My question is for anyone but I'm 2 1/2 years post op from an A.L.I.F. L5/S1 that definitely alleviated my extreme sciatica. My problem is that I haven't slept more than 6 hours a night since the surgery, usually in a recliner because my bed makes my lower back pain worse. I never wake up feeling refreshed. I have an alarm clock called pain and it sucks. Once I get up and moving it goes away. I also have a labor intensive job which keeps me in shape( carpenter). Has anyone else had similar complications?

williamtate79 that’s a great question. I’m going to pin it to the top, so maybe others will respond. I’m sure you have tried this, but I sleep with a pillow between my legs. It’s a night and day difference for me how much better I rest since surgery.

williamtate79 Yes am experiencing the same problems after my microdycetomy on L5-S1.. I really have lots of pain at night and find it difficult to turn. Once up up and about the pain is much better .This also happens when a seat for long periods 😀

The lumbar is so different from the cervical. My lower back has stopped hurting for the most part. That is where I felt pain prior to surgery. But the problem was acute and long standing in my neck. My dad had surgery on the lumber and he's 80 hes absolutely loving life now, and he is quite satisfied.

I’m 7 months out from lumber fusion L5S1. I too use a pillow and that really helps. I do seem to have a back pain alarm clock though, lol. Early morning 4 or 5 no matter what I do I can’t get comfortable enough to go back to sleep unless I get up and use icy hot or just get up and stay up. The pain goes right away once I’m walking around doing things. I also have a time limit on sitting as well. Recently I had a epidural injection to help reduce some inflammation that I think I brought on by walking too much too soon. It has helped a lot. I too feel like family and friends are definitely tired of me not being back to normal yet. My doctor told me to try to ignore my ‘I can do anything personality”, for a while so I can heal and I’m trying. These you tube videos have helped me to understand its much closer to a year for most recovery to be really good it seems. Trying to be patient and not do too much but not lose hope for complete recovery. Thanks for your continued updates, they are encouraging!

I am 3 months s/p L4-5 fusion, I had problems with sleeping the first 6 weeks. The hardest time was when I was giving up my nightly 1/2 tab of oxycodone - my brain really wanted that small dose of oxy and wouldn't let me sleep. I switched to CBD with melatonin and got relief, was able to wean off of that, and now just taking Tylenol before bed and sleeping soundly. I do have to sleep with a pillow between my knees and use a bedrail to pull myself if I want to change positions.

I have never commented on anything on KZbin before, but I felt the need now. I have had 2 previous l5-s1 discectomy/ lamenectomy surguries in the past 4 years. Recently reinjured, and now my surgeon is wanting to do the fusion after an epidural which has never worked for me in the past. Just a few hours ago had the epidural, so I shall see, but have zero confidence based on previous experience. The point of my comment is that I am pretty terrified of the surgery, and I was not at all with my two previous surgeries. Your videos have inspired me beyond words, and I am no longer as scared as I was just a few hours ago, thanks to you. I just wanted to let you know that your videos have helped is all I was trying to say I guess, so thank you more than you’ll ever know.

Hey there Poppa Port. Even though it has been 3 yrs since your surgery. You are the only person via video worth watching. There are 3 to 4 other spinal fusion patients posting video's that are very painful to watch due to their attitude while posting their video's. Ughhhhhh !!! Yours I will watch because you are straight up, no BS. I am in my 7th week post op. Just started outpatient PT, along with Water therapy. Been in those rough weeks of "did I make the right choice on going through with surgery", along with a bit of some self inflicted depression. You are inspiring and honest. Allows me to believe there is a light at the end of all this..... Thank you, take care. Keep those video's of encouragement coming. Donna

I’m a 53 year old and an 17 days out from my ALIF on L5/S1. Been dealing with this for 15 years following a baseball injury where I got trucked at home plate. FYI... it was my last play on the baseball field and YES, I held onto the ball. Anyway, during my MRI review appointment I was informed that I’ll also need a 3 level fusion at C3-5. WONDERFUL! Hope to have both surgeries in the calendar year so I can get a BOGO. Thanks for your very informative videos. Doing great work!

