I have 1,400 hours and play competitively and I have never heard about input delay. For example, I think RNG is a way bigger issue than input delay. Edit: Since Splatoon 3, I have now seen a lot of input delay, and yes it is a big problem. Not in Splatoon 2 tho, it is way worse in Splatoon 3.

At ~700 hours, and a recent charger main, I can say the input delay is minor but noticeable, however, problems with the controller itself are much more noticeable (like how about a fifth of the time my shots don’t come out because I let go of the ZR button for so little time the game engine doesn’t register it)

Gotta be frank, never really had a problem with input delay. I mean, isn't it just a Switch problem in general when you're playing wireless without the controller close to the system? But I'm no pro, so I get it if it's more noticeable to people with sharper reflexes.

I'd like to clarify the misinformation about the meta when nobody was using shooters. The reason nobody used shooters wasn't because of input delay, but because other weapons were broken. Take Splatoon 2's start. If anyone remembers the days of 1.0, tri-slosher was absolutely busted with it's range and armour being super strong to where the meta was triple tri-slosher.
@sonicrunn3r895
@sonicrunn3r895 2 жыл бұрын
It was also due to a lot of the weapons that dealt with Tri weren't in the game yet. Eventually Tri got hard nerfed, but eventually buffed to arguably a stronger state than it was at on launch (though the different meta simply made it a lot less optimal than it used to be)

The delay seems to be prominent with wireless controllers. When I play with my switch all put together the delay feels much less (iow I can play). But splatoon's not the worst by far. MegaMan Collection is imo unplayable with a wireless controller or joycons.

That's literally false. If you notice something and you're aware of it, and try to control it - but can't - you're fighting with the game. If you don't notice something and are blissfully ignorant and think that everything works fine - you have a much easier time. Once you start noticing stuff like this, everything goes downhill and you can't play to your potential, or even play at all. I know this is true, because this happened in Apex Legends to me. My PC isn't the best and I was getting my ass handed to me. Literally couldn't win most shootouts. Once I realised why I can't aim for shit - it was because of slight input lag - I did my best to reduce it to minimum. Once I did that - I was winning most fights, cause I finally could aim and the game finally felt responsive. Input lag is a HUGE issue for people who notice it.
@KellerCo

@@patrykzukowski7471 your story doesn’t even match your bottom line. You didn’t even notice you had input delay for the longest time which is the opposite of the point your trying to make and it’s completely different than in splatoon where everyone has the same delay. In apex, the people you are playing have 0 input delay, so obviously they would react better than you. They may also have a higher hrtz monitor which could help them too.

@@KellerCo You're right, I think I just made two different points: how not noticing delay affects the player and how noticing it affects the player. Ok then, so everyone has the delay. Fine. My point is that when you don't notice it and it doesn't bother you at all it might as well not exist at all. For all you and your brain knows everythings fine and dandy. You're completely in sync with the game. But for someone who notices the delay their brain can't react to what's happening. Everything is out of sync and is hard to control, predict, etc. and the performance goes downhill, waaay down (for me, at least). So, just because you don't notice it, doesn't mean it can't be problematic.

100 milliseconds of delay for a 60fps game is 6 frames. The switch itself has a native input delay of 5-6 frames that applies to all games. So that would mean Splatoon 3 has between 0-1 frames of added input delay, which is about as good as they can do. You'd be asking them to remedy problems with the hardware, which isn't reasonable. Also, tri-slosher certainly wasn't meta because it was hard to aim with shooters. That's an insane claim. It was meta because it had good kill speed, good painting, great base stats, and probably the best kit in the game, of burst bomb/ink armor. The fact that it was also lenient with aiming just made it accessible. Good players have never had trouble aiming shooters, because it's really not hard. Chargers specifically had some problems with hitting, but that's mostly because of the online lag, not any input delay. However, we're pretty sure Splatoon 3 is using new servers instead of the old Wii U/3DS ones, so that might be better.

