My 15 year old daughter went through spinal fusion. She was 13 when she had it done. She thinks that it is the best distention she ever made. She had scoliosis with two curves. The pain that she feels now is nothing like the pain she felt then. She was in a brace for four years before the surgery. The brace was hell for her. She was sweating nonstop, it was not helping as well. After the surgery she can do what ever she wants and she is very happy.

Man you just gave me so much hope. I just turned 30 and I have been battling back pain for the last 4 years. I am a police officer and have been wearing the damn gun belt, and getting into chases, fights accidents ext. The lifestyle has taken its toll on my l4-l5 discs which have become degenerative. The pain i get at times is 7-8 and i literally just snap and say fuck everything. However having that warrior mindset and being God fearing I snap back and start trying to build myself back up. This video has literally given me a lot of piece knowing that there are positive outcomes with fusions and a high percentage of the outcome is up to the patient. So I thank you brother for this message. My docs believe that currently my muscles are strong enough to manage so they are having me take steroid medication, pt and injections. Depending on how I respond and my mri they believe I will be ok for several years but eventually will need to talk future about a possible fusion or new less invasive surgical procedure. Non the less please pray for my journey and I hope and pray all will continue to go in your favor.

Listening to your story gives me hope. Thank you for sharing! I'm at the three month mark after an L4-S1 fusion. I had spondylolisthesis, grade 3 and a year and 3 months ago I was in the worse, non-relenting, pain of my life. I couldn't walk. I couldn't do anything. My son came home from college for Christmas and I felt so bad that the whole time, I was miserable, in bed, and couldn't do anything with my family. But, as much as I felt like a burden, I'm so glad I had them to support me! I felt non stop pain, all day and night. I couldn't sleep with any medication. I wanted to die. I hate that my mind went there, but it was like I was in a nightmare that I couldn't wake up from. My family, there, by my side, got me through it! It took me a year to finally get my surgery, but afterward, I only have mild neuropathy and a slight foot drop. Overall, it was a success! I've been taking it easy and making sure I don't do any BLT. I haven't been able to see a physical therapist yet. They were all scheduled out three months or more. I have my first appointment at the beginning of April. I just had my 3 month appointment with my surgeon and everything looks good! I am in that slump though that you were talking about at your 4 month mark. As good as I am right now, I was hoping I'd feel better. My surgeon said that it takes a while for the neuropathy and foot drop to go away. He said the further and more severe it is down the leg, the longer it takes to heal because the nerves have been impinged for a while. He also said that whatever is left after a year will most likely be permanent, so I hope I continue to improve during this time. I feel my foot drop has gotten slightly better since my surgery. I was wiggle my large toe with less resistance that a couple months ago! One of my fears is that they said there is a 15% chance that within 15 year, my fusion could cause spondylolisthesis in my L3 which would mean I'd have to get another fusion. Currently, my surgeon says my L3 and above are in great shape and he thinks I'll be in the 85% so long as I don't start doing any major lifting. At any rate, I am thankful that I am much better off than I was. I know just how bad it could be, as I'm sure you do too. Nerve pain is like nothing else! No amount of opioids subsides it!

Will, I 100% believe that the people who have had a spinal fusion and are still in a lot of pain, haven’t done the hydrotherapy and physical therapy that we both have done after the surgery. Now I had my spinal fusion 25 years ago and it is the strongest part of my back. My fusion was L4 to S1. There is also no arthritis and still looks clean. One of the things that doctors do fail to mention, however, is that there is a fair chance that after a certain amount of time, the disc above the fusion is prone to either herniation or slippage. This is where I am at right now. I’m due for an MRI with contrast to see how bad it is. I will also be seeing a neurosurgeon next week to see what he recommends. I’m in a lot of pain and it has greatly affected my life and I’m taking pain meds and lyrica for nerve pain. I’m praying they won’t have to do another fusion. Then I will be having 4 vertebrae fused. If so, I will seek another opinion. Always, always get a second opinion. Shots never help me and physical therapy is not helping at all. The only thing that has helped was going to Florida two weeks ago. I currently reside in New York. Any temperature lower than 65 keeps me in bed because of the pain. My pain management doctor thinks it would be a good thing to reside in Florida 6 months out of the year. But that’s not going to “fix” the problem. There is always hope. That’s what everyone needs to know. Don’t be stuck on what one doctor says. Not every doctor knows everything. I should know.

