Beautiful job- I love it when a person shows you what can happen in real life- like mislaying their tools or running out of things - in your case the hardener. It makes me feel like I'm not alone when it happens to me. Handmade pieces of art are far more precious to me than something coming off of lathe- as you put your heart and soul into each piece and a bit of it stays in the work long after you're gone.

Back in the early 70's I was assigned to Taipei AS in Taiwan. While there I got interested in lapidary and silver work. I always wished I brought the torch we used back with me. Unlike the torch in this video, it gave a very gentle, but hot, flame. It was a canister with a foot bellows and a light weight torch that gave a very soft flame. The system used Naphtha as fuel. All tubing was just run of the mill plastic tubing like you would use on a fish tank. You never had to worry about moving the solder with the flame or burning the piece. Cheap and worked like a charm. Do wish I had brought it back.

So interesting! Many technical details like accurate measuring, not stretching out the thinner wire strips, using Easy Solder which has a lower melting point than the first solder, multiple quenching to preserve metal crystal structure, multiple pickling to remove firescale for better solder adhesion, wow! This is what master craftsmanship is all about. Very grateful for your knowledge sharing and I admire your expertise with jewelry making. It looks like alchemy to me. I love jewelry so much. Miniature pieces of art and bringing together so many skills in the jeweler - knowledge of how various metals will behave with fire, hammer, chemicals, stone knowledge, tool knowledge, understanding of hazards with fire and chemicals, and more. What a fascinating universe of learning. That is one beautiful ring!!

Beautiful little job. This is the first time I've watched someone make a ring. When I was a younger man I had the opportunity to work with a Navajo silver smith and master craftsman. I wish I would have taken him up on his offer to become his apprentice, but I was young and dumb and more interested in exploring the country at the time. Now that I'm older and slightly wiser, I wish I would have taken him up on his offer. The Navajo man's work was amazing, and if I had apprenticed under him, I'd probably be an expert by now.

Thanks for the hints! I've made a couple of rings with stone inlays from the Washington area: some Black jade and some listwanite. Didn't use the piecemeal method, instead used inner band as a template for a slab of stone, cut the slab in half, ground out a semicircle in each half - while checking for fit, then assembled the outer rings on the inner band, filled in blemishes with extra easy solder, epoxied the halves onto the assembled ring, then used the lapidary trim saw to cut away the ring from the stone. Finished the final dimensions of the stone and polished all on a Diamond Pacific Genie cabbing machine. Thanks again for the video, I found it very easy to follow!

A little tip that you could use if you wish is when sanding your edges like you did here, make figure eights and rotate piece 1/4 turn frequently while making these figure eights. This was how I would lap seal faces that were used in hydraulic pumps. Creates a flat surface.

When we made rings like this we never bothered with a calculator for sizing. We used string and then added some extra length that we cut off once we curbed and cut it. We also soldered the two wires onto the flat piece while it was flat. We curved it, cut it and then solder the whole thing altogether at one time.

amazing...wow....I did a silversmithing Course years ago then did an arts degree and majored in silversmithing and loved it ...but had no work upon completion and ended up doing a graphic design course and that got me into working in that industry and I always drew at home and often wanted to do some silversmithing but now as covid has changed many of us and our careers I find that I want to set up a work area at my family home, my dad has many machines as he was a welder and so there is a lot of stuff I can use or make use of. Your video has inspired me to get back into it and will certainly be using the this as one of my attempts to get my rings done ..I love working with silver was not a fan of gold,

Beautiful work! I don't have a lathe, but what works just as well for rings, is to adapt a tapered mandrill to fit the chuck of a drill-press and you have an instant vertical lathe!
@GomeowCreations

Thank you and yes you can use a mandrill with a drill or drill press but a lot of people done have that either.
