I am greek, brother. I know my family history from 1503 when my ancestor sailed to Constantinople. And I know where my ancestors lived for 2,500 years before that. But knowing all the Greek dances, songs and traditions, I have never felt such awe in my soul. Now I feel that even if ancient peoples like the Greeks and Jews dissolve in globalisation, Wales will remain. And it makes me feel so good to empathise with them and feel my pain with them in this song.

I think he's crying because when this song was written, there was a real danger that the Welsh language would die out. 40 years later, he chose to close his mouth and lift his microphone to the crowd, in Cardiff of all places, and hear them sing his words back to him: yr iaith Gymraeg yn fyw. The Welsh language lives on. Although the battle is not yet won, as an old man he can look back on his life and say he played his part.

I'm Welsh, and I'll try and explain why this is so special and why Dafydd Iwan is crying. If you watch the Copa90 video- The Welsh Football Revolution, it explains more about the rise in national pride and football and the Welsh language, and why it's so surprising. Two things caused the decline in the Welsh language- mass migration from England during the industrial revolution and a efforts by the government to stamp it out- which led to a like 'internalised hatred' from Welsh people towards their own language. And also laws that banned if from being spoken in workplace, court etc. The language loss caused a split in Wales and Welsh was only really spoken in the North West and West coast. And it became synonymous with nationalism- which was really hated in Wales. The south was more unionist. Dafydd Iwan is a Welsh nationalist folk singer, probably the most 'uncool' thing you could be in Wales. In football, like the Copa90 video shows, the Welsh language was really looked down on in Cardiff and the south. Many people in the south hated North Wales Welsh speakers as much as the English. When I was young, there was no pride in the language at all and was seen as backwards and embarrassing. People would have mocked you for liking Dafydd Iwan. So to see football fans from across Wales (10-20 years ago would have had nothing in common, and maybe would have hated and fighting each other) sing a Welsh nationalist folk song, is nothing short of a miracle. And it's prompted Welsh people to want to learn Welsh so they can sing along in Welsh. There is still a sort of trauma in Wales, particularly in the older generation from the Welsh language loss, and an internalised shame over speaking it. So to see the younger generation embrace their language is beautiful! I And 'rugby Welshness' is still very unionist, with the Royals and all that. The nationalism that has spawned from football is new, organic and forward thinking. The football team has been pushing for it to be called 'Cymru' rather than 'Wales'. And it's helped the movement in Wales to 'un-Anglicise' ourselves. I.e changing place names back to the original Welsh names. Un-Anglcise our surnames (the reason why so many Jones, Williams, Davies in Wales is because England changed our surnames from the original Welsh names Dafydd= Davies etc) This is why he's crying. It's a mix of disbelief, and also pride to see Wales finally embrace the language, without any negative connotations or embarrassment. And it's united the north and south. Hope that makes sense.
@christinequinn53558 ай бұрын
@@paperflowers-ks6vv Thank you. That is a great explanation. As an Irishwoman who loves our own native language, Gaeilge, I also love healthy, life affirming Welsh and Scottish nationalism. According to most modern science, our ancestral DNA, culture and language ARE embedded in our bodies. Of course, I also love football and have watched this spine tingling rendition by Dafydd and the Welsh football fans, DOZENS of times. Slainte.
@paperflowers-ks6vv8 ай бұрын
@@christinequinn5355 Oh thanks! I know it's a bit of an essay, but I wanted to provide some context for the crying. I think a lot of us in Wales have been very surprised by the effect the Cymru football team has had on the Welsh psyche! It's probably a sense of vindication too- he went to jail for his Welsh language protests. People like him were seen as 'crackpots' in the past. Now nationalism is taken a lot more seriously by the younger generation. To see younger people embrace the song (he's in his 80s!) and sing in Welsh- many of them can't speak Welsh and singing phonetically, is probably something he never thought he would see.

@@ynyrglyn5037 Statistics show that despite census numbers showing more 'speakers' of Welsh, the Welsh speaking heartlands are still shrinking and becoming anglicised, partly due to inmigration of monolingual English speaking settlers, emigration from the areas, housing issues, etc. Furthermore, studies show that the second language learners of Welsh, those from English speaking families sent to Welsh speaking schools, tend not to use Welsh as much after leaving school, socialise in English, have English speaking partners and raise their children as English speakers. Stop patting yourselves on the back over meaningless census results and start doing something to protect the density of your native speaking population from anglicisation, or you'll end up like Ireland today (Ireland in 1919, like Wales in 1970, had 20% of it's population as native Irish speakers and attempted a school-based revival in the English speaking part. They ended up with zero new Irish speaking areas despite 55% of their schools having been Irish Medium in the 1940s and now less than 1% of their population are native Irish speakers). Don't think that Welsh Medium schools can do all the work, they can't. You need your native speakers and the geographic Welsh speaking areas. Otherwise you'll end up with a pathetically English sounding Welsh creole, with English tongues butchering Welsh words and very little thought given to decent phonetic instruction in the rush to create more 'speakers'. In Ireland even most teachers don't know the languages phonetics. It's a shitshow.

It's beautiful to see a language threatened to extinction being revived and use this way by such an amazing Celtic country. As a half-basque (and proud Spaniard) myself, I hope this regional languages with such a long history survive, and I hope to do my part by learning my own regional language one day. Congratulations, Wales!

Please call the country by its proper name: Cymru. ‘Wales’ is an occupation Saxon English word meaning ‘Foreigner.’ The Cymry were and are the native population of the island of Britain and are the true Britons.

Unbelievable. The Welsh language is so beautiful and never better when sung by a full stadium.

Cardiff City Stadium let a genie out the bottle when they decided to just play the first few bars of the Anthem and just let the crowds emotion carry the song. My Polish mate was at the Wales Hungary game and said he had tears rolling down his cheeks. Dafydd Iwan will die a happy man after this.. So many non-Welsh speakers proudly blasting out Welsh songs. Yma o hyd - you'd better believe it 🏴

It's phoney af. Most people in Wales think Welsh is a pointless language. Personally I'm very keen Welsh speaker but I'm def in the minority unfortunately.
@west_wind_552 жыл бұрын
@@tombartram7384 Survey after survey say otherwise, fortunately. It's a minority across the whole of the country that holds such views in the 21st century.

I was lucky enough to be there that night and witness this amazing performance from Dafydd and the Welsh crowd. I feel very proud to be Welsh but also a bit down that I was brought up through the English education system in Cardiff back in the 80s and 90s. I feel like I have missed out on my heritage. Unfortunately there are still a lot of schools in Cardiff that teaches very little Welsh. We are the capital of Wales and yet so many youngsters are not given the right to their history or language. I know its changing slowly, but the Welsh government need to do more in my opinion. Well done to all those keeping this amazing language alive. I am learning and hope to join my fellow Welsh in full conversation soon!

i did Welsh to Standard 12 (year 2 in secondary) but after that you could drop it in favour of another language and i unfortunately did that. Regretted it afterwards but at time it seemed a bit boring - how stupid was i!
