While I'm not in the market for such a machine as I had little interest in an electric bike, the shear excitement of riding the Ribelle RS clearly came through and opened my eyes to at the minimum wanting to experience one firsthand at some point. I agree it sounds amazing, but probably not so much if you cruise at a steady speed for a long time, the steady whine would get annoying. It sounds best speeding up and slowing down all the time, best for twisty roads. Personally I'd like to see one of these electrics engineered to be as quiet as possible for extra stealthy squidding purposes.

Great video! The extended giggle when you first started really says a lot. A friend of mine who has ridden his whole life has one and he loves it. Quick note: we should different mists between a few terms. Kilowatt = kW = the power rating of an electric motor (analogous to horsepower in an ICE). kWh = kilowatt-hour = the battery capacity (analogous to fuel in the tank, which gives you range). It’s super common to mix these up as they are very similar sounding but in terms of talking about a motorcycle they couldn’t be farther apart. You could build a bike with 100 kWh of battery for ridiculous range with a puny 10kW of power. The cool thing about the electric units though is that it’s easy to see how they relate. Our puny power long range bike should theoretically go for 10 hours at “full throttle” 10kW. 10kW * 10h = 100kWh. A bit of a simplification but helps understanding how a bike’s battery translates to range.

This is a pretty good review. I've actually had a Ribelle for just under a year, so close to hitting 10k miles! Took it from the UK down over the alps to Slovenia and back home via Berlin, absolutely amazing in the alpine switchbacks, a real purists riding experience since you don't have to constantly balance the engine/gears. I keep it in sport/full regen all the time, never bother with modes. Range hasn't been as big a deal as I expected, once you get up in the mountains 60% lasts a long time once the twisties get tight but on more open road you have to learn a little restraint. Motorways are the worst, avoiding them has been my big compromise but motorways suck on bikes anyway. I honestly think the range is enough, there are technical issues with thermal management on serial charge stops that would be a bigger priority for me but aren't feasible to solve yet.

@@LongDistanceMotorcycleFans depends on the conditions, usually average about 115 top to tail, but rarely use all of that. Up in the mountains it actually stretches longer because corners keep your speed down anyway, I could certainly have more but my experience is the range is "enough".

Nice to read positive real-life feedback of people actually riding the bike. It is useless to hear that the range is not enough, from people that never actually travelled with an electric bike. I did not do long travels with my zero DS. So I also can't really comment on it. What I see that in real live situations I can easily ride for 2 to 3 hours without recharging. Which is for me, also the time to take a break.

Thermal management? How quickly do you connect the charger? General rule of thumb with lithium batteries is to let the battery rest and cool down before charging. Something charging stations don't intuit and you will degrade your battery faster. Have you experienced any degradation from your battery recently?

I have a Surron Ultra Bee on the way. Its no electric rocket like this thing but for 6k its a steal. The biggest issue with electric now is really just cost. We already have borderline acceptable range and tons of power but the comparable ICE is like half the price. That being said never having to go to a gas station is priceless. Also in the case of a dirt bike, not making noise is a massive boost to let me ride in places I could never before.

I rode the LiveWire once. My take on these is that really for 99% of the time, you should just be in Eco mode, where you get good range, and let's be honest, it's still beyond stupid fast. You open these modes up for specific uses, but the idea of riding on full power 100% of the time like you do on a modern 1k ICE bike I think is backwards. It should be more like, "Here's how it does in Eco Mode, damn that's still fast" and then you have face-melt fast for those times you're down to blast through a charge in the battery.

Could you name some of them? I am genuinely interested. I for my part can see the current problems, but I think that there is also a lot of opportunity. For example would the weight of the battery and the construction of the motorcycle, if it was done right and the battery was split in 4 individual batteries, allow you to actually change the battery out for a fully charged one, at the gas station. This would really allow you to have zero charging time, if you want and it would allow you to make fast, long range trips, without having to constantly stop and wait for a while to charge.

@@sepro5135 That would be ideal but not really possible in the given infrastructure, you also have to take into account that there isn’t just one battery design. My issues are price compared to gas bikes, total range, and downtime (for now), ridiculous battery designs that are integrated into the chassis, as well as the ethical hypocrisy of how lithium is gathered when this is supposed to be a “green” alternative. On a more personal note I think the motorcycle designs are gaudy, lacking of a real exhaust note, no shifting (boring), and they have no character aside from going 0-60 really fast, which for a motorcycle isn’t really a selling point because they all do that.

