A Colorchecker Passport is one of the best investments for me. Or the flimsy collapsible cloth grey card for $10-20 that has been honestly surprisingly decent. Just 100 or 200K +- off true 18% grey, but with most 10 bit cameras now, it is decent enough.

Great video! Interesting tip regarding manually bumping one way or another based on pref (cooler or warmer than true white balance). How do you keep the footage looking the same between days and cameras doing this? Seems like getting the camera to the perfect white balance each time and then bumping in post would make that work easier..?

Thanks for the video ! Very useful. If I may suggest something, it would have been nice to add a last chapter to explain how to set it actually, in a real shooting situation. What is the thought process. For example I shoot Log, so the image I see is very grey... And I can't really see the WB. So should I first set the camera on natural colors to set eyeball the WB, and then back to log ? Thank you very much for those very useful videos !

I have the Sony AX53, and once I learned how, setting the White Balance on that camcorder is dead simple. You go to Menu, Camera/Mic, White Balance, then choose "One Touch" at the bottom. You then hold a white sheet paper(or a gray card) in front of the camera until it fills the entire screen, tap Set, and you should have much more natural colors and skin tones.

Sam! My friend! I had a question about the S5, this might actually be a good idea for a video too. On my Nikon D700 I have the option to do a timer release photo burst with continuous autofocus, so say I want to set it to a tripod and have the camera take, say 15 photos of me posing, for a thumbnail. I set the parameters as far as what the interval is and whether I want it to refocus every time or not. So that way I can be showing something in my hand, and it will autofocus on this object as I move it around. Can I set something like that up in Lumix S5 with continuous AF and say, save it to one of the custom buttons, that way at the end of my video shoot I can just do that and get a decent thumbnail! Thanks in advance! Keep up the good work!

The Fuji X-T4 has Ambient priority WB, however it still messes up. Especially in mixed lighting situations. I just wish more cameras had the same function as the A7iv, binding the WB to a control dial/comp dial to scroll through the kelvin quickly. Sometimes, there's no time to use a grey card at all.

@SamHolland
@SamHolland Жыл бұрын
😂 how dare they?! Yeh you just have to take each scenario as it is and select the white balance according to what is best following the tips in this vid. Most locations and lighting environments will need a slight adjustment. You could set it in the middle around 6200 for the whole day and you’d be ok but it will require some extra tweaking. Kelvin is a system of temperature measurement used in physics and science. The higher the Kelvin the higher the temperature. Ironically, in nature a heat source which emits orange or yellow is colder than a white or blue. 5600 kelvin is 5300 celsius. 1000 kelvin is 725 celsius, It sounds strange when its said that 1000k is a warmer colour than 5600k 😅

Color temperature is so counterintuitive sometimes. It's based on the color of a flame, which at lower temperatures, is red and at its hottest is blue. But visually, we think of blue as a cool color and red as a warm color. So you could tell someone to make the white balance a bit cooler, expecting them to make it bluer, and they lower the Kelvin and make it redder, which is technically correct based on your instructions. GUH.

Hm, I'm pretty new to all this, but from what I've gathered so far it seems that most luts expect you to white balance your camera first. I'm like "okay", but doesn't that eliminate my choice to make light in the scene look warmer or cooler since I'd be matching the temperature of the light like you said? If that's the case, how do you even use luts? Is setting warm/cool temperature completely dependent on color grading? Because of this confusion I'm starting to lean towards using no picture profile or using something like cine2, which I've heard is a "what you see is what you get" profile that doesn't require much grading.

Great question. Glad you’re asking this type of thing… yes! White balance is a creative choice just as much as anything. I use 6200k when using 5600k lights. Just because I prefer a warmer look. This video is more to help people understand white balance and how to use it. Also I don’t recommend always matching the camera white balance to the lights. Hope this helps.

No, that’s true. Usually I found myself switching between 3 WB settings at weddings. That’s where the WB presets come in handy so you can switch between them easily. Once you get to know which ones you need when, it becomes easy 🤩👌🏻🎥 thanks for watching

ok I'm still curious on warm light (3:34).. how you gonna set your white balance? I mean, in my case.. I'm a color blind so I'm heavy reliable on a grey card, If warm light hit the grey card then the white balance will not white anymore right? it will become yellowish or orange but how I will know I'm on correct color? my major issue is to get the right skin color.. sorry in my grammar, I'm not a english speaker.. but I hope you will get my point...

Yeah I changed the White Balance setting on my Sony AX53 from Auto to One Touch. Auto would often still be too washed out even with good lighting. With One Touch, I hold a white sheet of copy paper up until it fills the screen, tap set, and once it finishes I have much more natural skin tones and colors.

