Not an idiot Florida! That was a very good explanation of a spiral/acid wrap, one of the best. Gary Loomis gave a very good explanation of it also. I will be doin the same. Thumbs up and great vid! Richard from Kansas;)

As a rod builder my only disagreement is less eyes is better. Up here in northern Michigan I've seen countless times on steelhead rods.......the more eye the more sensitivity. Great video man. Very informative and helpfull

I just went over to a rod builders house in Breezy Pt, Mn today. He teaches classes and is a great guy. I needed a couple parts. He’s a Batson rep. I asked if he could critique my first couple builds. He said I screwed up the spine. I thought I had it right. He then told me about a cat fisherman named Roberts who developed the spiral wrap as in your video. He showed a couple rods he built with this guide pattern. Craziest thing I’ve ever seen. Might try it. Fun to see his shop.

Where is the spine in correlation to the the end of the rod I guess what I'm trying to ask is do you use the spine like regular casting or do you do it like a spinning rod use the spline on the inside at the end of the pole or do you use the spine on the outside and at the end of the pole?

Hi, do you need to use a larger guide eye opening for first 2 guides. I am building a 7 foot med heavy casting rod and want to spiral wrap. Thanks
@fdxcustomrods Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't start with less than an 8. You will likely have to use 4 guides in your spital to keep the line from touching the blank.

@@fdxcustomrods Funny thing happened. I had the guides in place for casting guides in top held in place with bands and tip top glued. I started to load it up with line through all guides and tip top. The guides closest to the top of blank with a load on rolled over to the bottom. Will be doing spiral wrap for sure after seeing that. Thanks for the videos.

In the chaos part 2 video coming soon, I spiraled a big boy blank, starting with and 8, and it required a stripper and two transition guides.

A question about the layout and guides. Would you use single foot microwave air guides on a heavy rod like this with being spiral wrapped. I know there’s a few ways of securing the guides just wondering if theyed hold up? Last was wondering how many guides you ended up with.
@fdxcustomrods Жыл бұрын
First, I don't belive that Microwave casting guides give you much advantage on a spiral wrapped rod, but they don't detract either. Guide number and placement will be determined in a static load test. See my video on guide placement and testing I did a month ago.

should u do this on all rods or just flipping rods?? like crankbait rods or moving baits ??

I use a spiral wrap on almost every rod I build.
@aaronwilde10 ай бұрын
I fish bait casters almost exclusively and have bought and built many now, and all have been built traditionally with guides UP. I have never broken a tip once, even using light gear on larger fish. I truly believe that tip breaks are almost always due to abuse of the relatively more delicate and thin top section. I even think many situations where I broke my rod in the thicker lower sections have been to my weight bouncing into the blank while I have the hook in the keeper and bush whack. Although some blanks seem to take that abuse. I did try to make a spiral wrap once but I did the version where there is only one transitional guide and I didn't like it. Maybe the two transitional guide version would be better for long medium action Salmon/Steelhead float fishing rods. I'm about to test guide placement on a 9 foot rod and will mess around some more. I build 4 piece fly blanks into bait casters so I can pack them easily, and I find the ferrules come crooked after fishing a lot. I wonder if that could be eliminated by spiral wrapping and thus having no rotational torque... hmmm. I also never really spine the rod as from my research the blanks are tested in all directions and I like to build on the straightest line instead, but maybe your point about spinning it evenly for rotational torque could come into play there too.. Cheers

Hi! I like video! Why didn't you use 4 spiral guides with the first 0° 45° 135° 180° rotation? 0° 90° 90° 180° is better?
@fdxcustomrods Жыл бұрын
It depends on the diameter of the blank and the height of the guides. You can do it any way you want and does not appear to effect the performance. I just keep it as simple as possible.

I would recommend this technique for any casting rod. Actually, the heavier the rod rod, the more effective it can be.
@kelvinmodeste7549 Жыл бұрын
Can you effectively use a spinning reel on that rod?
@fdxcustomrods Жыл бұрын
No. It is strictly a bait caster rod that has the benefit of no rotational torque on the blank.

To be optimal, and increase line efficiency, you need 1 more transition guide.
@fdxcustomrods5 ай бұрын
I've tested a lot of rods, and on some of the larger diameter rods, it takes 2 transition guides. But on most small diameter blanks, only 1 guide is necessary.