When it comes to the hard facts, you are definitely right, although I feel like there is potential in the idea if swapping batteries (you just need a standardized system and just a little additional infrastructure). Although that may not make much sense in western countries, when you look at the streets and airquality of India for example, if the right technology is there, it could make a real difference. But that’s besides the point. Lithium is always an interesting case, as a lot of it is also mined under good working conditions, and it can make CO2 wise sense. But in the case of motorcycles I am not 100% sure about the latter. Concerning the design: I disagree, but I don’t have that sophisticated of a taste and to each his I suppose.

Batteries are getting better over time. Cars are getting range about the same as ICE and charging to 80% as fast as 30 minutes. The new KIA as almost as fast in the quarter mile as a Lamborghini Aventadore.

Im sure people are sick of hearing it but i bet even 10 years from now solid state or other new battery chemistries will become more mainstream and energy density WILL increase consistently with time. ICE is lucky to get a few percent of efficiency every decade, its already a "maxed out" tech.

Just an fyi, when it to electric there’s a difference between kW (kilowatt) and kWh (kilowatt hours). kWh is a unit of capacity, so a battery is 21.5 kWh, and when you measure efficiency it’s the amount of miles you get per kWh used, or another way of putting it is how many Wh (watt hours) you use in a mile. Now kW is about the amount of power moving at that exact moment, so a motor or charger can be putting out 100kW. kWh are your gallons, and kW is how fast you’re either filling up or blowing out those gallons. An example to contextualize everything: a 25kWh battery on a constant 25kW load would last for one hour. That same battery on a 100kW load would only last 15 minutes since the load is 4 times higher. The reverse is also somewhat true, a 25kWh battery charging at 100kW would be full in 15 minutes, but that would only be if you can maintain that speed the whole time, which batteries simply cannot do. Think of them like filling a balloon. At first they’re pretty easy and you can cram a lot in fast, however towards the end they become harder to fill and you have to slow down to avoid accidentally popping the balloon.

I’ve been driving an electric car for about 2 years now, and just took my first road trip about 2.5 times as long as the range of my car. The best way to go about charging is to plan your route out before hand and aim to arrive at the charger with 10-20%. The longer you own a ev the more comfortable you get running it down low. I’ll use my trip as an example. I made 2 stops, the first one was from 55-94%, took 23 minutes and delivered about 11kWh. The second stop was 20%-93%, took 31 Minutes and delivered 20.6 kWh. 8 minutes difference, double the range added, all because I arrived at a lower state of charge. Most electric car mapping software will target your arrival to be as close to 10% as the route will allow as that’s a good balance of spare range and best charging speeds. If you’ve committed to an EV purchase and have the time to do so, get out on a joyride and target getting home with 5% charge. You’ll notice that the cars typically hold a lot in reserve and the bottom 10% takes you way farther than the top 10% does. Teslas are even known to have 10 miles left at 0%. i squeezed 110 miles out of my car, it's rated for 93 and only estimates it can do 80 miles.

I’ve had my Ribelle for three years now - it quickly become my primary vehicle. I did a 6,000 mile ride (round trip west coast to east coast), had no problems with the bike nor with charging. Do I wish I also had a gas bike as a back-up? Nope 😊

Because they state for example range at 112 km/h. And you think you ride 112 km/h on average. But in reality, in real live situations, your speed is lower. And the range is better. So for me the manufacturer numbers are even some what pessimistic.

Thanks Great Video ! gotta remember any big bore ice bike gives the same "range anxiety" you mileage drops the faster you go. try pacific coast highway south of big sur, those twisties as speed will drain your tank quickly, and gas stations are not very close and close early evening. you can find a electrical outlet easier than a gas pump in many rural locations.

