I used to solo sail my Nacra 6.0 with a mast head spinnaker and main sail with no reefing points with both clues on the same side. It worked perfectly with both sails up at the same time. Asymmetrics are less suited to sailing directly downwind than spinnakers, and so instead the boat will often sail a zig-zag course downwind, gybing at the corners. An asymmetric spinnaker is particularly effective on fast planing dinghies and small racing catamarans with dagger boards up as their speed generates an apparent wind on the bow allowing them to sail more directly downwind but not straight downwind like a spinnaker. I hope this helps but you probably already know this.

Thats the way to learn first thing is put a preventer on the boom of the mainsail stops accidental jib and also it will be good to fly the kit with a boom extension from a fix point or mast. Great channel mate.

You can get the spinnaker out of the wind shadow a bit by moving the tack of the spinnaker to the bow of the windward hull. Don’t drop the main: then you have nothing to get the spinnaker to collapse behind if your sock malfunctions... guessing you may have found this out given the grim sounding foreshadowing.

Tried moving it about half way to the windward hull. You'll see some of that in following footage... It still wasn't happy... I did end up dropping the main, because with the light winds the batterns were constantly slapping on the shrouds... But... We nearly come agutsa!

Watching your efforts of trying to sail your spinnaker down wind.....gave you considered a Kite? They fly high and in better winds and free of deck conditions. Not your common sail but very useful on a cat.

First put a preventer on the main then sail a little by the lee, that'll keep the kite filled...same as wing and wing...Always be conscious of the accidental jibe! Did I say put a preventer on the main?
@SailingLifeonJupiter4 жыл бұрын
Tks for watching Wes.. Yep preventer on the main, otherwise it would been a more spectacular gybe... the main still backwinded tho and we ended up sailing backwards which is how we ended up beam on the wind and the sock out of control...all a bit hard short crewed. Ultimately the asymmetric spinny didn't want anything other than dead downwind in this goosewing config, which the autopilot was unable to sustain.... It was far happier when we dropped the main altogether, which we did for weeks on end... but that got us into strife as you'll soon see!

@liquidmandotcom2 жыл бұрын
@@SailingLifeonJupiter Yeah I kinda noticed that. Let's be just a little unconventional here for a moment, if you had a 14' pole that tracked down the main mast -- maybe even longer as your boat is HELLA STURDY. You would then have a point six to eight feet out over the water. You could tie it off on that ring-cleat at the bow and I think there's a cleat available in the stern as well. This should give you another 3-5 degrees of wind input angle. You should set this up for the Panama Canal - Fiji run that I'm sure you are planning - I think that's a downhill run the whole way. Anyway throw it by Mumby, I'm sure he'll love the idea... BTW - - I'm cruising through the videos, I'm really enjoying them. You just dropped the iphone . . .
