Mic Spin (make link) and Amp Spin (make link) are two kinetic sound-sculptures-as-instruments from a series called The Instrument Project (make link). I use these machines to mix sound kinetically, spatially. For Le Mois Multi 2017 (mmrectoverso.or..., Avatar’s sound studio (www.avatarquebe...) is used as a site to mechanically live-mix field recordings played through both high and low-fi speakers - from studio monitors to mobile phone speakers placed in resonant drinking glasses.
The field recordings were originally made in 2003 for the sound work Recording Machines (make link). For Spincycle I worked with field recordings from three sites. Each site makes up one of the three parts to the Spincycle sound: a ceramicist who sings while throwing a pot on a potter’s wheel, two women working on dry cleaner steam presses and nine women working in a belt and tie manufacturing company on machines ranging from a small stamp machine to a large steam press and a variety of sewing machines.