I really enjoyed this review. One thing you didn't mention is the Energica's are the only bikes that do level 2 and level 3 charging and I think that's definitely worth bringing up. To those haters out there, go ride an electric bike before you judge them you don't know what you are missing. As far as cost goes, I put 6767 kms on my Harley LiveWire this year used 817kWh of energy to do it. Charging at home that's about $138 CND, or for the Americans $101 to go 4205 miles. I wonder how much that would cost for a comparable ICE bike, fuel plus an oil change. When range comes up I like to ask people, if every time you left the house on your ICE bike you had a full tank of gas how often would you need to go to a gas station? The majority of riders are not doing 100+ miles every day on their bikes. They are going out for a blast each evening or commuting to work each day and then doing longer rides on the weekends when the weather cooperates. Yes there are outliers that do more than that and for those people this may not be a viable solution but the majority of people will not find range an issue and when you do have those longer days there is the L2 and L3 charging stations, charge while you are having lunch. IDK if electric is the future or not and it's certainly not for everyone but I think many people right it off too soon without really even considering it. My LiveWire was my first EV and I'm sold on electric my next cage will for sure be electric too... but it won't be a Cybertruck that thing is Fugly!

It's got the Spite giggle of approval, so it's got me interested. And being an Italian bike that doesn't need constant servicing is always a plus. That range though...... It's just got the range for a Nasho run - Royal National Park, south of Sydney, our local version of the Nürburgring - but that would get old real quick. There's a lot of other brilliant rides around Sydney, but it would take more than half the charge just to get there & back, leaving not a lot in the tank for pure giggle time. With our local charging infrastructure still being in the stone age you probably wouldn't risk the ride anyway. When charging infrastructure improves & battery manufacturing hits critical mass, lowering the cost, I'm all in, but for now it's a "not yet" from me.

I think a lot of riders, myself included, want a powerful motorcycle so they can have it on tap when they need/want it but aren't necessarily going to use it all the time just because it's there. You aren't going to get much range on an ICE bike either if you're smashing the throttle all the time and at the price of gas these days, I can see the appeal in this electric bike.

They were charging $14.50 to charge fully ($0.675/kwhr where he was at with a 21.5 kwhr battery even at 100% efficiency), a sportbike would burn about 3 gallons (just under $10 currently) for similar range of 130-150 miles. So what's that about the cost of gas? You would save money if you're going to be taking a road trip by burning gas. Now if you had solar powered home or wind powered, sure, then you've got something (but it's a total pain to legally hook up your own DIY solar setup to anything tied to the grid)

@@fetB So that's not entirely true, for example electric does not really just come out of the ground, you have to make it (often with natural gas, or where I'm from that's a huge majority of it). Since your conversion efficiency isn't 100%, your transferring away from the power station isn't 100%, your car charger isn't 100%, and your battery isn't 100% (and none are above 100%), physics says its less efficient. You may ask how many lives go towards "green energy", like a lot of child labor in lithium mines and that's just for the battery. Electric has all the above costs you mentioned because it doesn't come out of the air and often uses the same fuels you complained about. You think you aren't subsidizing electric with tax dollars? I'm close to the east coast, and they had about $120 in fees for $30 in electric, they were basically subsidizing the rich off the backs of the poor (make the electric cost almost nothing, so people in mansions would only be paying maybe $50 more than someone in a tiny shack), and if that's not subsidizing electric car ownership off the backs of the average and the poor, then I don't know what is.

It actually doesn't matter since foot pounds aren't foot per pound or pound per foot. Expressed mathmatically, they're not divided, they're multiplied, so the order doesn't matter. Torque=Force*Radius (lb*ft) but because math it can also be written Torque=Radius*Force (ft*lb) Edit: you are correct that I shouldn't be using the slash though. Gonna stop that. Why? I truly don't see the need for electric bikes! this bike is nearly £30,000 in the UK, equates to around $37,000 US dollars, my Aprilia RS 660 was £10,000, it does around 150 miles to a tank, cruise control is on the left and it works well, it has all the bells and whistles, and it takes less than 3 minutes to recharge. Also sounds awesome. I love all things Italian but 30 minutes to charge 40% is crazy. I'm a long way away from being convinced to convert to electric. This is what I will say about DC fast charging. It is mostly used for road trips where you go from 100 to 15/20 percent battery. At that point, you WANT to get off the bike and stretch because it's been about 2 hours of riding. Fast chargers are usually by a cafe or in the core of a city which makes it super fun to plug the bike in and go explore. As far as commute charging goes, if you use this bike for commuting, you can get to work and back easily on 1/2 a charge and if you have a standard 120 wall outlet or 240 laundry plug in your garage, the thing charges over night easily. Only needs a few hours with 240. So imagine waking up every morning with a full tank of gas on your ICE motorcycle and never needed to make a stop before or after work at the gas station. It really does hit a nice sweet spot with range now that the bike has the 21.5kwh battery. The real hesitation with riders is because it doesn't make a traditional engine sound. The same sport bike riders that will make fun of Harley guys for wanting heavy, deep rubble bikes at the sacrifice of speed and fuel efficiency; they take on the same mentality when they see the next best thing in terms of energy efficiency and performance...but where's the vroom vroom noises. You do you man, but you are no better than the Harley riders you spend all day bashing. Just be honest about it.