Had a microdicectomy 3 months ago and was still having bad nerve pain. Told the doc and his response was it was just nerve damage and would take time to heal. Finaly due to all of my emails back and forth about the constant nerve pain they sent me back in for another MRI. They than seen that my L4-L5 was in a million pieces. So now a fusion procedure is lined up for the near future. I'm 38 and extremely up in the air on if this will work. I have been in pain for years and am exhausted. I thank you for your video as it and you are an inspiration.

Thanks Big Poppa Port for your u-tube messages....it is comforting to find people to relate to as I struggle with this long road ahead, being 10 days post op, anterior S1L5 fusion. I feel very fortunate to be in better shape today than some of your visitors have been at this point, and pray it continues this way. I'm hoping I'm one of the Poster Children of a successful surgery and fusion., and it encourages others to move ahead with theirs. Because I feel good, I am off (hopefully) pain meds and muscle relaxers as of today, I am way too anxious to return to normal activity. It's hard to imagine I will have to resist bending/twisting/lifting for months ahead with all that is on my to-do list. The nerve pain some of you are experiencing was for me 8 years ago when my disc ruptured and damaged my nerve permanently (I waited too long for my first back surgery as the disc wrapped itself around my nerve - a discectomy/laminectomy). Since then I've had numbness/tingling/pain in my left foot/ankle, which I pretty much ignore and just get on with life (wearing fewer sexy shoes). My leg/foot swelling from surgery just subsided, I have some nerve damage amplification , but no current sciatic pain. I'm just achy and have some abdominal pain/cramping and swelling, not so different than menstrual cramps. Having had natural childbirth, and many kidney stones (way worse than natural childbirth) ....this is not too bad.... so far anyway! At this point, my biggest challenge is practical and psychological I'd say - allowing it to fuse and heal properly without messing it up by doing too much, too early. I'm used to being active, taking care of myself and others, and am a self employed single mom who must keep working. Although my 20 year old daughter attends college from home, I have little help and support, and because I look and feel pretty good, I may not appear to need it. Getting the support and help I need so that I heal is HARD. For me at this point, I'm challenged with patience and support, resisting bending/twisting/lifting, needing help, feeling dependent, feeling useless/helpless and anxious....I am practicing patience very hard every day and hoping my family and friends can stick through this with me. Can't wait to drive (and work) next week, PT after 6-8 weeks, fused at 3 months, and healed at 6 months!

Stumbled upon your video while researching spinal fusion surgery online. I am a 71 year old retired Air Force. 22 yrs 2 mos 18 days it says on my DD214. Retired in '93. Scheduled for surgery in three weeks. Have had lower back pain since falling on ice in Alaska in 1982 and have lived with it ever since. Last year began having severe nerve pain in both legs, knees, hips and butt. MRI shows L4 and L5 are out of alignment and disc is bulging. Also have arthritic growth on both and on L3. Planned surgery is supposed to address all these issues. Have a new grandson who will be 18 month old tomorrow. Between Covid 19 restrictions and back pain have not been able cultivate the kind of relationship with him that I want. I look forward to six months after surgery when I can pick him up and hug him like a Grandpa should. Thanks for your video and your positive words. I have subscribed to your channel and will review a few more before surgery. I'll let you know how it goes. P.S. The VA hasn't been much help in this.

Thank for the encouragement to put the work in. I was motivated and self-disciplined the first time around.I was stronger and more flexible than ever. I got up before the sun, did God knows how many crunches, and other types of core, as well as stretching. Then I walked a minimum of three miles, which grew into winning marathons, Aerobics, weight lifting, swimming, riding, skiing, etc. I was healthier in my thirties, forties, and fifties than I ever dreamed of being. Just today, however, after learning and accepting the fact that I am going to have another and more extensive fusion, I spent the day crying, and feeling anxiety about what i wouldn't be able to do with three levels being fused. I teach dance, yoga and ride horseback for a living. So flexibility is the greater part of my activities. My mind was set at ease, knowing that you had those days of mourning the losses, and fearing the unknown future. It literally took me one year to recover the first time around. Thanks for the reminder. Strength and conditioning can be one of my goals.

