Spin Recovery In Cessna 172

Spins! In the US it's not part of training until you are preparing for becoming a CFI but I urge everyone to get with an instructor to practice spin recoveries. Given that Conrad is working towards his CFI it was time to knock out his spin training endorsement. Disclaimer: This video is edited for time and entertainment purposes. Procedures, explanations and flight phases have been edited out which can remove context. All precautions were taken to make this as safe as possible.

Spins / spin recovery was part of PPL training and testing when I got my license in Canada 25+ years ago - In the last few months I've practiced spins multiple times... Kinda strange when I see U.S. based private pilots who haven't done spin recovery and think that it's a scary scenario. Glad to see you guys practicing recovery and demystifying it for those who are afraid of spins. In the end many 172s won't spin at all or will recover on their own (if you have enough altitude.)

CONRAD CFI2B has a great attitude and will do very well keeping flight instruction fun and educational. There is not a better combination in the world for this journey in aviation. As an instructor for 15 years and a pilot for 37, my fondest memories and current experiences are with my instructor. Yes, all instructors have instructors that have and will mentor us for life. Great job, Lew as you have also had an influence on me as well. Good luck and I will be following your stratospheric career as you ascend to the heights of aviation.

3 things: 1) Utility category 2) My favorite answer to, how do you recover a spin: PRAY Power idle Rudder opposite Ailerons neutral Yoke forward 3) He doesn't look like Conrad. Young Bob fits better IMHO.

Conrad so sad to see you go. Ironically that’s how I left it with my instructor as well while getting my PPL and in a 172. I did 2 unintentional full spins after a month of no flying. Literally froze and grabbed both sides of the airplane both times. Funny because I had PARE down pat but in a spin your brain is not interested in figuring out what that acronym stands for. I liked what Conrad said: FIRST, power to idle. That’s what helped me out from getting frozen since you actually feel the recovery happening and the plane stops rotating. Then the rest of PARE comes back to you since the plane is under control at that point. I was happy that my last flight was demonstrating how to get out of an unintended spin with the same instructor before he left for the airlines.

Did my spin training yesterday, I fly the 172 but me and my instructor could not get her into Utility, so we did it in the Tomahawk, scariest shit I've ever done, but after the 2nd spin I found them pretty fun, I recovered the 3rd and 4th pretty quickly, your videos doing spins got me ready for it!

My instructor and I took out everything possible to put a 172 into utility category. He only weighed like 170 and I was 250 something. We were over by 5 lbs. I said, look it's a sign for me to lose a little more weight even though we'd technically be "fine" for spin training. I watched my diet and exercised like CRAZY for a week. Came back and we were 3 lbs under. That's my spin training story.