Gotta admit I do find it hard to wrap my head around... like you said you often don't want your whites to look white at all e.g. blue-y in the evening or gold near a fire.... I liked what you said about nevermind setting it perfectly: if you want create warmer say light source is colder and if you want cooler tell cam the light source is warmer... but my question is - 'than what?' i.e. what is the point that you want it to be warmer than or cooler than? Is the spot where whites look white (for better or worse) what you get if you set using a grey/white card?
@SamHolland
@SamHolland 8 ай бұрын
If you want your image to look warmer or cooler than it is. Or if you set your white balance “perfectly” but you want it to look warmer or cooler. If you set it using a card, anything white will look white.

Hi, do you have something (a video, Advice, etc) to help with White Balance on a VIDEO Camera? I'm struggling with my Canon Vixia HF G70. I had the exact same problem with my G50 (Which I sold, at a loss, to buy a G70, in hopes of better luck). On AUTO It turns everything blue almost immediatly. Even when it doesn't, after a few minutes sitting in front of it, it will turn everything blue. I have to turn the camera on and off again, over and over again. When I 1st turn it on, it looks fine, then, it goes blue. I'm looking for the best path, to resolve this issue. I'm super familiar with manual STILL Photography, but not so much with this. This is a new problem, I have not had with my many previous cameras. #SendHelp

I used to add a little bit of green/yellow to highlights when grading. That’s the thing with white balance, get it “correct” in camera then you can do whatever you like when grading.

But what about if you set the white balance perfectly and it's in manual mode, and then the lighting conditions completely change by the sun/clouds/etc and this keeps happening?
@SamHolland
@SamHolland 11 ай бұрын
You could set an inbetween so that when changes happen, it’s not so obvious. However, when lighting changes, it’s natural for it to change slightly BUT if you use auto WB, your grade will look strange and unnatural. Does that make sense? 🎥

@DigiDriftZone 11 ай бұрын
@@SamHolland Thank you, that's good advice, I'll play around :) - initially I wanted to film at our WeWork office but their lights cast this weird green tint and I couldn't correct for it in camera by adjusting the white balance, it just looks unnatural, I think it's low CRI and trying to replace all the cheap fluorescents with my own lighting is proving difficult (pretty big room). So I'm now opting to film during the day with natural lighting from a window and a a softbox (ML60, talking head), but that has its own challenges :)

3:30 mistake number 4: you said if the lights are 3200K move the white balance to 4500k. But you didn't explain how you came up with 4500. What if my lights are not 3200k but 2500 or 4000 or any other random number? how do we accurately know where to move the balance?
@SamHolland
@SamHolland 4 ай бұрын
Hi. I am sorry for the confusion 🙏🏻 these aren’t really rules just more guides. Keeping your white balance around 5600-6200 is a good place to start. I find that works for me in most situations. People often use 4500 when using a combination of candle flames and lamps (2000-3200k) and whiter light sources like moonlight. Did you catch my latest video on white balance? I hope this helps. Just remember, you don’t always need the whites to look white kzbin.info/www/bejne/paeaiql5gNaipNEsi=RPIcUEculU0M6wjX

@@SamHolland I'll check that out for sure thanks! I've been doing video for over 20 years. But I went to school for psychology and it was just like a weekend thing that I became neurotic at. But when I started it was so much harder than it is now so things like color correction and color grading were next level hard to reach because just building a computer strong enough to edit and dealing with not being able to edit new codecs and so on it's just been a long road. And I've always been such a run and gun shooter flying solo that I often left white balance on auto especially when the lighting changes a lot. One more quick question, if the lighting changes a lot like say you're doing a wedding or I'm following someone around their farm and they're going in and out of shade and there's clouds occasionally, would auto white balance be okay or risky in your opinion? It's done pretty great for me overall. I don't remember which video of yours I watched but there was one that showed a casting of the green on your face from the plants nearby. I suppose it's beyond our control things like that... Especially run and gun.

I must admit that I found the way you held your color checker distracting from an otherwise excellent video. You had your fingers on some of the color squares and I've read that doing that will alter the color on those squares over time and it is a much discouraged practice.

Certainly good tips, but.....I'm primarily a wildlife photographer and it's not always easy to get critters to sit still long enough to change camera settings. By the time I adjust all the settings, the bird is gone. White balance is one of the easiest settings to adjust in post, so I typically set the camera to a ballpark setting, like sunny or cloudy, and then sit down with LightRoom.