Great advice for a good recovery. And avoid sneezing at all costs lol I agree with you on the fact that you and how much work you put into your recovery determines how well your recovery will be. It's going to be work I have been dealing with my back pain for over 8 years and I am not talking little herniated discs I mean huge herniated discs as to where I should have had surgery years ago but I was bull headed and waited and dealt with the pain not until I could not take it but until I lost the movement in my foot (foot drop). its nice to see positive videos but yours was different with the failed microdiscectomy and I feel that is were back surgery gets negative feel to it. Had I had the microdiscectomies years ago I am sure I would have been in for more surgeries until well the 3 levels of spinal fusion i just had. I am 6 weeks post op and stopped taking my pain meds ( listen to your drs) but I dont like meds the pain will remind me not to over do it (remember I am bull headed and will over do it) I cant wait to see where I am a year from now and like you I think it is very important to share our stories for anyone that is dealing with back pain or facing surgery. it is a life changing decision. thank you for sharing I subscribed and will have to binge watch your videos. again thanks for sharing

You are so honest. I needed to hear this soooo bad. I had an invasive sacral fusion,a repair of L5S1, L4L3, all hardware. It almost been 2 months and I feel like a failure sometimes. I was walking and doing real great at first then took a fall. Been dealing with horrible pain in my muscles in hip,in right side. Pain is worse right now so I’m doing what you are doing small walks. I do get depressed now and then. Surgeon checked all hardware with a scoliosis X-ray and said everything is ok. I feel guilty laying down but can’t take the pain. Every time I try to do a few stretches it feels worse after. So it’s frustrating. I’ve only taken Vicodin and muscle relaxers. But sometimes feel no or little relief. I needed this encouragement! God handed me this video today. Thank you soo much! I’m 62 Dr. said about a 12 month recup time too. God bless you hon and your family!

Had mine on Friday 5/10. I'm in bed watching this. I already feel great. Left leg pain gone just like you. Yes there has been a few shooting pains but I'm just less than a week post fusion. I had two micros done prior. One in 7/16 then literally 8/24 as it reherniated, then waited with pain just getting worse and worse needing steroids, injections, pain meds plus crutches ...Then days where it felt better... those days of feeling better got less and less. So 3 years later the fusion I was a little nervous. Great outcome in just days. Every time I wake up from a nap, It just easier to get up from bed right or left laterally.... the walking helps with the post op pain. Bro it's crazy though. This soreness, hardware, 22 staples, the blood suction pump I had for blood drainage. Is all nothing compared to that gruesome nerve pain. I feel like I've been shot in the back but again nerve pain you just Want to jump off a building. I'm almost a 6 year back pain victim with a lot of medical politics in the way (especially age) but hell when you have 20 years as a firefighter paramedic, you need something to finally work. So let the rehab roll. I'm very mentally ready. I'm ALWAYS here bro if you have any questions as well.

Thank you for this insight to your spinal surgery and your recovery. I am 5 months post-op decompression and lumbar spinal fusion. The recovery process seems agonizingly slow. But hearing from you gives me courage to keep the faith. I have not regained my balance so I am still using a walker to get around. I am trying to transition to a cane but this is difficult due to the weakness in my right leg. I am getting PT twice a week to help strengthen muscles but regaining my balance seems to take forever. At times I have had my doubts as to weather or not I will ever walk again unassisted. Hearing your video has give me renewed faith. I do not have any significant pain other than weakness and lack of endurance. At one time I had the terrible burning nerve pain that you describe so I can sympathize with you. I guess as my PT has said it takes time to heal but patiences is not a vertue that I possess. Age may also be a factor (72) but I dont want to give up. I will have to train myself to be patient and believe that I will walk again without the aid of a walker. Thank you again for this video on your experience.

