyone wanting to try it.

My main tool is the G-Pen. Getting rid of the storage oil is important. Either get some soap and clean it off, or if you have a lighter handy, simply heat the nib. Like two seconds if that is enough to get rid of the oil, and gives the ink a surface to cling to. The G-Pen is really flexible, for better or worse. Being light-handed will tamp down on unwanted bold lines and it's easier on the nib. Some psychos will use very fine sandpaper or an emery board to get the tip to the right level of wear, but you might introduce some grit into the ink. India ink is cheap, but it's also unforgiving and very runny compared to Sumi-e ink.

Current art student! I’ve used ink+fountain pen before for a drawing class, and I still don’t know too much about it, but I think diluting your ink in some water to create washes would be cool to add to these pieces (although I recommend doing the washes first and letting it dry before doing the lineart of your work, cause in my experience the water tends to make the lines bleed). Also just keep in mind how much ink you’re putting onto the tip each time, cause too much can cause it to drip and leave big splotches (speaking from experience lol). But you seem to know a lot about it already so I don’t feel like there’s much to say, beautiful artwork as always!! :)

Something that helps when using traditional ink pens...do NOT dip the most of the nib into your ink, at most about an eighth to a quarter depending on how thick you want your line (thinner line = less dip) 1. this avoids mess which you had several times Emily 2. this avoids wasting ink 3. this prevents ink from caking on your nib making it harder to use and eventually unusable due to eventual damage from all the ink buildup 4. You have better control of your lines drawn Some other things that help would be to remember that stuff you learned from when you tried calligraphy that all translates into using one for art pieces and is HOW mangaka and others do things quickly. Watching how much you dipped your nibs made me want to cry since that's just asking for ink to cake and lead to the nib breaking thus becoming unusable even when you clean it you're still going to get caking. Also don't press too hard into your paper it actually keeps the ink from flowing and you could see at least during your ocean drawing you were doing it, darker and thicker lines you pull slower, never harder this also ruins your nibs.

I think a tip for future experiments with the dip pen is to have a cup of water next to you guys to rinse off the nib every once in a while. India/comic/sumi ink tends to be thick and waterproof (for the most part) so it dries fast and will dry onto your nib into a hard layer that will clog your nib - which is probably what Emily experienced when the pen stopped working or wasn't responding well to her motions. It also looks like there was already dried ink on the nibs before you guys started so that probably affected the dip pen's nibs performance a bit lol Make sure to also dry off the nib after rinsing to not contaminate the ink too much in the rare case the ink itself will develop mold and also at the end of your drawing sessions so your nibs don't rust before you get enough mileage out of them. If It helps, you guys could also have separate container/bottle to hold a portion of ink to avoid cross contamination and a paint dish to dilute if you guys want a variation of grey tones for shading etc instead of solid black shadows or relying on cross hatching/hatching. You can use the ink/diluted ink like you would paint, but again, remember to clean your tools to avoid the ink hardening onto your tools and making cleanup harder later. There are also specific nib cleaning solutions that dissolve the ink that really got gunked onto the nib but do read the warning labels on those cleaners too because most of those nib cleaners have ammonia in them. There's also a tip from people who use dip pens a lot to wipe off the nibs of dip pens with rubbing alcohol before leaving it to dry after washing to help speed up the drying process or something like that before storing them away. Also, try not to get water or ink inside that little silicone gasket holding the nib inside the pen too to avoid mold inside the gasket or rusting of the nib itself. Overall, as long as you guys remember to rinse/wash off the nib and dry them completely, everything should be relatively smooth sailing. But yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing how the rest of this spilled inktober goes and drawing along with you both lol

