Bloody fucking hell. That decision to switch to screaming during the high part at the end was one of the best things that has happened in music. Emotion over 9000.

The first time I saw this video, I was like wow, the screams during that section really give the song that extra heaviness, and was even more goose bump inducing.

it was brutal yes, but the highs add more intensity for me personally. It's the same with Jinjer's pisces, where tatiana does the "searching for a hook to catch on, and see their sun beam" with a high voice on the video but growls it live (the album has both overlayed onto each other, but i prefer only highs)
@DiStickStoffMono0xid

@@d00mnoodle i get what you're saying, it's probably personal preference. i really love this song, doesn't matter if this version or the album version. i don't even favour this version because its more brutal but rather because the screams just carry much more emotion for me.. but again, personal preference. i think i remember an interview with tatiana where she's saying she's screaming the high part live because she's afraid to mess it up and thus prefers to stay in her safe zone. i mean i get that, but i'd love her to do that high part in pisces live :D

@@pelicanine So for me it was on the one hand the fact that during a live take she gave the best of her brute, beautiful voice so flawlessly - on the other hand you can see that she totally feels the lyrics and the music, and that makes it for me again many times more intensively. Do you understand what I mean? Needless to say she's also beautiful lol so it's a win-win-win for me :) it's just a shame it's not on spotify!

Something I don't see mentioned as much as the incredible technical ability and development that Courtney has is her lyricism. One of my favourite writers on paper, let alone colouring those lyrics with the level of performance we get treated to in these videos.Theres such duality between vulnerability and furious, righteous, raw outward emotion. There's a slew of music out there that sits at one side of the pendulum or the other, but there's spectrums in single songs with this band. And theres moments to me where the most vulnerable lyrics are delivered with hair raising aggression, and lines that are sung softly that are more cutting than any drop or breakdown. Beautiful and incredibly skillful writing.
@boogaethje

I mean, I like this version better because of the change in the last chorus, but how exactly is this any more “live” than what you hear on the record? The record was probably taking from 3-5 takes done exactly the same as this (again, apart from arrangement changes), with her “getting into it” just as much. I understand this argument when it’s talking about full band live, musicians do react differently when they’re playing with other musicians vs just listening to playback. I’d also understand if it’s in the context of a full set, where the fact that they’ve sung many songs and will keep singing more changes the approach entirely (arguably making the vocals more human). But the main different between these studio “one takes” and a recording is that a recording usually comes from the best from a few of these takes, but apart from that I don’t see much of a different in the situation the musicians are put into.

I think she actually switches up the “they promise I will feel the pain” to “they promise I won’t feel the pain” in this version. Sounds like it to me at least?

From a technical perspective, I can see Courtney‘s technique and control improving from the earlier live and one-take live stuff. The studio stuff is always well produced, but stuff like this that is meant to be left unedited in terms of pitch…it’s hard to get a good single take. Courtney, I’m sure you hear praises all the time, but as someone who has a technical ear, I do wanna say you are getting better and better and I really felt that in this performance. Keep up the great work.

@@SpectrumSkate I mean, she formed Unicron with her brother at the age of 13 and they released an EP when she was 15 (!). Her vocals were already decent there, way better at Iwrestledabearonce and now she's one of the best in the game. Absolutely insane performance here, especially in the end.

I've been listening music for 50 years now and this is definitely of the very best vocal performances I've ever heard. Magnificent.

I've been a fan of Spiritbox since 2019, and I'm so happy that they're finally getting the recognition they deserve. The entire band is extremely talented, and Courtney just keeps improving vocally. So excited to see what else they have planned for the future. (:

The fact that there is literally not a thing wrong with it and that it is even arguably better than the recording AND it's one take is insanity. the talent and dedication to achive this level is amazing

No, its healthy when the scream goes together with the pitch if you know what i mean. Its nots just screaming its singing with distortion basically)

@@gregtheflyingwhale Yeah, I get that. I've been screaming for about 15 years but it was just something I presumed on the album but I stand corrected. Whether it's singing, screaming, everything has a note. Courtney just had a really nice blend of the two in one single performance 👏🏼 Makes me think of the opening scream to Killswitch Engage's "My Curse". Loving it.