10/1/19 I again had back surgery by a neuro surgeon.they had to break the previous fusion that I had done in 87',it was a lamanectomy w/fusion,L4 & L5.the pain doubled with that sugery.i've had much trouble with this surgery in that I don't understand everything my body has been going thru the 1st surgery was puny compared to this one and I simply was not as prepared for for surgery as i thought.this one was foespinal stenosis, scoliosis and degenerative disc desease.i was a passenger in a hi speed car accident 10/11/77 where the missed a curve and flipped multiple times and i was thrown from the car.i walked away from it at the time.it is incredible how hard it is to get to the point where they will actually fix you.so now here I am and once again not understanding everything going on but will to put forth the necessary effort to get back to the point that I can walk again.i thought the surgery would happen,I would heal and live happily ever after.Wrong.3.5 mths in and 2 wks ago something changed and some of the swelling in my legs went down to the point that I could almost walk like a robot.ever since the surgery the calfskin of my legs were swollen to the absolute maximum which does not allow proper movement for walking.they finally got me started in P.T.in the pool.oh I should mention that since the surgery the pain meds have been like taking aspirin, but I have never had trouble misusing pain meds and people get a bit crazy about this subject but when you've been taking hi powered pain meds of any king, after 35 yrs there's not much of any high that goes along with it and they do not any more do what they once did.for the most part through out all this time I've nearly always been able to make the pain meds last the time that they should but some times the pain just gets away from you and the barometric pressure and rain or snow would just kill me and yet mostly all I did for the past 12-15 were spent sitting in a chair much like being tied to a wheel chair.now I am ready and willing to all the work outs but I also have to get used to my back now.i have to learn all the ins and out of it.where I used to have pinched nerves, worn out disc's and curve spine, well it's taking some time to get acquainted with what I have now.somdtimes it feels like screw heads are trying to pop thru and sometimes I feel where the threads are thru the bone.my spine gives me terrible pain at the bottom of the spine and I guess it radiates to the outside edges of my hips and from there radiates to my thighs and all this is all new making it hard to walk and there is more but suffice it to say having the surgery and spending a bit of time healing is way more of an over implication than I thought.i guess it's just going to take time together to know the back I have now cause its damn well not the one I had but still hurts, still feels better and even the barometer is completely different.i think there's more healing to be done but the good thing is I can go on now and keep on exercising .I can't believe how week my muscles are.i hope at least some of this sounds familiar to you guys who've been there.i'm 64 and now have to try to get back to where I left off for the most part when I was 22.thats scary but I'm looking forward to the effort.i really had no idea just how much there is to this.the past 3.5 mths crawled by,I hope it picks up just a little bit.thanks for your video,it helps a little here about others.

@@makeupbykhani8178 unfortunately I am going to go have my 3 rd surgery. I am seeing a new dr who was referred to me by several people. They will be going in through the front to install a cage and they will be taking out some bone in my spinal cord where the nerves are rubbing up against. They will be flipping me over and going in to fix 3 screws that are loose and then they are going to extend my hardware to the very bottom of my spine . During this waiting period, I have lost 80 lbs so far by walking and fasting on a 16/8 cycle. My goal is to get to 100 lbs total loss by February ( surgery date ) . I still have extreme pain in my lower back from my hardware and my nerve pain is still intense but I fight through it to get my 10,000 + steps in ( in the morning) and after that , the rest of my day goes downhill. Thanks to you , you gave me the push I needed to get to where I am , and I am now ready to get through this next surgery. ❤️

My surgery was successful and I feel great, but I’m sick of negative people saying you can’t run or exercise hard after an operation! @@WilliamPort-HN2R well she cancelled her surgery. Said she is scared of surgery. But every human is tho. I personally think she is addicted to pain meds and yesterday went to pain management for a pill count and didn't have her meds so she will get no more. And does not seem to be concerned about getting the surgery at all now. Opiates make ppl lie and steal for that high they give u. Without it she cannot function. I've seen her decline over the past few months so I seen this happening. All I can do is prey for her. Until she admits she is an addict she will not get better. And I just do not see that happening any time soon. There is nothing wrong with admitting you are an addict. It's the 1st step to getting better.

Your video is inspiring. I found your video because I am at the last resort to finding a cure for my back and leg nerve pain. After explaining to my new orthopedist what I had done to relieve my back and leg pain, from physical therapy to taking strong pain killers to epidural injection, and nothing worked, on top of all that, my kidneys started to decline and I was diagnosed with CKD level 3B, so I really can't afford to take strong pain killers anymore, I am ready for surgery. When he reviewed my MRI and x-ray, he agreed that surgery would be best solution to my pain. Right now, I am waiting to hear back from my insurance, and once my insurance approves the procedure, we will start the preparation. Anyway, congratulations on you recovery, and I hope you are 100% better and back to your strong self.