A lot of things happened in my life over the last decade and a bit, and I had not been drawing like almost at all, compared to when I was younger. Recently I've been, slowly trudging along and sort of getting back into the swing of things. Helped a fair bit by the support of the love of my life. This year is my first ever Inktober that I'm not just jokingly attempting. Of course, I'm keeping to mostly practice, more sketchy drawings, trying not to spend more than an hour or so on it, so I don't just burn out by the end of the month. I've been using your prompts, and I haven't missed out a day so far. Though, funnily, I did end up drawing both day 1 and 2 on the same day. Since I woke up and decided myself to attempt it only on the 2nd. I'm not too bothered with if I'll make it to the full on end, because all in all. It's still so far the longest continuous bout of daily practice I've had in quite a very, very long time. Emily, take a minute or two, add a couple of pebbles and texture to that path on the curiosity picture. With a bit of tweaking, you'll be able to turn that spilled drop into a feature, that should help you to love the piece a little more despite some of its flaws! Don't beat yourself too hard over 15 minutes drawings! Thanks you two for being your fun and inspiring selves!
@michellecruz84293 ай бұрын
I remember doing a "half-marathon" Inktober once; for me, it was less about following the prompts and more challenging myself to draw and post frequently. I gave myself a few days head start since school would cut into my drawing time. Some drawings I wish I had more time on, and others I wish I didn't do at all, but by the last, 15th drawing I felt pretty proud of how much I got done.

Tips with pen nibs: 1) Rinse them with hot water (using electric kettle) to remove protective lacquer before use. (Do not use a lighter, a match, a potato or chemicals to remove it., even if the internet tells you to…) 😂 2) Drawing sideways (left to right) makes a thin, uniform line. To make a thick-to-thin or thin-to-thick line, pull the nib towards you. Rotate the drawing to keep your hand ergonomically positioned.😊 3) Don’t force the nib. Each pen has a different amount of flexibility (line variation) that they are designed to produce. If you try to force the nib to make thicker lines than it’s designed for, you risk damaging it. If you used a lighter to remove the coating, you irreversibly changed the flexibility, likely reducing it. (That’s why I strongly advise against using a lighter…) 😫 Also, if you press too much you will bend the tines. (That’s why I wouldn’t recommend sticking your pen to a potato or anything like that… 🥔 ) 4) Wash the nib often. The ink dries fast, and will prevent new ink from flowing. Have a jar of water and a cloth at hand while inking. Always wash the nib after use. Art stores do sell a pen cleaning solution to remove dried ink, but your mileage may vary… 😅 🧼 5) Faster strokes = steadier lines (usually). The faster you move the pen, the less wobbly the line turns out. 6) Watch a lot of videos of cartoonists and mangakas inking to get an idea of their individual technique. 😊😊😊 7) Dip pens usually require thicker paper to work. 150-250 gsm ideally. Smooth surface = less texture on lines. 📄 8) The ink dries slower than with fineliners or brush! Be mindful where your hand is! Have some correction fluid, white opaque ink or qouache at hand. I think I’ve yet to see an original page, where no corrections were needed. (So don’t worry!) 😅😊 Have fun with these things y’all ! 😊

Is love using ink for when I draw. The tips that I suggest are that if you want to make an area darker, you can do crosshatching. That is basically making a lot of Lines and crossing them out and a checkered like pattern. Another tip is to add a bit of water to ink but not too much obvious.That way , it's a bit lighter , but not too.

I have a fear of dying too. People say its natural and all that but the thought that i cant do anything and having no consciousness forever makes my stomach drop. Sometimes I cry about it.

That’s v normal. I don’t fear it cuz I believe in reincarnation, & being born again in the future sounds dope lol, but if we were acc just in the void, that’d suck. Who knows tho 🤷♀️

I feel the same thing about death except regarding my family and loved ones. The idea of I myself dying doesn't phase me as much.

For me I feel like living is so much scarier than dying and I gotta do that shit every day, dying seems kinda chill honestly

@@deathnstuff It's kinda funny, because in middle school I had such a horrific fear of dying I literally convinced myself to believe in reincarnation so that I'd be able to sleep at night. And honestly it worked pretty well, now I sort of believe there's some truth to every afterlife

@blackberrybriars LOL real. It’s funny how ppl stumble into ideas like that. For me, also in middle, I figured the “conservation of energy” would just apply to our souls (if we have ig) lol

The way you hold the pen affects the difficulty, with fountain pens it's generally considered that holding it at an acute angle ( 45 degrees ) is the best way, but you can experiment if you want and find your own sweet spot for how you hold it. The 45 degree angle is mostly for if the pen has a cartridge for the ink rather than using an external inkwell, I think.

When it comes to using dip pens, I've personally found glass pens to be the easiest! A calligraphy nib only allows for strokes in a specific direction. With glass pens the nib is round and can work like any pen! Theyre also very pretty

Ngl doing the art 1 week at a time sounds so much more productive than each day, probably a great way of keeping up with it for us busier artists.
