The Island of the Self

In spring 2021, Year 4 pupils from two primary schools in Tower Hamlets worked with Spitalfields Music, Mindful Music and Engines Orchestra.
The pupils created their own songs and learnt pieces written by composer Raph Clarkson to explore mindful practice, resilience and wellbeing inspired by the ‘The Island of the Self’ - a concept that uses metaphors of weather and nature to navigate the changing landscape of human emotions.
Mindfulness terminology and teachings including ‘Island of the Self’ and What is Your Weather’ are inspired by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh and Plum Village, a global community of mindfulness practice centres.
