So the way the Mutagen works in this version is you get mutated with the DNA of the last thing you touched/interacted with, or whatever DNA is mixed into the Mutagen itself. Hamato Yoshi/Master Splinter was in a sewer when he was mutated, therefore he has rat DNA. The turtles were mutated with Splinter so they got human DNA. Edit: ok damn it somebody in their chat beat me to the punch. I mean good on that guy.

To be fair many versions do work on that logic with the mutagen. 2003? The turtles were owned by a human. Splinter was owned by himoto Yoshi in that version. 1980s im not sure. It could still apply since Splinter used to be human in that version too. And i don't know how bebop and rocksteady were mutated.

A detail I really loved about the mutations in this show, is that the characters mutate into whaterver organism they last touched, just like in the original show. BUT this show never actually verbally explains this. It is an entirely visual detail that is shown right before every single mutation and I love everything about that. The show is basically saying: "Yeah, this is how it works. Deal with it." Without ever actually saying it

TMNT 2012 will forever be the superior TMNT series in my eyes. They nailed the perfect balance of comedy and action, making the series tons of fun to rewatch cuz it's both humorous and emotionally gripping. And dw, the graphics get better by S2, and by S5 you can see how much budget went into making the show :] Also, I learned to accept April's existence after 4 rewatches.

The Turtles hide from the human world because they are mutants, they are different, humans will judge them based on the fact they are turtles aka, their appearance. My personal favorite definitely has to be 2012. It was the first one I really got into. 2003 hasn't stuck with me as much for some reason, but maybe I just need to give it another go. It's also the only animated TMNT show so far that hasn't had Rob Paulsen voicing a character. I swear that man is in everything... My earliest experience with the TMNT fandom - you’re always gonna piss somebody off and when you value 2012 more than 2003 and vice versa, so I would just like to say that I adore them both equally. They are both dark, funny, and incredibly action-packed iterations with the turtles, Splinter, and Shredder maintaining the cool factor we expect from them in both action and story. I still like the 2012 April and Casey, more so for their development into the team and not because of the love triangle stuff with Donnie (Mae Whitman and Josh Peck are always a treat to hear from). Season 1’s fight scenes are a bit choppy but get so much better later on. Next to Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness and The Legend of Korra (yes, I like the show despite it’s problems), 2012 TMNT was my Nickelodeon show during the 2010s.

Eh, it was only really S1 that had crappy CGI. It significantly improved in S2, and S5 was pretty darn close to movie levels of CGI.

They're both voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson, who has done a crapload of different characters, including Jabba the Hut (Star Wars: The Clone Wars), Sheriff Blubs (Gravity Falls), and even Kamek in The Super Mario Bros.