Thanks man! I’m 6.5 weeks out from l4-l5 plif. And I hope I haven’t screwed the pooch by trying to do too much. I’m 62, but I consider myself to be in better shape than most 20 year olds. I’m a martial arts instructor of 40 years. Trained most every day until this operation. Went back to the mat 3 weeks out to teach classes. Haven’t kicked or done any body weight exercises, but, man, the hardware pain is excruciating. Had to take a morphene and oxy this morning just to get up. Depressed, thinking this thing didn’t work! Now, after listening to you, I’m scared I may have f#@ked the whole operation up. No more leg numbness but hip pain just like before the operation. I told my wife that I don’t know if the operation was a success (I DID have one of the best Drs in DC do the procedure). I’m definitely going to stop doing what I was doing and stay focused on the long term. Have a follow up with the doc in a week and a half. Hope everything is still in tact. Great video, thanks for sharing your experiences, along with the highs and lows during recovery. I've had two microdiscectomy surgeries on the disc between L4/L5 over a 6 week window. I was not a good patient after the 1st surgery. I'm a model patient after #2, no playing around this time. My spine doctor was clear, if I blowout my disc again between L4/L5 there's no 3rd micro, only a fusion. I hope to avoid that if at all possible. However, if I have no choice it's video's like this that give me hope that all isn't lost. I also have a friend who had a fusion between L5/S1 about 17 years ago. He even played softball and coached high school girls with no issues. Thanks again!

Thanks for taking time to make this video, I am about to have the same L5-S1 fusion after 12 years of back pain in about 2 weeks time, most of my pain though is in my lower back and buttocks area, when my pain hits it's like being stabbed in the back, I don't often get the leg pain although did when it first started and it sometimes would drop me to the ground, but after that just the stabbing pain. I have been on Tramadol 50mg tablets 8 a day for 12 years now and hope some day maybe in 12 months to not have to anymore. You have given me a positive outlook for the future and an approximate time scale for recovery thank you.

Big Poppa Port Haha 😂 Things looking positive so far, walking feels better and can't feel the stabbing pain at all, I've been able to go on a few small walks most up to 2.1 mile and have driven the car a couple of times also with ease, apart from getting in and out plus wouldn't want to drive it for long periods yet. Only discomfort is my back obviously feels tight and some discomfort sleeping with pains in my legs in certain positions but I've a long way to go and still healing. Trying to rest a lot in this first 6 weeks but can't wait to get started on my Physio hopefully after my next appointment. I had severe pain on the outside of my left upper leg only. After the surgery I was totally out of pain and do not take anything for pain. 3 months after the spinal fusion I had my R.hip replaced and that also worked out 100% I also can now do anything I desire with no restrictions. Hi, I have gone thru the same had a disectomy on l5/S10 12yrs ago then I had another disectomy and revision last June to clear scar tissue and he removed the rest of the disc. They are now suggesting a fusion and cage. Or the neuro stilimulator. I just don't know what to do for the best. If I think mechanically it makes sense to have the fusion, I suppose I am petrified of it going wrong again and also the recovery. I guess I will have to plan for the recovery as I. Am a single mum, need to ensure I have the right support. Thank you for this video it has made me think that I do actually need the surgery to fix the problem of having no disc on scar tissue mixed up with my sciatic nerve rubbing all the time. Then tough I would whether the nerve stimulator will be less invasive but I suppose it is covering up the pain and not fixing the mechanics if you like. What are you thoughts were you offered the neuro stimulator too.

