I’ve been to Dennis Severs house twice and I must say it absolutely gives the spirit of the French Huegonot weavers of the time. I cannot say enough what a treasure it is to London and to history!!!

And these houses cost a fortune to buy. I worked for Tower Hamlets Council's housing dept for 20 years, 5 years of which was spent in Spitalfields from Feb 89 to June on the Boundary Estate, then in Chicksand House then we moved into a new office (one stop shop) in Greatorex Street opposite the Jewish Fish Restaurant where you could get delicious lunches. Next to their federation building. There were flats above and 1 of the tenants who worked for the Jewish Federation had been a soldier in the Army in the 2nd WW. So interesting to talk to. Happy memories

Wow!! Look at Dan Cruickshank back in 1985, I didn't recognize him at first. Calm, relaxed, and doesn't interrupt people when they're talking. Complete opposite of the Shakespearean drama actor he is today on the BBC.

These old buildings should be protected and in fact it should be compulsory. Those who come later will thank those for it!.

When I started visiting Brick Lane market in the late 80's as teenager alot of those Beautiful Georgian houses were still derelict and I'm sure you could have picked them up pretty cheap. Still had some great old characters at the market,some of the old Jewish market traders especially!

My ancestors were Huguenots. They were silk weavers. They came to England to escape persecution in France. I was born in Bethnal Green not far from Spitalfields.

I think to be fair these days we are much better at saving historic buildings. But the slum clearances of the 1940-70s did take out a lot of buildings that perhaps shouldn’t have been. I think historic London still exists, (as someone that grew up near London in the 70s/80s and spent a lot of time working there) it’s just that too many folk look at these sorts of videos with nostalgia, wishing time had stood still. Which it doesn’t.

What are you talking about!??? What about British Land who are also referrred to in the film who wanted to demolish the buildings?? - and who are doing so in fact as we speak with their Norton Folgate Development? Same goes for the Bishopsgate Goodsyard development by Ballymore which they are trying to push through. Its actually wealthy British interests that have no respect. The Bengalis moved to the area in the first place because it was a cheap and forgotten area in central London - ie neglected by the English people!! Look at the film - look how neglected those buildings are, that isnt the Bengali's that the people that came before them - and the Bengali's were too poor to do anything about it, hence why they set up the co-op and tried to improve their standard of living. If people were living in squalor 5 or 6 to a room around you meanwhile some wealthy people came in and started buying up the buildings like that and living one or 2 people to a house (and these houses are v big) - you can surely understand how the lad feels about the conservationists! That doesnt mean that we can't also respect the conservationists too btw - both groups are coming form different angles and you can see that Cruikshank understands the tension and tries to deal with it by eg finding the factory alternative premises