Today was my first pool PT session. It really was amazing. I’m a little over a month post op from L5S1 fusion. My leg pain is gone! I got 4 screws and 2 rods, I had a bulging disk and a 15 mm forward slide of my L5. So the Doc went in and pulled that back and put the spacer black in. The leg and back pain is gone but now I’m dealing with crazy nerve pain in my legs from the nerves waking up and healing. It’s still better than before. Good luck everyone on getting ready to have this done.

I have been told that I need all of my lumbar spine fused. I had a failed laminectomy from last June. I am seeing a total of five surgeons, one of whom is both A neurologist and Orthopedist. My orthopedic surgeon felt that my surgery was too specialized for him and has referred me to a doctor that is both and ortho and a nuro and does the type of surgeries daily. I have been out of 6/7 pain level for about six years. I too have done the epidurals, physical therapy, and laminectomy and I am only getting worse. Part of my problem is scoliosis, hence the total lumbar fusion. Thank you for making these videos. I’ll have to find someone on KZbin who is had more than just the L4 L5, though that is my worst joint. God bless. I too am a from South Carolina but live in Virginia now.

AS Hanson I’m from Georgetown County! I know a few people including a young girl who have full fusions due to scoliosis. One a 13 year old girl. None have channels though. Truthfully a couple including the girl are doing great. A couple are not, but I know one that did not never really tried to recover after her surgery. From day one she sorta resigned herself to her chair. I wasn’t in her shoes and my surgery definitely wasn’t as large. I truly wish you well.

3:24 My thoughts exactly on rolling the dice. Dealing with pain from my Army days (separated 2003) it's now 2022. Figured I can't deal with it any longer, worst that can happen is it stays the same. Haven't had the surgery yet but it's getting close. Meeting with surgeons and hopefully will have it scheduled soon. L5-S1 ALIF. Luckily not so much leg pain but damn if I can bend or twist without wishing I was dead some days. Thank you for your service brother.

had spinal fusion and a bone graph on L4 L5 8 months ago, totally enjoyed your story because it came to a point where i just knew i had to have it done . I too was scared shitless im 66 never spent more than a day in the hospital. I have something that i think is very important to add for when you first come home is to have an alarm or have Alexa wake you up every four hours to take your pain pills because i found myself sleeping a lot longer and waking up in severe pain and taking too many pain pills . Well i ended up running out of pills and you dont ever want to do that not with this type of pain brother theres more to this story but i just wanted to let people know theres a reason they keep waking you up in the hospital and that its so your pain level is under control

Hey Big Poppa Port, thank you for sharing. I will be having L3/L4/L5 Alif surgery in the fall. My lumbar spine is basically shot, L1-L5. My neuro said he'll start with the L3-L5 procedure to see how much relief it will provide. I've been putting it off for years and I'm now waiting until fall so I can play golf this year. I'll be doing a series of Epidurals to get me thru the summer. I've lived with 7-9 pain most of my adult life (just turned 60) and finally reached the point that I can't take it anymore. I'm very encouraged by your postings. I've always been a fast healer and I guess, thankful that I have an extremely high threshold of pain. Continued success in your healing process brother.