Big Poppa Port - first off, thank you for such a detailed and straightforward description of your journey. Although I’m not in the exact same boat as you, this has helped me. I’m a 56-yr old male who’s been super active and fit all of my life. Mostly an avid cyclist (8-12 hr/wk), I’ve also been keen on resistance training and weights. I’ve had lower lumbar DDD for at least 15 years and it has caused scoliosis in that area (L2-5). I’ve had numerous injuries to my spine over the years, many of them on a bike, but nothing so serious that I needed hospitalization. I’d say chiropractic care, yoga, stretching and strength training gave me more time. Fast-forward to autumn of 2021: I start to develop sciatica all down my left leg that would cause me to limp out of bed but would alleviate after 30-45 min of warm compresses and stretching. Then on Christmas Day, the sciatica had become so bad that I was debilitated to mostly laying down on the couch during the day. No more physical activities. Constant sciatic nerve pain and left piriformis muscle tightness all day and all night. This quickly started the process of x-rays and scans and consultations with several orthopedic doctors and neurosurgeons. There was a cyst that had formed on L4-5 that was causing the nerve pain. But the overall condition of my lower lumbar was at the root of all the pain. (See my Instagram post with pre-op and post-op imaging instagram.com/p/CbOCt9Pvb6N/? ) After 3 consultations with my neurosurgeon, we chose the more extensive two-stage, two-day procedure that would include interbody fusion and instrumented fusion along with some decompression. Here is the actual description: Stage 1 - Left Direct Lateral Lumbar L2-L3, Lumbar L3-L4 Interbody Fusion Stage 2 - Lumbar L2-L3, L3-L4, L4-L5 Instrumented Fusion, Ponte Osteotomy and Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion at Lumbar L4-L5, possible Decompression at L2-L3 and Lumbar L3-L4, pending MRI - Left I am now 9 days post-surgery. The pain has been decreasing with each day, albeit numbness in my left quad and groin from the Stage 1 direct lateral surgery that was from the side. This will subside in weeks or may take months. My doctor is one of the only surgeons in the area to perform this procedure. The prognosis is 4-6 wks no BLTs. 4-6 months 100% recovery. After watching your video, with much less fusion and you being a bit younger than me, I am mentally preparing for a longer recovery road but hoping for the shorter one. :) Thanks again for your honesty and straightforward info. Cheers! 🍻

I can feel your pain... I go in for mine 2/12/17 (fusing l5,l4,l3).. I'm taking 60 to 90mgs of hydrocodone a day...and it don't work anymore. People don't know what it's like being in that kind of pain... I'm only 53 and walking with a cane...and can't work or do anything besides sit and take pills (thank god for game consoles....lol)... I really hope this fixes mine, I can't live like this....thanks for sharing....it has given me hope, God bless and thank you for your service.

ETHRON1 I’ve never experienced anything like nerve pain. I can honestly say I’ve been pain free for over a year now. Please keep us posted on your recovery.

Believe me the pain was beyond excruciating, I am doing good, can finally walk abit without the walker...like you most of what I have now is surgical and hardware pain...but the other pain was gone as soon as I woke up...though my back felt like someone went over me with a garden tiller...LOL. I start PT in a couple of weeks....the worst thing for me now is not being able to do the "Man" things around the house...Like take out the trash stuff like that.... Thanks for the vid...it really helped me... Oh and I did take your advise....sitting in high back office chairs...it does help... and easier to get out of too....

So how did your surgery go? Like you, I'm 53 and am 6 weeks post op, lamenectomy L4L5, L5 S1 w/ fusion. 1st week after surgery was hell, but today, I feel awesome and I have my life back. I don't regret the surgery for a second. I hope you're feeling better these as well. Best of luck!

I had L3 4 and 5 fused on Dec 21 2018. It is now Feb 10 2019 and I am on the road to recovery. I am still wearing the back brace and will for a while to come but I am getting better. I am still stiff when I get up from bed sometimes and have a slight pain in my butt when walking but very slight. I only took two pain pills after surgery and three muscle spasm pills. I mean after I got home. While in the hospital I was never in pain because I took the pain meds every six hours. They told me not to let pain sneak up on me and overwhelm so I didn't. Good luck to you.

