My experience of abuse was so similar. We were at a church for 8 years. We had started a small prayer group at my husbands office and they told us we could not continue unless we follow their parameters. They accused us of having problems with authority. We ended up leaving the church but they shared half truths about us and even made a recording about their view of what happened and sent it out to half the church. All of this while telling our prayer group not to talk about it. There were red flags before that and many other things that happened. But we’ve been gone for a year and a half and thankful that we were led out.

I spent about 12 years serving and working with the top mega churches in Tulsa, OK. There are several churches there that have extreme spiritual, financial, and physical abuse. I have watched hundreds of people leave those churches all with similar abuse stories. There are a lot of dark secrets in those churches. Things are mishandled with NDAs and settlements. It is so ridiculous how profound things are there. I completely relate on a very deep level.

I left the institutional church over 10 years ago to follow Jesus and find it is almost impossible to know Jesus as the Apostles did inside the institutional church. So i believe the reason these abuses and terrible thing happen is many dont know God barley at all. Not just pastors but the congregations

Wow. We experienced something very similar at One Life church Alexandria LA. We had an approved prayer group OFF campus with a group of Friends and was told 5-6 months later we could not longer have it if we didn’t follow the parameters they placed on it. The pastors mother in law would lead it, it would become a closed group, we couldn’t post pics of it and anything to be shared the pastor had to approve. Some was asked to leave the church. We was basically talked about by church pastor and his family to other church attendees. This is a family run church. Told us not to speak on it to anyone. Yet we were told by multiple people that they talked about it. So obviously they did. Fast forward the head pastor called a leadership meeting of about 48 people and told his version of the story even called the group a “One Life Lifegroup” which was a complete lie. There was a video made of this entire meeting and a mass email sent out to about 48 people. I was sent this video to a person who actually left the church prior to this. I was blown away hearing it with my own ears. Many of us listened to it including many that wasn’t even aware of the situation. By that evening they removed the entire audio recording- it was sent out by mistake. Immediately I didn’t return to that church and my heart hurts for all of the good people under that poor leadership. The leadership needs prayer. The people there need prayers. Many affected by this leadership. Many have a story many have left.

Appreciate this conversation, you may be surprised how wide spread this toxic leadership and narcissism is in the church. 16 years in a ministry where this serial spiritual abuse continues- even today! We were ousted and slandered, so similar! Thankful our eyes were opened when we were on the receiving end, but still have a heart for those in bondage. Thank you for your courage and trailblazing for so many lost and wounded sheep that were abused and ravaged by wolves in the pulpit.

It seems when people opted for the mega church. Maybe the pastors fell for the pride of mega........

There a church In st Augustine Fl that still going and I know for a fact spiritual abuse is still happening and it really messed me up took me long time to trust leaders again and I still struggle with trusting
