Fun fact: the finger trap initially showed all ten fingers ripped off individually but it kept making the movie nc17, so they only shwoed around five on screen and used more sound effects for the rest. also the main special effects guy or the director kept the prop severed fingers and got pulled over by customs and had to explain why he had fake bloodied fingers on him.

I think the idea of Saw becoming an anthology series is ripe with potential. So many different ideas of what you could do. Since the idea of John was to build a following you could make each installment about different apprentices, cult members, or copycats. Each with different interpretations of his message and methodology. Maybe one is about a follower who targets certain types of offenders prefers the escape room style traps. Maybe one is about a small town and they get a new resident and come to find out important members of the town are a jigsaw cult pruning the unsavory (might get sued by Edgar Wright for that one). One could be more of a psychological thriller where a cult member is trying to groom a new convert out of a meek person abused by society by targeting people who have abused and taken advantage of them. So many ideas. They could have a legit franchise and never have to do another mainline entry

The reason, I believe, that most people are not fans of Spiral is specifically because it isn't Saw. Now that sounds reductive, but the film came with the expectation that it was a continuation of the Saw franchise, and those expectations weren't precisely met. It had much of the aesthetic without the same themes, similar traps without the chance of success. So when people's expectations aren't met or surpassed, they're left disappointed and sometimes angry. They aren't going to return to second guess themselves, so it'll just be logged away in their mind as 'a bad movie'.

Because truth be told from the outside thats what people would have seen. Especially if you see what his apprentices got up to. Many of those traps were no win situations. "Bad" people getting punished. John didnt really spread his message or reasoning to anyone other than the disciples. I can see how people dislike this but its nowhere near as bad as its made out to be. Enjoyed it for many of the same reasons you did. I saw it mentioned already but turning it into an Anthology with different interpretations would actually be a great way to take the series. Though I disagree in the voice. It was like "yup, it's him then..." The story had promise, but didn't realize its potential. Also the new voice was awful. Completely ruins the tone they were trying to set. Particularly when you read the title - book of saw, most books have a beginning, a middle and an end. This is the first which shows a fake jigsaw, if they make the 2nd, I wouldnt be surprised if we see a return of either Hoffman or Logan as the real jigsaw or both....and then the last one will ChrisR getting revenge on the fake jigsaw, and then getting taken down by by either Hoffman or Logan.

Just finished watching Spiral yesterday and had to watch this review. Big fan of the franchise, and i really liked this movie. The points that are being made about the differences between the movies is accurate. This isnt Jogsaw, and as Decker pointed out, it would be crazy to think that Jigsaw planned all of this to happen. The whole concept of the traps is twisted on itself. Where as Jigsaw saw it as a means of rehabilitation. This killer was just using it for killing. The means by which he chose to kill paired well with each victim. And the final kill, it thought was almost telegraphing a trademark that he could use if there are any.ore movies. The movie was good as it was and to compare it to the other saw movies is fair but abit rushed. Maybe if thry make more with this killer and they connect, there could be a better comparison.
