The hook was massively used by Dutch pirates, firstly. In the case of falling over board, to catch on to the keel, as the ship kept moving. Also used for boarding, if fallen into the water, to secure yourself to the enemy ship. The hooks had handles inside, that resembled the shaft of a rapier. To hold your wrist in place with a thick strap. Most straps were made with goat hide.

Not to be a Debbie downer. But after my dad died two years ago I called my mom to check in because I live out of state. And it has become a normal thing where I call her everyday after work driving home.