I’m 4.5 months post op from spinal fusion at L4-L5. I dealt with the pain for 8 years before I had surgery. It felt like my legs were on fire and going to shoot off. The MRIs I got over the 8 years showed minimal damage. Finally after 8 years my back gave out completely and I couldn’t even lift my right foot. Once they opened me up they found the root nerves at throughout those levels were completely crushed. Originally going into the surgery the neurosurgeon said the procedure should only take 2.5-3 hrs to complete. Once they opened me they found all the damage that didn’t show up on the MRI and ended up having to do a lot more cutting of muscles and reconstruction to decompress the root nerves. I ended up on the table for over 6 hours. Now when I woke up in the recovery room that debilitating nerve pain I had for 8 years was completely gone. With that being said my lower back felt like it had been destroyed with an axe. At 4.5 months I’m doing PT 2 hrs twice a week and working on cardio every other day. I still get extreme pain in my lower back from surgery and require pain medication or my blood pressure shoots through the roof because of the pain. I’m definitely getting better, but at a snails pace. I just take it one day at a time. I also have cervical spine issues that I deal with, but slightly less painful then my back where I get injections to help control pain and spasms. I have multiple injuries to my back. 2 are from the military and blast/concussion injuries. I left the military and I had pain, but it was bearable. I became a police officer and was struck from behind on top of the head with one of those big silver bullet fire extinguishers during a brawl. Then I don’t remember this, but what happened my partner told me. We were at a domestic and the male pushed me and try to go for the knife rack in the kitchen. I managed to punch him good in the face stunning him. I then push him back and hit him like a linebacker. He went down next to the island in the kitchen and I managed to completely knock myself unconscious striking my skull right into the corner of the stone countertop where most of the force went straight down my spine. I have no memory from the time we arrived on scene till 8 days later. Finally I was involved in 2 car accidents while at work as police officer. First was a broad side responding to a shooting and DUI driver went through a red light striking our RPC. The second was I was stopped at a red light and was reaching down to grab my coffee and somehow my left shoulder slightly came out of the shoulder belt when I was rear ended by a Jeep doing approximately 50 mph. My face went through the MDT screen. Not only was my face pouring blood, but my neck and back felt like a hand grenade went off on them. So after all that I only had injections and PT because the MRIs still all read the same I had multiple herniated discs, but only at 3 levels were they “mildly flattening the thecal sac around the spinal cord and nothing about nerve impingement. So after all these including the multiple concussions/TBIs I suffered along with vertigo I kept going back to work until the end of August 2018 when my lumbar spine finally failed. I just got done work and my back was extremely flared up so I began doing PT exercises to try and calm it down. I went into a bridge and that was it. Next thing I knew I couldn’t get up off the floor. I had to call my wife who was out shopping to come home and her and my son assisted me into bed. I was lucky enough to find my neurosurgeon because again the MRI really read no different and it being a workers comp injury the orthopedic surgeon wanted me to do epidurals again which wasn’t happening. So it took a few months, but the surgery was finally approved. I actually wasn’t scared going to get it because I had been in such pain for so long I figured it couldn’t be any worse. Like I said above I still have substantial to extreme pain in my lower back, but it’s all from the surgery. All the nerve pain was gone when I woke up from surgery. I still deal with bad nerve pain from my neck/cervical spine, but it’s nothing compared to the lumbar nerve pain I dealt with. The moral of the story is just because the MRI doesn’t show something doesn’t mean there isn’t damage there. I lived for 8 years wondering if I was crazy or just being a pussy and not being able to ruck up. When the surgeon told me all the damage that was in there and what they had to do fix it I was actually relieved because I knew I wasn’t crazy or being a baby anymore. Now I’m improving steadily, but I have at least a year recovery and could be up to 2 depending on how everything heals from the spinal fusion to all the muscles that had to be cut to properly fix my lumbar spine and decompress the root nerves. Only other thing I could say if you get the surgery listen to your body and don’t over do it. Also if if you consume tobacco products or nicotine quit! The neurosurgeon told me straight up I had a 25% chance of the spinal fusion working if I continued to smoke so I went back to my Marine Corps days and was using Copenhagen before the surgery until he saw me with that and he quickly informed me anything with nicotine so I was able to walk out of that appt and quit cold turkey. I smoked and and dipped for almost 25 years prior and had tried to quit multiple times prior, but this gave me the right motivation. Now I still crave a cigarette everyday and I’m at day 168, but I know what the alternative is. He told me I was young and healthy enough that I would probably fall into the 25%, but within 10 years they would be back in doing another spinal fusion above and below where mine is now. Also it would continue the degeneration of my cervical spine issues. Best of luck to all and take a day at time!

