I am still unsure! I 100000% see what you mean, but at the same time the simple, clear and linear, logic design of these ones just massages some nice spots on my brain. Hopefully in the future they will release new ones more stylish but leave a option in to maintain the ones there now
@John-cq9ew
@John-cq9ew 3 жыл бұрын
To me the icons themselves feel fine but I take issue in the UI design itself, as in older games when an army was selected you could see the HP of individual units as well as the total amount of units in the army. I do agree that it is nice to be able to tell at a glance how many units of different types you have in the selected group but I would still prefer to be able to see their individual HP. I know you see their HP by looking at the bar ontop of the physical unit but it takes way longer to select the units that way.

agreed. The UI is my least favorite part. It's just a little to sleek and modern to me, feels more like controlling an empire through a simulator than through an office or command post. I hope we'll see some solid options for UI mods etc. I understand why some people prefer the new style, but it'd be really nice to have options.

Another note about "setting buildings on fire:" unless they changed something from the open stress test, buildings on fire will actually continuously take damage until they're repaired from their burning state. You can set a building on fire by getting it's hp low enough then walk away and let mother nature take care of it for you. It's slow as all get out, but if you, or your opponent, take some damage on your buildings and fail to repair it from burning, you could be in some trouble later as your buildings seem to collapse from nothing.

A great follow-up tip, after you've played around a bit with the info in this video, is to then learn a single build and practice it. That's probably the most common, and crucial, bit of advice I see given to AoE2 players who are either new or wanting to improve their skill. Don't be super picky about which build as, once you've gotten good at it, it'll be much easier to pick up further builds to add to your repertoire.

To be honest I feel the light unit iis actually reclassification of 'trash' units, with some rebalance. Basically Aoe 4 archers actually fulfil the roles of the skirmisher (basically they counter spearmen and heavier archers). Scout lines are weaker and more specialized against archers (so they aren't as effective as general raiding unit and are weaker in melee)
@cybersteel8
@cybersteel8 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think the Scout unit in AOE4 is good against anything military. The Horseman unit has a specific bonus against Light Ranged units, making them very good at taking out archers, crossbowmen, cavalry archers and handcannoneers.

Sort of. AOE4 Archers attack faster and have longer range than crossbows to the point they pretty much deal the same dps if hitting a target neither gets a bonus against. Compare that to AOE2 skirmishers who basically only do 1 damage to anything they don't counter. AOE4 Archers also lack the armor skirmishers have.

@@user-kx6wl8hz8v Having played the technical stress test I think AoE4 will be successful in the short term and in casual play at least as it feels really nice to play (Not having building hotkeys, set aside... Bit bummed about that). But in terms of professional play I am a bit unsure, as the game did stick pretty close to what the older games in the franchise do but still experiments quite a bit with new mechanics like more varied civs and walkable walls etc... Also the game balance felt a bit lob sided in the technical stress test and I feel like certains civs overperform by quite a margin but this be fixed by just tweaking the numbers a bit. Also one thing I have to mention having played both AoE2 and AoE4 (Not a AoE3 player) is that AoE4 feels "slower" but faster at the same time. A lot of the functions like gather rate have been increased and units feel like they walk a tiny bit slower than before, this might be because the game now runs at real time and not sped up by a factor of 1,7 as AoE2 does. AoE4 has more in-depth economy as well, no longer will you just be like "I want to make x amount of [Insert unit here] so I need x amount of villagers collecting this resource" as there are now more ways than one to get resources (civ dependent) for example the Rus can hunt animals to get gold and the Mongols get Food, Wood and gold by burning enemy buildings. Also the influence mechanic, I would have liked to see it used more in the game but pretty much every civ in the game has at least some type of building that has an influence "aura" for example and probably the most substantial, the Abbasids - They have an aura of influence around their landmark that they build at the start of the game that expands every time you construct a building in it (All buildings touched by the aura will make it bigger as well as contribrute towards the golden age bonus) and the more buildings you have inside the influence the higher your golden age bonus will be, like faster unit production and higher villager gather rates. A more mundane bonus would be the English farms being able generate gold if they are adjacent to a mill. A bit worrying is how the devs have reacted to some feedback like people said that the game is too zoomed in and would like to zoom the camera out a bit more and this has been answered by "BuT YoU CaNt PlAy ThE GaMe ThAT WaY", which is a bit odd as the camera already zooms out near hilly terrain so... A bit ranty all over the place comment but bellow you have a TLDR TLDR AoE4 feels a lot like playing AoE2 but with a bit more depth in some areas and a bit more in others. I would recommend to at least try the game if you can get over the graphics (In my opinion they are not bad but are a bit cartoony, and I can see why some people don't like them). Game will probably see loads of casual play but most likely wont get pro players too interested.

