What I think upsets me the most about the new spirit show and movie. Is that they take a movie, all about seeing the effects of colonization and western expansion onto not only the animals and environment, but to the native people, and turn it into a horse girl movie where the little girl from the big city tames a wild horse to be her best friend, like almost every single horse movie that’s already been made. They took something unique and nuanced, and turned it into a quick and easy cash cow for horse girl merchandise

Spirit was my sister’s favorite movie growing up, and it’s still pretty high up there for her. She skipped out on the Netflix show after she saw that it completely missed the point of the horses being free in the original, so I imagine she wouldn’t like this new movie either lol It’s nice to see someone talk about Spirit though. Definitely one of Dreamworks’ more underrated movies lol

Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is 1 of mine & my older sister's childhood favorites. Spirit was my introduction to Matt Damon & what got me into horses. The mustang who couldn't be broken has come a LONG way in 2 decades.

Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is also a childhood favorite of mine and I've never seen Spirit: Untamed or Spirit: Riding Free and have no interest in viewing them but clearly, they should NEVER have slapped Spirit's name in their titles. DreamWorks should have just made it a stand-alone series with nothing to do with Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. Taking the story of the wild Spirit Who Could Not Be Broken and turning it into some cliche story about little girls riding horses was a massive and foolish mistake on DreamWorks' part. Did they forget what the original 2002 film is even about?

BTW, Spirit, the horse is actually based off a live horse that they studied for months before hand to get his mannerisms and personality into the film as well as animating a realistic horse. He goes by the name Donner and is still alive at a wild horse sanctuary. He celebrates his 28th birthday in May. You're welcome for that little bit of info!
@IceTypeFennekin
@IceTypeFennekin Жыл бұрын
Well, he USED to go by Donner, but he has been renamed Spirit in honor of the film. And the "wild horse sanctuary" he lives at is Return to Freedom's HQ in California 😀 Anyways, God bless and have a great day and remember: Jesus loves you!!!

What really angers me about both the sequel and the Netflix show is that it took everything that made the original so freaking amazing, and smashed it to smithereens. One thing I always loved about Spirit (I grew up in love with horses and this was one of my favorite movies) is that its really not like any of the basic horse movies out there. It has quality characters, stunning animation that shows the commitment in the creators and how they came to really understand the movement of horses, and an original plot line. I swear, 98% of other horse movies is about a special girl taming a special wild horse that nobody else can tame. GIVE ME A BREAK. Its exhausting how feminist horse movies are, basically scrutinizing men. And if the horse is so untameable, how can a literal 13 year old girl who's from the city and hasn't been around a horse a day in her life tame it in freaking 5 seconds? Spirit did so amazing with the relationship between a horse and a man. There's conflict, then there's trust earned, and even more trust earned when Little Creek sets Spirit free. Spirit then understands that Little Creek isn't in it just for another pet. He respects the horse as a friend, and he understands that as a horse, he needs to be out where he belongs. It's genuinely such a beautiful message, and its infuriating that the sequels entirely disrespected it. And you can tell through the animation of the second movie, its just... it really is just a mess. In the original, each horse's movements flow so naturally and its so smooth and satisfying. In the sequel(s), its just... what are they doing?? Everything is so choppy and the horses don't even pin their ears back when they run. There's such little effort. That's why its so disrespectful to the original. The original was so carefully crafted, and that's why it was so incredibly amazing. This movie just threw in the ingredients for every other horse movie ever, stole a label and slapped it on, and then threw it out into the world.

It’s not that Spirit Untamed is a bad movie, from the looks of it the plot, characters, animation, it all looks decent, the only problem is it’s trying to take the brand of something that was nothing like this, and like you said at the end, they easily could’ve just changed the horse’s name and breed and literally the whole movie has better meaning to it, it’s sad that so little could’ve actually made the movie great..

Same, I actually watched a couple episodes of the tv show and still couldn’t keep watching. Spirit was one of my favorite movies growing up and I actually enjoyed the storytelling perspective where they didn’t make the horses actually talk, they acted like real horses. I understand this movie and the show isn’t meant for older fans of the original movie, but that doesn’t change how much of a tonal whiplash it had. Lucky literally has her own stable for Spirit, as in he’s her property. They “claim” Spirit does still live with his herd and goes back to them in the evenings, but the show still completely ignores the point of the movie. In the later episodes there’s even a plot of Lucky wanting to be a circus performer like her late mother who performed acrobatics with horses, and she uses Spirit to do so. I’m sorry but that is completely ignoring what made Spirit as a character. He learned to respect humans like the natives who actually respected and cared about their horses, but in the end he belonged in the wild with his herd. The fact Little Creek’s tribe isn’t even in the show is a pretty sour indication to what happened when that f*cking railroad got built anyway. We really couldn’t have a plot where Lucky and her friends befriended a native girl who learns to see not all the white people are ignorant and selfish? But anyways, this movie isn’t necessarily bad as a generic kids movie about horses, but I wish they didn’t forcibly try tying it to a beloved classic that honestly deserves more love. I enjoy other Dreamworks franchises like Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon and Shrek, but I still find Spirit heavily underrated

As the president of the Spirit fandom, self-elected but no one has run against me, the amount of love and affection I have for this movie will never be matched. To see how in 2002 the original movie was considered "too politically correct" even for the time, you'd see how the film was just doomed from the start. It was never able to be a success, let alone the masterpiece it deserved to be. It's a good thing HTTYD did a very similar concept a couple years later and got worldwide success for it! I love the HTTYD series, but the themes between Spirit and it are very similar on the surface. It's a shame to see how a film discussing colonization and the harm that white people had on the native population, epically as the Colonel is a veiled reference to Custer, was just erased from everyone's mind. This film will always be my favorite, as there's just no film like it.

Same with Pocahontas and Brother Bear imo. Pocahontas specifically was a movie I adored as a kid as was devastated when the sequel was “historically accurate” because of how much criticism and even out right hate the original movie got. I understand it definitely wasn’t a good idea, but I still enjoyed the movie for what it tried to teach and Colors of the Wind remains my favorite song to this day, and Pocahontas was always one of my favorite Disney Princesses because of how selfless but strong she really was. A lot of people LOVE ridiculing it as a massive insult to Native American culture and stuff, but proceed to ignore how racist Aladdin and other Disney movies with racist elements are, like Peter Pan and Lady and the Tramp. And with Brother Bear, I seriously don’t get why critics didn’t like it. Yeah the movie wasn’t perfect and isn’t even one of my favorites from the post renaissance era, but I still enjoyed the movie and actually really loved the animation with the bears and other animals. And yes, I still love Spirit and really wish it got more credit and recognition.