Love it. I'm x regular force 23 yrs (British Armed Forces) followed by another 8 yrs vol fire fighter; damaged my back 3 times during those years with an additional fall from a horse at the gallop blowing out L5/S1, 5/4 and 4/3. L5/S1 has taken a beating and in the past 2 yrs I can sympathise and totally understand the nerve an mechanical pain elements; yes find yourself a good surgeon. I'm now living in NZ, I was fortunate to have an ortho and vascular surgeon (Ryan Johnstone and Richard Evans) these guys fused my L5/S1 at the end of Oct 17....now 10 weeks out....it was an ALIF approach....a minor post op infection fixed with a 10 day course of antibiotics; and the first 3 weeks were hard work, I went back to work at week 4, drove my car week 5 and am back at work full time....it is about mental agility and taking the bull by the horns and owning your own situation. I have a review at 3 months out and the difference even now between the pain I was in, even taking morphine etc, only a matter of weeks ago and now is huge....I do not have pain, day one post op I walked the ward....I was out of surgery early evening so an immediate walk did not happen however, first thing the morning following the op I was up and walking, I was pain free and apart from pushing the boundaries trying to do more and more, I remain pain free. It is a big step and surgery is an individual choice, often forced by circumstance, it's a major op and, yes you might just die. But you might just die crossing the road. My decision was yes....and, I would do it again. I have my life back. For those thinking about surgery - don't over analyize things and frighten yourself out of making the decision. Thanks for your video, thank you for your service. Good luck to you and others considering spinal surgery.

Thank you so much for posting this! I go back to see my surgeon tomorrow and I know I’m gonna have to have a 2 level fusion of some sort probably L34 L45 and I am scared to death I work full-time for University basically behind the computer but I also have a very busy lifestyle I live on a farm I have 2 horses, 2 sheep & 4 pygmy goats so I’m used to being very physical. You’ve definitely given me inspiration and hope that this is going to be the right thing to do. Now I just have to quit smoking once again because I know my body will not heal if I don’t. It was really nice hearing your story about your family and what you’ve been through and I’m really happy that you can pick your children up now. God Bless!

Hey WIll, great video. I have been through everything you talk about and more and agree with you 100%. I am currently 2 1/2 weeks post op for a L3-S1 fusion with hardware, my own bone grafts, cadaver bone grafts and the need for chemical bone growth stimulator for assured complete fusion. I was exposed to chemicals in the Military that gave me a disease that has caused my lower back to be completely messed up. This last surgery was the final of 5 total back surgeries in 2 years. The nerve pain you talk about was very similar for me but in both legs. Not trying to one up you or anything I just wanted to comment that everything you say is true in spades. I have been there and will now be dealing with this one final time hopefully. Love your video because most of what I see especially on things like my multilevel fusion is so negative. I know in one year I will be doing all the things you are currently and am excited. Thank you for the inspirational videos and the lack of a negative message to us out here looking for positive outcomes vs the people who don’t do any of the work to make themselves better after surgery. Like you the patience part is the hardest part. The value of diet, exercise, sleep, zero bending, lifting or twisting and just the winning attitude is what will bring me up to the success level you have achieved. As a brother in arms I deeply respect all you are doing. Thank you.

Hi! I am a 68 yr. old female. Thank you so much for posting your videos. I am 6 weeks out of L4 - S1 spinal fusion. Titanium, screws, bone grafting. I so wish I had gone online earlier and found your videos. I also feel I was given insufficient recovery instructions and have spontaneously done some things I shouldn't have....like the recliner (only twice because it felt wrong) and the socks, picking up a piece of food I dropped on the floor. More BLT than I should have. Regretted them all and will find out next week the damage, if any. Overall, except I am also impatient and hate asking for help, My pain level has greatly improved since before surgery. My right butt cheek, leg and foot are no longer on fire, still a little weak, but they work and I don't have to ice down my foot at night just to be able to sleep.. My back does hurt and I take pain meds, anxiety meds and gabapentin. Your video has let me know that 6 weeks/ 2 months out is NO time at all, to be patient, that I will be limited for quite awhile to heal properly. I had not realized that. Was told no PT yet, just walk and walk some more. Thanks again. I will be back :)

Paula Schumacher thank you for your words. I apologize for not seeing this earlier. I think one of the best pieces of advice my doctor gave me was drilling that this is a 12 month recovery. I’m glad you are doing better and wish you a full recovery. Please keep us posted.

Hi, I am not quite at the point of surgery yet, since I do not have leg pain, only tingling, mostly in the morning, from L4-L5 disc. But, I found your video to be one of the most inspiring and informative about surgery and recovery. It should be mandatory viewing for those undergoing surgery or after surgery, especially the mental part.

I’ve been through two discectomy surgeries and now need a fusion. My disc ruptured again and that pain is something else. You want to die. If you ever have that pain you’ll need the surgery. Don’t wait. Your mri should reveal the extent of the problem. Best of luck.