Good morning Poppa. I am thrilled that you are doing so well after surgery and have your life back. My back pain started at least 10 years ago, I am now 65. ^ months or a year ago what you describe as nerve pain began. It reached a point where I would walk into the supermarket and on many occasions could not get back to the car. Pain would bring up tears. I have been thru all treatments many times, chiro, injections, PT, more injections and things only got worse. I was afraid to get the surgery. I had both hips replaced so I had some idea of the recovery. Fact is after my 2nd hip was installed I was back to work in 2 weeks. I finally met a Neuro here in St Augustine who put my mind at ease, I was still scared but ready to move ahead. S1 to L5. The surgery took 8 hours and I was released 4 days later. Yesterday was 3 weeks. Before the surgery I had planned to drive from Florida to Pa after 2 weeks. LMAO may have been a little optimistic. I have a brace they gave me that I wear when I walk outside or ride in the car. I hate it. I have been sitting in my recliner so I am happy to have seen your video about NO recliner. Right now I take 1 Hydrocodone every 4 hours which helps but I still suffer alot. My incisions will heal well enough to get in my pool this weekend finally. I am in pain standing ,sitting laying down so I am excited to try water walking. I also have a sleep # bed and based on your comments have the position of the head set too high. Need to flatten it out. I work hard ,play hard up until now! I was still playing ball at 55 and had to stop because my back and legs. Optimistically I thought I would be much further along by now but after watching your video I need to mentally adjust. I do feel better each week. Small steps but slightly better. I tried walking 1/4 mile yesterday and paid dearly!! Doc says go shorter more often. Thanks for all you time and encouragement. My email is grillinjeb22@gmail.com. Thank you for sharing!! I’m just starting physical therapy but am most likely going to need a fusion. I’m in constant pain (as long as I can remember but really started getting bad when I was 18, I’m now 32) I’ve done PT before and it helped. Two kids later, I’m having more and more pain.. more frequent “flare ups” where I have extreme difficulty waking/bending/turning. Numbness and tingling down the back of my legs (primarily the left) not much relieves it. I’ve never been sedated and it terrifies me.. through 4 impacted wisdom teeth and an EGD, I chose no sedation. Also had two children without an epidural because I could tolerate the pain knowing it would end... living daily in pain is very different 😥 Your video really helped me become more comfortable with the thought of surgery. Thank you!!

I had to write you Sir. I’m going in for my L5S1 surgery in 2 weeks after 3 years of a type of pain you have to experience to be able to know. There are no words to explain sciatica. Due to the pandemic my surgery has been postponed twice but it looks like it’s a go this time and i’m shit’n kittens.. i’m not worried about the surgery itself but I’m worried it’s going to change the man I know myself to be. I’m an extremely active individual and i’m terrified my pain might be worst after the surgery or even limit my ability to move more than it is now. Your words really hit home with me because I also have looked into getting a prosthetic leg but I couldn’t find a doctor to do the surgery. Every other video I have seen on the internet has told me to not do the surgery basically but after 3 years of rehab (that was useless) countless hours of researching and trying new stretches, pain medications and doctor visits this is my last option at trying to get my life back. I just wanted to write and thank you for actually doing a positive post and it’s helped ease my concern a little going into the surgery. If you would like I’ll keep you posted with my progress as I don’t use social media i’ll come back and post again on this video. thank you sir , god bless.

I had surgery to cut the bulging discs. It did not stop the pain. It got worse. It's been over 3 years. I've tried to live with it but I can't even walk or stand for long before I have to squat or lay down. I have a spinal fusion set up in two weeks. Super nervous. I'm only 35 and I just want to enjoy going to my boys football games and walking with my wife around places. I'm a very active person but this has changed my life dramatically. I feel stuck because of the pain. I'm glad you are pain free. I sure hope that God sees in in my future to be pain free also.

@@JoseLuisRodriguez-nn4vc man to be honest, it only got worse. After both surgeries the pain got worse and my durability got much worse. I feel like the docs don't really know whats wrong and they are just guessing at it. The last one was a great doctor but it didn't help and just got worse. Every day is a struggle to keep pushing forward. I've tried a handful of small procedures including the spinal implant device and none of it has worked. I'm not saying that none of these has ever helped anyone but I sure wish I would have never had any of the major surgeries. If I could give any advise, I would consult a pain management dr and try all of the small procedures before you do anything else. They can do the trial spinal implant device which only takes 15 min and it non invasive. If it works, then you can do the permanent which still wasn't bad. For me it didn't work but I talked to a few people who said it did.