Thank you for mentioning that F1 key selects all military buildings, and F2 all economic buildings. Coming from games like SC2, WC3 and CNC3, I've gotten so used to putting all economic buildings on one hotkey so that I can find the upgrades, and all military buildings on another hotkey to help with production. This is such a nice quality of life improvement!

I'm pleased to see that the devs implemented most of the fundamental game mechanics from AOE2. AOE4 is the real sequel to AOE2. I can't wait to watch the top-tier AOE2 players play AOE4 and how they adapt, etc. Btw, T90 needs help with the hotkeys. My only suggestion was to remap a keyboard in software. Also he is having a hard time placing farms efficiently. 😋 Seriously though, do you have any ideas or insights on streamlining the interface for experienced AOE2 players?

With control groups.. It's like SC2 control groups (maybe Aoe2 as well but I haven't played that), with control will set whatever units or buildings you have selected as the control group. However shift + number will add the units or buildings to a control group, without reseting the control group. I haven't tested this one, but alt + number will likely remove the units or buildings selected from any other control group, and put them only to the control group selected. This also does not add units like shift does, it resets the control group that you binded them to.

Here's my opinion on AOE4 since the old alpha clips, I feel it's fairer to compare to AOE2 now. Pros: -Larger unit pool is nice -Markets randomly spawning makes markets on 1v1 maps more useful -Landmarks to advance make it feel different from AOE2, same for the sacred sites. -UIs are nice and clean, resource tab icons are obviously different from each other. -Stellar graphics, nice animations for units and buildings. -Troops able to build siege engines is an interesting take, and the siege workshop is still there too. -Additional clarity for unit types with pros and cons in their production buttons. -Buildings changing the environment around them aesthetically is a lovely touch. Chef's kiss. -New victory conditions is always nice -The UI stating your objectives/new objectives from building a wonder etc is a big improvement to the little countdown in the freaking corner. Cons: -Going back in advancements rather than following from 3 makes this feel more like AOE2 with improvements. -Weird spasming green holographic people during the building animations is distracting -The massive giant green swirl that appears when you assign villagers to do stuff is also very distracting -Green holographic outline of building site locations makes sense from a clarity standpoint, but much like the holographic builders and such, it does not suit the overall ultra-realistic visual style. -Currently lacking the coloured outlines for units behind buildings etc, meaning you can lose track of units. -All ranged siege having to set up means they're even more vulnerable to melee units. That might make them chosen to be built even less, potentially not at all unless they get a big range boost. -Larger-scale combat is rather messy and non-cavalry units can disappear into the crowd, units often try to path through each other rather than around and I can see some bugs springing up from that. -Villagers walking through TC walls while lacking the old AOE2 outlines means players could hide them out of sight

@spirit of the law: Thanks for the Beginner Guide, but can you make an Mongols in depth guide for the Ovoo mechanics. I know that the Ovoo gives the ability to make 2 units at the same time, but what about the improved research. Do you only need the improved research, to get both upgrades or do you need the basic one first, to get the improved version. And are the improved research versions even worth it? If not why?

