I attained private, commercial, instrument and multi and ATP (never a CFI). I don’t recall ever doing a spin in training (maybe once 53 years ago). In 28,000 hours, I’ve avoided getting into a spin🤞🤪. Have done upset training many times, in airliner sims. That was fun ! Now I have a 1947 v tail bonanza, and I don’t ever get close to a stall, so I avoid spinning altogether!👍🏻🤞

As a CFI I felt the skidded turn stall, one that could be encountered on a base leg to final turn was most important. The pilot flys through the final approach path and responds through excessive application of bottom rudder to bring the aircraft onto alignment with the final approach path. Instead of entering the spin through the bottom of the turn a skidded turn can result in the airplane going "over the top" and entering the spin to the opposite side ie. entering a spin in the opposite direction. It is my opinion that a skidded turn stall/spin entered low to the ground is the most dangerous type of spin that can be encountered.

I guess I missed the most important part of spin training in the video, which is what to do in the aircraft before you set up for the spin. I was instructed to commit the HALT procedure to memory, which properly sets you up for the maneuver. H: harnesses and hatches. A: altitude (3000 agl). L: lose objects inside the cabin secured. T: terrain and traffic, fly a figure 8 at your entry altitude to make sure there is no traffic in the working area, and make sure you are not over a populated area and have suitable terrain below you in case you need to make a forced landing.
@mohlenair Жыл бұрын

@@mohlenair Thanks for the thumbs up and comment. I loved spin training and it was also mandatory in Canada. I think it was either the 5th or 6th lesson in the itinerary. Be worth getting the seats checked. Keep up the good work.

I inadvertently spun a C-152 during power-on stall practice. Fortunately my instructor was there, because I panicked. I did NOT recognize what had happened. He calmly explained what was going on and how to recover. At this point in time, actual spin training was not in the syllabus. They TOLD us about it the first week of ground school, but all that information got overshadowed by everything else that I had to learn. Later, while practicing power on stalls solo, I accidentally spun the aircraft again. This time, I knew what to do, and I felt like I had all day to get over it. Had I not had that happen to me earlier, I think I would’ve died. I wholeheartedly urge flight schools to go out and do actual spins so that the student can recognize them and know what to do. Talking about it in a classroom does not cut it.

EVERY PILOT should be tought spins. EVERY PILOT EVERY TIME.
Many years ago the FAA eliminated spin training from the private pilot checkout. More pilots were being killed by doing the training than in actual flights. Having said that I went and did spin training in a Decathalon many years ago. The first few were disorienting, after 10 or so I could do a 3+ rotation spin and recover on a predetermined heading. After 60 or so spins they were no big deal. Probably need to go out and experience it again. Aerobatic training is great but do not go out with someone who is not completely competent, and also go in an airplane that is set up for it. Wear a parachute as problems can occur. Back in the day parachutes were required for the spins, loops. rolls etc that we did.
@chucklemasters64335 ай бұрын
i prefer a more realistic spin entry as it would be in real life with a bunch of cross control to initiate the spin. so nose high with power and a bunch of right aileron to keep the nose from going left instead of left rudder. this is how actual real life spins happen most of the time when low time pilots do slow flight with not enough right rudder to keep the wings level and use all right aileron instead. also i know of pilots who died doing spins because the person who taught them did not show them what happens after the third turn. This is so important because if you only do 1 or 2 turn spins the airplane will recover by itself if you just let go of the controls . they will think the airplane always recovers like this if you do at least a 3 turn spin and show them how different the recovery is after number 3 it enters what is called a steady state spin where it won't stop spinning when you release the sontrols. you must push forward with no hesitation with considerable force to get both wings flying again. someone could easily be killed ifthey have never been shown how important this is to know.

@@mohlenair Thank you. I'm looking to get a 160 and add all of the Knots 2 U mods as well as the header pipe that adds 14 HP. It should petty much equate to a 180 except for the fuel burn. 180 at 12 GPH and the 160 @ I think 8 or 9 GPH. the mods are a-bit expensive but over time so is fuel and the mods definitely make the aircraft more airworthy and safer too boot. Wing tip extension with Horner tips, seals for all control surfaces, wheel pant additions, wing to fuselage faring's and a couple of other detailed drag reduction items. Can't remember the company name for the header pipe but 14 HP brings a 160 to 174 We'll see but it's worth considering if your thinking about a 140 Thanks for the Awesome reply! Robert

Sorry that is completely the WRONG way to teach/demonstrate a spin entry for purposes of spin recognition and avoidance (and subsequent recovery of course). Spin entry method used in training should always be off a slow over-ruddered (ie stalled skidding) gliding turn: THE WAY IT HAPPENS IN REAL LIFE!! As the Tiger Moth instructors used to drum into their students " don't stall and skid in a gliding turn, or for sure you'll crash and burn". This can also be turned into a good entry into a spiral dive by simply relaxing the back pressure on the elevator a little as the incipient spin transitions to the full spin, thereby providing a good demonstration of the differentiation of a spin from a spiral dive....critical of course for the recovery method to be applied.