ALIF L5-S1 November 30,2018. Was in severe pain, had shots and nerve ablation that did not help for very long. After looking at my MRI neurosurgeon said I had two choices- live like this or have surgery and he showed me exactly what was wrong on my MRI. I had stopped eating because I was in so much pain-lost 25 lbs. no medication helped. Today I am much better, very happy with my decision to have surgery. I do have a problem with muscle stiffness, not sure why. But sooooo much better than before. I was very scared prior to surgery, I’m a nurse and heard many patients tell me they would never have back surgery again. It really was not bad at all. I felt so much better because I wasn’t having pain. Back surgery has improved so much in the last ten years as explained by my Dr. his advice to me was you have to the right surgery for the right reason.

Joshua Stennis All surgery is risky. I couldn’t live like that anymore. I was in terrible pain and had stopped eating cause it made me so sick. My plan was to find the best Neurosurgeon in my area and have the right surgery done for the right reason. I am so much better. Best thing I have done. I wish I had it done sooner. The only other surgeries I had in the past was gallbladder removal. Nothing as serious as back surgery. So I was very cautious, but realized I was not really living. I had come to a time where a critical decision had to be made. I’m completely happy with my decision. My life is so much better. I think the key is to find the right surgeon.

Joshua Stennis yes pain is gone. They did ALIF L5-S1 with rods and screws in the back via robot. I was surprised that I didn’t a lot of pain after surgery. My leg pain and hip pain is gone. My back will get stiff with prolonged sitting, but my excruciating pain that I had before surgery is gone. My life is back to normal, doing hobbies, swimming and working. My back was injured commuting 33 years by Ford Vanpool from Woodbridge and Stafford VA to DC, 5 days a week, 100 miles round trip. Because it will be the most serious surgery I've had to date. So keep up the great comms. If you would like me to let you know how I'm recovering, just let me know. I go in sometime on 9 May and will be in the hospital till probably 13 May. I'm going through the Anderson Clinic, Mount Vernon Hospital, Alexandria VA. My doctor's one of the bes in our region. Just to add, my pain started last summer and became increasingly worse until I collapsed back on my right calf three different times. The collapse was rough and effected the entire leg. Injuries just resolved last week, except for the knee. The nerve pain is hell. Haven't had a full nights sleep since 18 March. So thanks again for all the comms, your info really settles the nerves regarding the surgery. Thanks Paul

Then 1 month later had a 2 section laminectomy and things became 10 times worse! It's now 1 year later and have one leg that is electrified and shooting debilitating pain through my toes with horrible back pain. Im going in for a double fusion in 2 weeks and hope I have the same success with my nerve pain. Until you have had nerve pain, it's very hard to explain how bad it is.

Hey Brother, Ret MP 1SG and Jumpmaster here, I’m setting in Womack Army Medical Center at Bragg 2 days post-op from L5/S1 anterior and posterior Fusion with Spacers. Damage done from years of jumping, riding horses, Harley’s and Combat ops. My nerve pain is gone I went thru the VA first and after years of trying physical therapy and pain management, the epidural in December caused more pain I came to Womack in Jan. Dr (Major) Cleveland got in me into surgery. I spent almost 10 hours in surgery due to the damage been greater than what the XRays, MRI and CT Scans revealed. I was able to get up and walk unassisted by 0900 on Day 1 post op. Now I’ve just got to focus in following Dr’s orders and not pushing myself, I’ve never been one to set in front of the TV since i retired I started a G.S. career and am a Vol Fire Chief along with the horse farm I call home. I’ve been watching your videos since I came out if surgery, I was nervous about the procedure but Womack’s orthro is one of the best year in DoD they rebuilt my left foot and left shoulder after bad Landing while in active duty and got me jumping again and repaired my wrist after a motorcycle wreck soon after I retired. I’m hoping to keep progressing and be back to 100% by next year. Great to find Another vet with my Values and drive posting his experiences.

