I've only ever bought the finished product, so I'd never seen the process until I blundered across your video -- absolutely AWESOME!!! I'm not going to attempt silversmithing at my age, but I've acquired an incredible appreciation for your skills! And from now on, I'll be able to comprehend what I'm seeing when I examine the finished ring. Thank you so much! 😺💕🐾

Though I would never silversmith, I am fascinated at the art. The whole process is mesmerizing and the product itself is therefore worth more than 100$. I can't believe people sell for 20 and 30$ sometimes. I'm happy I watched this video. And the ring is beautiful.

I haven't worked on metalsmithing in years. I forgot how to do everything. I still have my tools and want to get back into it. What is in the spray bottle again? Spray flux? I don't remember that they had this type of flux. I think mine was like a paste. This video was great. You do such beautiful work and make it look so easy. I remember melting bezels before. Lol

This is such a fantastic video! I really appreciate you linking all your tools as well. It’s been incredibly helpful for me as I start my metalsmithing journey :) I do have a question though. I was wondering what you used to cut the 6 GA wire for the ring band? I love those thicker ring bands as well and I definitely want to incorporate them into my pieces. I just bought a bunch of 6 GA copper wire to practice with, and I can’t for the life of me figure out how to cut it 😅 thanks so much for your help!

How would you price this? Seems like it could easily take a whole day, plus the materials. I guess people would pay a premium for handmade local jewelry, but $200-300 seems like a stretch.
@SpiritMountainSilver
@SpiritMountainSilver 2 жыл бұрын
Pricing can be a challenge. You obviously need to factor in material cost (silver + stone) and the labor put in to the piece. But you also need to account for overhead costs associated with running your business. It definitely takes some figuring out, and I can say for myself I sold a lot of jewelry at a loss when I was starting out.

This is my fave video so far! You’re a great teacher. Can I ask… do you pickle your silver as you go like after every application of heat/solder joint? For example is it necessary to pickle after each step? Also how long on average do you leave the pieces in the pickle? Thank you 😊
@SpiritMountainSilver
@SpiritMountainSilver 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! And yes, what I like to do is first quench the piece in a bowl of water after each soldering operation or let it slowly cool down on it's own. Then I will throw it in the pickle pot! I usually leave my pieces in the pickle pot until they are a nice clean, white color all over :)

Ok, so I purchased extra soft solder. Melt PT - 1140 flow PT 1205. I thought that because it was extra soft that it would follow easier. But, my ring bezel melted before my solder did. What did I do wrong?

Your seam or the solder could have been dirty. If it doesn’t flow when it is suppose to I will throw the piece in my pickle pot then reheat it and try again. That happens sometimes unfortunately but keep practicing!

So I’m confused how the extra easy solder under your maker stamp doesn’t flow when you use the medium solder on your ring shank? I’m trying to understand how to use all the right levels of solder flow with embellishments and a shank. Thank you!! 😊❤️

Mostly heat control. I don’t focus the flame on the stamp section directly but rather near the ring band where I want the medium solder to flow. Since the stamp is flat it’s not super necessary to use any stronger solder and if the extra easy solder was to reflow the join wouldn’t be affected since the stamp is just a flat piece of metal. I could solder the stamp on last but I like to do it before the ring band Bc it’s helps me place the ring band exactly where I want it. If the ring band was soldered on first and I had it placed too high up on the back plate there might not be enough room for the stamp to sit. ☺️

What grit sandpaper did you use to sand down the bezel to make it flat?

Hello, A very helpful and clear video. May I ask how you remove excess solder which had flown onto the backplate when soldering the ring shank? I have only made a couple of rings so far and can’t quite get rid of them. They spoil the look of the ring from behind. Many thanks

Hey there! I like to use a mixture of silicone polishing wheels (black grit) and the yellow and white 3m radial discs to remove excess solder! 😃

@@SpiritMountainSilver Thank you so much for this. I have gone ahead and purchased the black wheel and yellow disc. Sourcing the white radial disc is a bit more difficult in the UK. For the time being will sand it with hand. Please if you could consider doing a video showing how to clean up inside the bezel before setting the stone if there is unmelted solder in lumps and the behind of a ring. Most videos on KZbin show this on sample areas and not on actual jewellery. Thanks once again!

You did great Leanne…. And your you tube has really grown. You probably don’t recognize my username on KZbin but this is AUMi Jewels…. I’m still teach my silversmith classes, but I’m also starting KZbin channel on MetalClay silver… you know I feel so bad because I judge people with metal clay silver jewelry I thought oh there are just cheating. But let me tell you it’s a lot of work. Cool Tools has sponsored me and I really now appreciate those Metal Clay designers. It’s a lot more tedious work. But being a Silversmith designer myself and you know this just as well as me that the back has to look just as pretty as the front… I already started a different Instagram page that’s only dedicated to Metal Clay Silver work. And I’ve got to work on my Silver Smith Instagram page I am so behind. You know one of the things that I like with you teaching on KZbin is your voice is very soothing and I agree with you 100% Silversmithing and Metal Clay Silver is very therapeutic for me as well.. well you keep doing an awesome job I am so proud of you…🔥🔥🔥🤗👏👏👏👏👏