Hey man, i have a question for you, would you be playing this game, if it wasnt an age of empires? is the game really good? or are you playing it cause you are a super AOE fan, and would not be playing it, if it wasnt part of the franchise? (SERIOUS QUESTION)

I can't wait, for AOE 4 it is going to be a blast! Hey Spirit, if you see this comment I had a video idea. I was think about the stone cost of repairing a castle verses just building a new one in AOE 2. Like at what percentage of the health does it cost more to repair it.?
@berkanarslan9166
@berkanarslan9166 3 жыл бұрын
Answer is half mate. Repairing structures from 1hp to full only requires half the resource you put when you build them. Save for TC as it doesn't require stone when you are repairing it. For 650 stone you can repair a castle 2 times.

I personally start my games with 4 villagers on the sheep, 2 to build 2 houses and then transition into wood, after that around 6 more to food and the rest (before the next age) to gold, depending on what civilization I'm playing and what type of map it is. I tweak it a little for Chinese sense their tax collectors make 15% extra gold (when over seeing gold mines) so I usually throw 2 to 3 extra workers on wood at the end of dark age. And water maps I put around 4 on wood before worrying about gold.

I do like the idea of having an indication of where the monk is. I hate hearing the sound and then having to search for the monk, difficult when you have multiple fronts.

When I 1st saw there are only 8 civs I was a bit skeptical...but my fears were assuaged when I saw how different each civ was, not just aesthetically, but also playstyle. As great as AoE2 is (it's still one of the best RTS games of all time) the one thing I never liked was how almost every civ has the same units with the exception of 1 or 2 unique units...the real difference being in all the plusses and minuses each unit gets depending on which civ you play. That's what I love about games like Age of Mythology, Warcraft 3, Starcraft and even Age of Empires 3...Every civ is different, not just in looks, but also the mechanics, playstyle and strategies. As much grief as AoE3 got (I personally love the game and its era in history), there are 2 things I wanted them to carry over to AoE4. The 1st thing was the Home City mechanic. When I began playing AoE3 I absolutely hated the Home City. I thought it was unnecessary and interrupted the game all too often. But then I grew to love it and I wanted to see it make a comeback. The other thing I wanted AoE4 to borrow from AoE3 was the navy/ships mechanics. I rarely play water/island maps on AoE2. I find water maps to be tedious and frustrating. AoE3 completely changed that...I absolutely love playing water maps on AoE3. Ships have their own population cap. You no longer have to split pop. space between villagers, military and navy. The actual ship to ship combat is a joy to play and watch. All the cannons firing, masts splintering and ships sinking...It's by far the best and most fun naval mechanic I've ever seen, before or since, in a RTS game. I'm not sure how they've implemented ships into AoE4, but I'm going to assume it has more in common with AoE2 than AoE3. 1 more thing I wanted to see make a triumphant return was "Regicide" as it was in AoE2. I loved trying to find and kill the kings of my enemies. It was fun and oftentimes hilarious trying to catch that quick little son of a bitch.

Good point about AoE 4 doing a good job of making asymmetric factions. I think that was something AoE 3 and AoM did well. Another thing I liked in AoE 4 was the different land marks you can build to age up. I feel that the AoE2 method of aging up feels a bit too limiting, and really liked the gods added in AoM. I also liked the different faction families in AoE3 (European, Native American and East Asian) and the innovative ways they had to age up.

In the technical stress test the Abbasids were just overpowered as they are the strongest early game civ getting 50% villager discount starting from early feudal (if you pick the economic wing) and they are not too bad in the late game either. Feel like the tech will get nerfed down the line but enjoy it while it lasts 😁

WOOOOOOOOOOO SOTL AOE4! Edit: Your starting civ kinda does matter. Choose either English or French. If you're a bit more confident, try HRE. Bit more confident? Rus, Abassyd or Delhi. Leave Mongols for last, as they're considerably more complicated. Don't play Chinese. Their bonuses well... they suck in comparison to every other civ.

Also, I believe there's a key on villagers that's "seek shelter" or something like that? You select villagers and they automatically distribute around nearby towers and town centers, akin to the bell on AOE2 but with only the selected villagers. I am PRETTY SURE this was a key when you selected vills, but since I can't play yet I can't confirm it. This is better than manually garrisoning.