@@patrykzukowski7471 That's just not true. Gyro controls are almost universally considered the best way to play, specifically because of how responsive they are. According to this test it seems to be about 90ms or 5.4 frames, same as Splatoon 2. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJWwe3ybmNqWqK8 From what I've gathered, this is inconsistent across other games on the Switch, some are fine and some are not. Splatoon 2 is also about 50ms slower than Splatoon on the Wii U. To be fair, 5-6 frames of input delay isn't very noticeable compared to most console games, and Splatoon does a great job with gyro controls to make it feel smoother.

I dunno, it certainly feels better to me. I was in the firing range last night testing out weapons on the demo and unlike in Splatoon 2, I was more consistently hitting the moving dummies when using a charger. It might not be more responsive in input delay, but the motion control itself feels much more responsive. Splatoon 2 even on sensitivity +5 feels super slow. On sensitivity +1.5 in the Splat3 demo, it felt faster and significantly more fluid than Splatoon 2 +5 sensitivity. It honestly reminded me of Splatoon 1's motion controls with how responsive they were. I read something about this kind of thing a while back being hardware related, and perhaps that is the case. Maybe it isn't and this is simply a placebo effect OR this is a Splatoon Engine problem that can potentially be fixed with enough effort. Either way, there's something going on that we just have to deal with unfortunately. Maybe, just maybe, there's a small chance it will get fixed in future updates though I don't count on it sadly. Splatoon has some of the best controls. If input delay was so bad in Splatoon 2, it wouldn’t have sold nearly as well as it did. Even casual players would feel it if it was that bad. I’m glad this series introduced gyro to larger audiences. Having inaccurate controls in a game that relies heavily on accuracy wouldn’t be good business. Splatoon 2 is the bestselling console shooter (by far) in Japan for a reason. They love good smooth controls with great accuracy. So idk. Anyway Splatoon 3 looks phenomenal.

Something I've noticed is that vertical sync in a lot of games produces an effect similar to mouse smoothing. Most console games have vertical sync enabled by default, and thus have large amounts of input lag. Without vertical sync, you end up with better input latency at the cost of extremely jarring screen tearing.

No you’re wrong. It’s software. Why don’t you look at actually tests dude. Watch gigaboots button2pixel test for mega man. Snes and pc are best follow by Xbox, switch then ps4. All consoles have more lag than pc generally but part of it is software … splatoon could be better optimized if they wanted. The different mega man games had different lag.

I actually think its a hardware-level problem. I remember Nintendo mentioning that Kirby and the forgotten land can run at 60fps but they toned it down to 30fps because there was a lot of input delay at 60fps. Splatoon2-3 run at 1080p60fps so I can only assume this is the cause.

I'm prob being a bitch abt this but like, the input delay in Splat 2 has a tiny effect, if any, in comp. I can assure you that a comp player will bring up other "huge problems" (Latency, shooter meta, k52, missles, etc) before they talk about input delay. Also, people play weapons like inkbrush, trislosher, and rapid blaster, because they accomplish different goals than a charger or jetschelcher. Brush and tri specifically play close to the enemy while rapid blaster places chip in areas charger and jet can't reach.

At launch, the Tri-Slosher was super meta, but not at all because of input delay or it being tough to aim them. Shooters just didn't ink the ground in 1.0 nearly as well as they do now, and the Tri-Slosher had the absolutely BUSTED kit of Burst Bomb + Ink Armor. Sure, it was easy to aim, but that wasn't the whole of it. A mere fraction as to why 3 of them were often run on a team.

I think we are taking it to far in here. Splatoon its is own world separate from pc competitive. Sure input lag can be a problem but in splatoon not really, you don't need strong faster response times when nobody else does. If we are talking about pc games like fortnite or anything else. I can assure you, no one is losing a tournament because of input delay, at ANY competitive level. Especially if the delay is exactly the same for everyone, 100% of the time (as in it's always consistent). If a "pro" player doesn't play the game with the input delay in mind, then they're probably not actually a "pro" player. When the delay is consistent, then there are no "random" or "unfair" losses, because everyone has the same problem.