I’m glad you’re still doing well. I’m 16 months post-op from L4-5 & L5-S1 fusion. I’m still having considerable pain and taking low dose pain meds, along with a med for sciatica. They tell me I have Failed Surgery Syndrome, which I don’t really agree with, because my pain is not as severe. I was at 9-10 all the time and down to 5-6 now. I had hurt my back 5 1/2 years previous to my surgery, so that could be the problem. I do massage twice a month now and go to a chiropractor for upper body adjustments and Accupuncture. Those have made a world of difference. I have scoliosis and I think not getting adjusted contributed to my pain. I’ve had a steroid injection for sciatica and tested to see if Radial Frequency Ablation would work. I tested positive, but I’m unsure about having it done. It would be something I’d have to do every 6 months to 2 years, whenever the nerves healed themselves. My pain doctor suggested getting a Quell device that blocks the pain receptors in the brain. It’s worn around your leg, just below the knee. I’ve been using it for the last 6 weeks and that seems to help. So, even though these things help some, I still haven’t been able to decrease my meds much. If the weather would stay great, it would help. 😂 I think I just need a little more time to heal, since it did take 5 1/2 years to get to that point. I’m interested in what other’s experiences have been.

Will Port thank you, Will. I did go to another neurosurgeon that my chiropractor recommended. My chiropractor thought, based on my symptoms when I went in, that I definitely needed surgery. That surgeon was an older doctor and well respected by my chiro. He said he wouldn’t recommend more surgery for my sciatica that’s actually being irritated at another joint than previously. He said the more surgeries you have, the more chance for failure. He told me I should give it some time. I hate that, because every medical professional says that and don’t say how long. I asked him and he said a few years. 😳 That was just another depressing dr visit giving no hope. My surgeon told me he could go in and make room for the nerve and brace the back. I’m thinking of doing this. My last hospital experience was a nightmare! That’s why I’ve been reluctant to have another surgery. My insurance only covers one of the two hospitals he goes to. Another problem I have is, I can’t travel further than a half hour away, due to increased pain and even then, it’s painful. I had the ALIF procedure done and my surgeon decided tat the last second to not, also make a small incision in the back to put in screws to brace it. I feel that that’s why I’m having pain while traveling. Every time the brakes are hit, or my husband pumps the gas pedal, I’m just dying. I have traveled an hour away a few times and it’s always a terrible experience and I need to recover the next day.

Still have some siatic pain he said it could be 6 months to a year. The worst part of the surgery was i had the worst headache you can imagine the whole time i was in the hospital.nothing they gave me would help that was 50 percent of my pain.they even took me down for a cat scan to make sure i was not leaking any spinal fluid which causes extreme headaches but said all was good. Before the surgery my left leg was numb an sometimes id get pain an my leg would give out. After surgery i dont need a cane to walk., however i feel like i hsve thousands of tacks hiting my thigh at the same time over sn over with a burning sensation. Like an unwanted tattoo. My shin area from below my knee to the top of my foot is in extreme pain. Sometimes i randomly feel like ive been stung by a bee all over my leg. The dr says its normal due to my nerves being conpressed for so long. Now they are trying to wake up.??? I cant say im doing worse but i do feel stronger. Hope the nerves settle down.

Been watching your videos and I maybe having this surgery soon I’m trying to get in at Vanderbilt for a second opinion. I’ve lived with this pain for 8-10 years now. I’ve had numerous doctors tell me over the years it’s just arthritis and I had to live with it and take anti-inflammatory meds which has never helped. I just found out a month ago why I’ve been hurting so bad over the years. I had went to see a knee surgeon about doing knee replacement surgery, both of my knees are wore out from spending 30 years working of ladders and climbing poles, as soon as he checked me he sent me to have an MRI done on my back and neck. The next week I went back for a follow up and he told me that he didn’t want to do my knee replacement until I got my back fixed, he doesn’t think I can do the physical therapy because of my back being so bad, he told me that the majority of my leg pain was coming from my back. After going to see a back surgeon he told me that I could either continue the way I am and get worse over time, do injections to try to get some relief and try to get by or do surgery. So now I’m trying to get in at Vanderbilt to get a second opinion, at least I’ve already had xrays and a mri done recently. I’m kind of relieved that I’m starting to get some answers but also pissed that I’ve lived with this for so long now. Not looking forward to being down and off work for a year but so ready to feel better. It’s been inspiring watching your story and I hope I can get my life back and be pain free again. How long was it before you could drive after having the surgery? My family is a 1000 miles away and hopefully I will be where I can drive by the holidays to be able to see my family.

Mike Thanks...