Born Champs Media things are going okay I guess but it’s only been 3 months. I continue to have nerve discomfort in left foot and calf at times, which can feel sensitive not wanting anything to touch it, numbness and even extreme coldness. 6 weeks ago I started to notice increase spine instability clunking with transitional movements, which I feel could be from the non fused segments. It feels weird and sounds crazy but no pain. No therapy yet just walking and with too much walking the nerve pain intensifies. I hate when it get cold, rain, or snows I feel everything bones aches. My mental is a challenge at times because I can become inpatient with the healing process. Otherwise I’m just taking it one day at a time.

Hi, I am one of those success stories. Couldn’t agree more...do your rehab! I laid flat for 3 months and every hour I had my alarm set and got up and walked. When I started I only walked to the neighbours fence, 6 mths later I was walking 6 kms. Glad to hear you share your success and encouraging others. I am almost 4 yrs now and still try to avoid recliner chairs! Kind regards Claire from Australia

I am dealing with a botched fusion. My surgeon didn’t do a good job. I ended up with a screw in my disc space and coursed the L 4 nerve. After bring this problem to his attention, the surgeon removed the right side hardware a year later. I am now at my 4 month post-op from the hardware removal and I have no feeling in the bottom of my right foot, weakness of my right leg, foot drop and terrible pain that is far worse than before the 2nd surgery. I am looking for a surgeon to review my MRI and Myelogram that was done last month. I am not getting any answers from the surgeon or other that he has referred me to. I understand you wanting the neurologist to just cut your leg off. The pain and cold pain is terrible. All prayers are welcomed and any good advise is a plus. Thanks for telling your story--you are an inspiration!

I am 5 weeks post op with a fusion from T4-S1 for scoliosis and spondylolisthesis and feeling so much better. I was experiencing the same type of pain and unable to pick up a cup of coffee without being in excruciating pain and said if there was no relief I would not have wanted to go on, but thankfully there is! I know I will battle with not getting back to my active lifestyle until the year mark but it is good to hear other stories like yours and be encouraged. I am in the military as well so it was good to hear that they allowed you to supplement your PT test. Thank you for sharing!

After having Severe pain for the last 5 or 6 years and countless doctors I've finally found a surgeon who has a great plan to do a L5 S1 spinal fusion and disc replacement surgery I'm about 2.5 weeks out and nervous as hell however I'm also excited to get back to being happy and being the great dad and husband I was before this horrible pain started. Im tired of taking the maximum amount of heavy narcotic pain medication that a person can be prescribed just to get out of bed and barely be able to function. I sold my semi truck because I couldn't haul livestock anymore a year and a half ago and doing what I was doing was my dream job from the time I was about 5 or 6 and I'm currently 41.. your video is inspiring to me.. thank you for your service and your time.. God bless you

I may be facing this soon. Day advice on things to prepare for? How long before you could manage the pain without all the heavy duty meds? How long before you could drive? Operate a riding mower or tractor? How long before you could shower and dry your self and get dressed on your own? My surgeon says I would mostly be able to go back to full duty after 4-6 months but reading a lot of comments about their fusion was only 75-80% done after 8-9 months. Sorry for all the questions. I work in the communications field where my job involves climbing ladders, climbing poles and climbing up into a bucket truck. Some are saying they had to be off for a year. Brother I understand about dealing with the nerve pain it is so crippling and so unbearable to the point even pain meds don’t dull it. I’m glad I found your channel and I hope your doing much better these days! Sorry for the questions. Would love to ask more but will save them for another time .

What an inspiration.. after 3 back surgeries finally ending up fused from S1 to T5 within 9 years I can relate to alot of your journey minus the drinking..lol sadly two days ago due to pain recurring in my lower back to my pelvis and leg for about s month.. an xray shows one of my pins have broken. I was so discouraged ... there are supposed to me extremely strong hardware! The only explanation I can think of was a motorcycle cycle accident I had over a year ago and broke my leg in two places messed my knee (got hit by a deer on the road) so here I am getting ready for knee surgery in a week from this accident and now will need to investigate if the broken pin was a result from this accident .. your trials have given me some strength to push forward. Thank you for sharing... also even though I am Canadian I Thank you for your service. I support the military in Canada and USA 100%.
