Normally instantly recognisable by its distinctive US Army Air Force markings, Spitfire RW382 has recently been the recipient of a new temporary colour scheme in the form of MK924 from No.302 Squadron, Royal Air Force.
MK924 was flown by Flight Sergeant Michael Murayda who was an American volunteer with Polish heritage. Michael flew ‘924 during Operation Overlord (better known as ‘D-Day’) and was later awarded the Polish Cross of Valor by the exiled Polish government for his service in the Polish 302 Sqn.
Today, 31st August 2024, an event was held on behalf of the Polish Heritage Flight at RAF Northolt to commemorate the contributions made by Polish personnel serving in the Royal Air Force during the second world war.
Due to the Polish Heritage Flight’s usual aircraft being unserviceable - the Historic Aircraft Collection’s Hawker Hurricane Mk.XII - a collaboration between the Suffolk Spitfire and HAC saw Spitfire RW382’s new temporary paint scheme become a reality to mark today’s event.
The aircraft is seen in this video being pulled out of Hangar 3, before starting up and departing the airfield at Duxford. Later in the afternoon, the Spirfire returns following the event ar RAF Northolt.