Michael Torriero that doesn’t sound unlikely. My nerve damage I think probably took 5-7 months to fully repair just based on feel. I was 36 and this is not scientific but it appears from the people I’ve met on this journey that the longer our nerves were squeezed and those over around 45 take a little longer to rejuvenate. I think overall health can make a difference too. I hope you heal quick.

I had multi-level fusion (4 levels) Dec 5th 2018. I have experienced atrophy in both legs and total loss of leg strength. After many months of PT and building leg strength I still fatigue easily. I am have experienced a symptom almost like sciatica and pressure on the L5 nerve root. This causes weakness in the right leg and burning sensation in my toes on the right foot. I had an epidural injection but that didn't last. The pain manager thinks it's edema pressing against the nerve. Anyone with suggestions? Thanks!

Mark I’m sorry you are having these issues. It’s not uncommon to have pain and issues up to a year following the surgery from my experience, but you should definitely be talking to your surgeon about this. Has he done x rays or scans recently to see if there is impingement? I hope it goes away on it’s on. I found altering my diet to reduce inflammation helped me get past some of the pain around the same timeline you are in.
@markschoonover2003

@@WilliamPort-HN2R Thanks for your reply Will! We did an MRI to see what could be causing the issue but the report came up clean, no edema was present either. He prescribed an L5 epidural which helped a bit with the burning in the toes. Most of the pain happens when I lay on my back I can feel the pressure around the L5 area as it refers down to my foot. I eat pretty clean and have cut back from 2 glasses of wine almost every night to just 2 nights/week. That I know will cause inflammation. Well today is exactly 7 months and I see the pain management dr. to see what else it could possibly be. Did you deal with atrophy and severe weakness in the legs? I feel like I'm still building leg strength and balance, also fatiguing easily when walking. Thanks again!!!

Mark Schoonover it sounds like they are being thorough which is good. I dealt with weakness before my fusion, but started building back strength after. I hope pain management helps. I know dozens that it was 10-13 months before they truly felt relief. Our bodies heal differently. Laying flat was always my go to though. Keep us posted

Tell me what your primary pain source was prior to surgery? Leg and or back? How high up your back did the pain travel prior to surgery? Post surgery I've heard stories where you wake up after surgery and the leg pain is gone or the back pain is gone.

@@WilliamPort-HN2R thanks for responding! Not gonna sugar coat it….the recovery has been brutal! Surgery lasted 8 hours, 45 minutes. No complications during surgery. Great medical team for sure. Still on Oxycodone and Methocarbamol twice a day for pain/spasms. The surgery was definitely successful and that it took away all of the pinched nerves/sciatica. During my surgery they actually inserted a 25 mm carbon fiber prosthetic disc spacer. I have my six week follow up on Thursday with my surgeon. They will take x-rays and compare them to those they took the day after my surgery as comparison. So we shall see.

@@BBQROCKSTAR178 I hope the follow-up goes great. I’m saying this in love, my follow-up was a bit anti-climatic. They did the X-rays, came in, the doc showed me the X-rays- I focused on the hardware- he said “everything looks good, you are doing just fine. Any questions?” I asked a couple to which he said “that’s normal, listen to my body. No BLT for another 4 weeks and see me at my next appointment.” He was right, and I’m doing great but it was quite anticlimactic for me.

Hi, I had fusion surgery two years ago L-3 through L-5. The left side turned out pretty good, but the right side is hell for me. There is something horribly wrong with it. Also, the surgeon cut through my muscles and really made them act weird--like Charlie Horses in and around my spine 24-7. It has affected my balance and equilibrium. I am getting an updated MRI and CAT Scan and am looking for a surgeon for revision surgery. I feel so devastated and feel that I have ruined my life by having this surgery two years ago. I don't know what to do anymore. I am looking at a surgeon in Los Angeles--If anyone knows of a surgeon who could help me, please let me know. I had this one done by Seattle Neuro and Swedish Hospital. I thought I was making a good choice, but it didn't turn out that way. I just wish I could find the right kind of help. Thank you.

I’m not everyone and I didn’t really touch anything but light weights for a year. After about 7 months post op I got really good at body weight. About 13-15 months out I started weights again. If you heal properly then there are zero limitations.
