The spirit animal exercise we covered in a previous lesson is a really useful tool for influencing your caricature design. It also can provide you with some additional inspiration for the direction of drawing your caricature. Now that a little time has passed, we’re going to look back at some of the student work that was submitted in the caricature facebook group. There was a variety of problems students had, but in this critique, we’ll focus on what you should focus on exaggerating from a spirit animal when drawing your caricature.

I had a colleague at a caricature convention draw me as a rectangle, with a little bit of hair and it looked just like me. No features were needed!

I'm gonna be honest here but I used to have zero interest on caricature but the way you explain and drawing things really give me inspiration to start studying this art. Thank you Mr. Jones 👍

This is a very interesting video! Thank you so much for the tips. I just started Caricature last year. It’s fun to do Caricature with a little twist from the artist’s mind and style! Love it! 🥰❤️🙏

Hey Proko, Jazza recently made a video trying realistic art, could you make a video critiquing his drawings? It would be nice to see what mistakes people make when transitioning from cartoon to realism.

Some people did not understand the essence of the technique. What they are doing is transposing animal forms to humans, when it should be exactly the opposite. And use it only as a reference, not a "mutation".

I'd really like a course on exegerating features, but in a more subtle way.

This student critique video is from a lesson about using animals or objects to inspire an extreme exaggeration. Please check out the earlier lessons. I don't teach one particular level of exaggeration. I just teach the concepts of caricature and you can apply them in your own way. Subtle or grotesque! It's up to you how you use the information.

Why did you choose to enlarge the upper lip? In the reference he had really thin lips which could have been used to enlarge the lower lip. Another thing I would have changed is the chin area and corners of the lip part. It's hard to explain what I mean. But it's this little bulges you can see at some people. It would be a little deviation from the original picture but it would serve two purposes: the character would look a bit older and it would look a bit like the corners of the dogs snout (mouth?). Oh and I would enlarge that piercing to give it an animal like quality, for example you can see those markings at a cows ear.

As I've said before, there are countless ways to caricature a person's likeness. No two people will come up with the same solution. That's the amazing thing about this form of art. I would enjoy seeing your interpretation!

Court Jones Of course! Now I feel like an ass for writing the above...But ideas just flow when I see another artists do his thing. Oh, and on the lips: I was just commenting on you exaggerating already present features in the picture (brows, eyes, nose, filttum, etc) while wondering on the decision for the lips.

Ah no. No worries! Caricature is very democratic. Everyone should get a say, and as long as the observations are well-thought out, are totally valid.

mr.proko i can draw anything accurately by seeing it,but i cant draw without reference ,i can but it sucks,what should i do?
@Gyork_
@Gyork_ 6 жыл бұрын
I hope this is of any help, There's a difference between copying and studying you should be doing studies when you draw from reference, actively learning with a goal in mind it could be anatomy perspective or whatever fundamental you want to learn. tackle this issues 1 by one, if you don't want to pay for tuition you have to be actively searching for advice online from other artists don't be afraid of asking, the theory is incredibly important as well There's that old saying"the eye only sees what the mind is prepared to comprehend" That has helped me a lot on my anatomy skills, before I didn't really understood the form of areas like shoulders and hips but after reading how the muscles connect and wrap around I was able to create a 3d map in my head and it's become easier to construct this areas and to read what's going on in the references I use. but the only way to really improve and learn is by repetition so you just gotta keep pushing and pushing, the best artists never stop learning that's how it is. gotta be hungry for knowledge.

Nice, can you show with pencil
@AirEnderman13
@AirEnderman13 6 жыл бұрын
You can do basically the same thing with a pencil if you have pencils with varying hardness of graphite. You can do the sketch with a 2H or something and move up to a 4B as you define your contour lines more.

I want to know about qualification of Arts of yours and career
@CourtJones
@CourtJones 6 жыл бұрын
Sure thing. I have a Bacherlor's Degree in Studio Art from the University of California, San Diego. I took 10 years of additional training at the privately run Watts Atelier of the Arts. For 8 of those years, I also taught classes at the Atelier. And I have worked as a freelance commercial illustrator and live caricature entertainer for over 20 years. However, as I have discovered, official credentials mean almost nothing in the world of art. The only thing that matters as an artist in the world is your portfolio. No one has ever asked to see my college degree. They just want to know what I can create for them. And as an art teacher, what matters, I think, is the quality of the courses and the students' reactions to them. Now that my Proko caricature course is almost complete, I can point to that with a bit of pride in that vast amount of work I recorded and published with a LOT of help from Stan and his team, if you don't mind me saying so. :)

Don't take it personally I just wanted to plan my career. And wanted to know about how much time it takes master
@CourtJones
@CourtJones 6 жыл бұрын
Nothing was taken personally. I was just answering your question. Perhaps my tone was misinterpreted. My point was that traditional credentials are not important in art. My hope is that other young artists don't worry too much about getting a degree from a university. It can be a waste of time and money.The most important thing is the art that you produce, and there are many non-traditional ways and schools for artists to get educated in regards to the practical skills of drawing and painting. As for the time it takes to master art, well, I would say not even one lifetime is enough for most people. "Master" is a tricky word. Don't fall into the trap of thinking you have to master something before you can work professionally, or you will never think you're good enough. Just get good enough to present some solid, clean, well-designed pieces of similar style in your portfolio and you will start to get work. Whether it is fine art, illustration or something else.
