We used a fisherman’s knot or double fisherman’s knot with the eye of the clew in the centre, that way you have a knot that doesn’t pull apart and doesn’t tighten on the material to the side of the eye damaging the strengthening patch. Yes it’s heavier than the dyneema soft shackle but I’d always worry about the soft shackle opening when the load drops

Integrated soft shackle spliced on to the sheet, on an RS700

Used the cow hitch method on the rs800 tied in the boat with two sliding thumb knots. Quick to untie that way. The Musto skiff has tapered sheets and a thumb knot on each end looped over itself once through the spinnaker clew. Kept weight and snags down.

Simple cow-hitch is the best of the knotted methods. If i have time i'll taper some sheets and add a soft shackle or luggage tag. Just a bit lighter, easier to undo (if left on for some time) and no chance of slipping... plus I like doing rope work! :)

Mozzy Sails I like the idea of rope work, I enjoy the finished product, not sure I enjoy doing it though.

Hi Mozzy, once again another incredibly fascinating video! You say the tapered section varies from boat to boat, how long would you recommend the tapered sections be on an RS200s kite?

I seem to recall the tapers being about a meter, but they're down the club on my boat so I can't measure. I will try and remember and come back to you

The problem with soft shackles is that the fine threads start to fray. They are good if your not undoing them everyday. But if your taking them apart twice daily then the shackle becomes very hard to undo as releasing the tension is difficult because of the frayed threads.

What are the lengths on your 200 sheets?

8.3 m on our 200 kite sheet. Seems good even in the breeze!

This is a rooster taperlite variation. Taperlite is nicer initially (it's stiff, so easy to grab), but it's expensive and wears quick. We also have used Marlow R8 now. We're yet to see how quickly the R8 wear though!

@@MozzySails I bought the rs tapered one and it was first of all massive like 5 metres too big to I had to cut and then re taper, and the dyneema just seems to go really fuzzy even though it isn’t running through any blocks. So I think I’m going to buy some D cup and taper that

@@MozzySailsisn’t R8 about twice the price of taperlite?

@@jamins827 taper was £3.95 per meter . R8 used to be a about £4.20, but think prices have gone up to around £5.90 now. However, I think the R8 lasts about twice as long.

i dont understand.. why not just do an eye-splice with a thimble... This way that spinnaker is one with the sheet.

Is there a reason why you can’t use the RS supplied sheets, reduce the length of the dyneema and thus the slop, splice an eye into it and either cow-hitch or softshackle?

None at all. But then you don't get the benefit of tapered (light) sheets.
