This sixth video is all about defining affection and affects in Spinoza's philosophy. Joy and Sadness are also introduced as the fundamental affects.

Love your videos. Only just discovered them. A well-known and well-loved rabbi argued with me that Spinoza was a pantheist and now I know how to argue back. The first cause that creates itself. Wonderful.

I am an adult student of Philosophy and I am finding your videos very very helpful in studying for exams. You are filling me in, in all the pieces of information that I may not get a chance to ask my lecturer about in between lectures or that he may not have the time to go over. And I am sure that I am speaking for many other students of Philosophy both you and mature students who are in the same position as myself. Great Work and well done. The hours you put in to making these videos are certainly worth it. Annmarie

Meaning is the desire for the world to be other than it is, even if that means increasing the predictive certainty that other charges won't occur. There are two primary motivations, avoid and approach, in that order of salience. The purpose of all knowledge, wisdom, and understanding is actionable certainty.

Any plans to continue this series? It's been very helpful, both academically and otherwise. I found I've written about 6 times more about Spinoza than I had to in the past few hours, simply for my own records and considerations.

I really want to know how its not just about following one's desire and what we should do instead? how is it so complicated? :( So far this helped me out so much, but I'm dying to know the rest. I mean I can do the research but you really put it out all so nice and coherent!

Great videos, but you need a compressor mic / or a compressor preset on your voice, or simply increase the volume. It's falling very flat, and the volume is below normalized. Compressors will kick in any lows, and lower any highs so you get a crisp, leveled out body to your voice. It'll make listening to this a lot more complete. That aside really great videos.

Why in the world (lol) did you think (lol) you stopped at 6, despite your declared intention to continue regarding what, in Spinoza's thinking, complicates simply following desire - so clearly you've stopped in the middle?! Hope that you haven't met w/ untoward accident! (1/2 joke) Actually, from the point of view of the tradition Spinoza thought he thought his way out of it would make perfect sense a study of him wouldn't reach 7, the number of completeness, but at any rate, THANK YOU FOR THE LUCIDITY, AND I DO HOPE YOU CAN AND WILL PICK IT UP. His view of materiality being the real thing is tremendously interesting from the point of view of Kabbalah, in at least one stream of which, Chabad Hasidism, seeming substantiality (yeshut "self-ness") of the materiality is because of its immediate root in the Truly Substantial Beyond all Duality, which we still therefore intuit as existing, because we are it. Miles away, but a close neighbor lol