I'm a "retired" biker. The user experience isn't close to ice motorbikes yet. I mean I was used to ride an entire day, refuel every 180 kms (ten minutes so that everyone was ready) and then ride again. I guess the range anxiety will be cured once we find chargers as much as petrol stations and at that time I guess it will be at a point when I could compromise.

I was hanging out with three different motorbike gangs, one of them it was based on the Appennini. That would mean riding my bike every weekend, in sundays we would meet at 7 and ride for half a day for the whole good season, sometimes we would meet in winter too if it wasn't too cold. My annual milage was around 10k km using it exclusively in weekend. I'm sorry for you if your rides are that short.

That was entertaining. It's got to be really hard for the EV companies to deal with the weight, range, battery life issues but I'm glad they keep trying. These could really become more viable in the future as they're building a lot of new nuclear power plants around the world. @Liam Tuthill Many states and countries have stressed power grids already. Increasing the percentage of EV's, which is a huge priority for a lot of these places, will only amplify the problem. Fortunately, many of these places are trying to get ahead of the problem by building new nuclear reactors or extending the life of the existing plants.

Hi, I've now seen the video for the second time. The first time before and the second time after I bought the exact motorcycle. I was lucky enough to find a used one (830km on the clock). I had to laugh at the same places. Still very entertaining, thank you. I rode ice motorcycles for many years, mostly Yamaha R1s, so I was spoiled when it came to performance. But apart from the performance beyond 150 km/h, I don't miss anything. I enjoy not having to worry about engine speed or gear. This summer I did a 2500km tour through Germany with my Energica and I was happy to have to charge every now and then so my butt could always recover a bit. ;-) You're right that you're always tempted to open the throttle all the way, but with time (or age) you calm down. :-) I often go on weekend trips (around 250 km) with friends who still ride ice motorcycles. I always have to charge every now and then and it usually takes us longer for our break, where we often eat a little something, than it takes to charge the motorcycle. Of course, with new technology you have to accept adversities from time to time, but this special driving experience makes up for it. I am convinced that this is the future and it is not a bad one. On price, consider zero maintenance and the savings of oil, filters, valve adjustments, etc., and the hassle of servicing. It all adds up over the years, so after 4 or 5 years the purchase price makes total sense. (That said, of course I wish it was cheaper up front)

I love the idea of electric motorcycles and cars. I also love my ice vehicles. We need a breakthrough in battery technology. Sitting around waiting for it to charge would suck. I can fill up my Himalayan, with spare petrol cans, in under 5 minutes and be good to go for 500+ miles. Sure it’s a Himalayan so it’s dirt slow, but it’s still fun.

As battery technology improves, bikes like this will get a range of 2 to 300 miles. That will make them really useful motorcycles. The charging infrastructure will also improve. I believe Tesla is now going to allow other electric vehicles to use some of their network, that will improve the experience. This is a very new technology when you think it’s only been main stream for a few years. The fun of electric vehicles is absolutely undeniable. Also consider her you don’t have valves to adjust, oil to change transmissions to break clutch is to replace. These bikes are going to be super reliable and long lasting. Great review.

This thing looks insane.. props for making something that actually looks really cool. Love the naked bike sort of center look + the sport bike fairings. That would be so weird to experience... no clutch... I wouldn't know what to do! The electric noise actually sounds pretty cool too. Hopefully there will be some option to make it louder! That torque.. my god..... The regen braking is an awesome touch and it's definitely necessary. 171 hp is fucking insane hahaha.
