I don’t get how netcode isn’t a top priority. Many fighting games have skyrocketed in relevance just by adding rollback netcode. Nintendo could sell anything with “now it works” as the slogan.

The reason I've heard from a friend is that because Japan has such a more dense population, it's so much less of an issue for them, and we just get their games for them to make some extra side cash pretty much, there's less reason for them to actually support the West's communication issues.
@qualityarsenic39222 жыл бұрын
@@jubbydubby8275 The dense population argument doesn't cut it, imo. I've played Smash matches with friends of mine that live in the same city as me over a stable internet connection and still gotten tons of unstable matches and disconnects. It's definitely not that.

I don’t know if Nintendo are technically incompetent and their senior management who make these decisions have now idea how to implement good online services, or just don’t care enough but their online has always been pretty poor quality. It’s like the games they make are the priority and any online things are only a last minute thought. That’s fine when games didn’t need or use a lot of online, but for games like Splatoon or others where online provides almost all of the longevity of a game it’s not good enough any more.

I think part of Nerrel's appeal to me is how succinct he is. Still has the occasional good joke or tangent but is otherwise straight to the point and is bang on more times than not. Feels like a lot of reviewers waste time on purely descriptive language *and then* move onto their actual opinions (sometimes going 80/20 where they will say this is what the game objectively does and then a few sentences at most on what that makes them feel). Don't know about you, but while someone looking at a review may know nothing about the game and will need those descriptions, spending most of a video or article copy-pasting the Wikipedia article doesn't seem efficient to me.

The hard-to-find lockers were a pain in the ass when I was actively seeking them out. I didn't even understand they were in the lobby at first, and when I was directing my partner to try to find it, I almost had to take the controller from him to find it because he just thought that dark wall was part of the background. It was a very weird choice to have the locker room hidden in plain sight like that.
@Buglin_Burger78782 жыл бұрын
Because those lockers have to load in, get data, models, ect. Likely they do that so it lessens load times since you can fill them decently well. It is also likely to protect players from any exploits such as placing 1,000s of items to cause things to lag or crash.

This is a really good review and one I've been hoping for. I want to add a few small things For flick stick Splatoon does sort of have a work around, Y as a camera reset defaults to the direction you are facing, while this is no where near as good usually it does actually work well with Squid Roll. If you do a backward squid roll combining Y flicks the camera to face that direction. I still don't personally care much if they add it but some form of functionality is there. I do also want to give Squid Roll more credit. The ability is super fluid but the skill in being able to parry attacks and a burst movement option tied to it is huge. But most importantly squid rolling of walls allows moving through stages to be way easier, and in general makes using the walls way less of a bad option. In Splatoon 1-2 approaching via wall was kind of terrible because it was predictable and slow, but being able to roll and shoot while falling and use squid surge adds much needed mixup options that make climbing them feel like a more balanced option. I think with time and players being used to them it will be even more clear how nice a change it is. I do hope the netcode can improve but that and the map design to me are the big disapointments as a hardcore fan. That being said I still agree its easily the best game in the series, and a lot of QOL improvements are nice. Hopefully we can see more improvements through the continued updates.

After 100% completing Alterna with every single weapon I’ve just been doing countless Salmon Run matches and grinding cash for some sick gear. I’ve actually been digging Tableturf quite a bit, once you understand the rules it becomes a nice little distraction to whittle away at while petting your cat or something. My only major grievances are the frequent connection issues, and the baffling way in which Scales are distributed. Right now there’s not much incentive to actually slay Cohozuna when your performance feels so disconnected from your loot. Regardless, I’ve been having an absolute blast with this game. College and basic housekeeping are the only things keeping me from just marathoning Anarchy Battles all night.

I think another huge improvement the game did is that they actually gave you a reason to use your coins now. You can find the same piece of gear you already own from a shop to upgrade it to have more sub abilities and now they have a mini gacha game with coins at the lobby. they also got tickets for the weapons and if you really want a specific weapon like me that wanted the 52 gal from the gecko I can just pay 3 tickets to get them quicker. makes it more welcoming for older players that just want to play with their main weapon from the very start without having to deal with the long level up process. Also the fact that you can in theory get any gear with any ability you want, although the grind is big for it, the fact that it’s an option it’s just really nice to have. @EnderMan592 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure if I’m alone in this opinion, but for me the single player campaign really felt like just more octo expansion with a new (and I will say the best) hub world, and due to the huge similarities between the two, including the ending, while not mechanically but in the core concept of the reason for the fight, it all felt like a rehash with having the scenery of the levels be floating objects, to navigating a building, and a grand finale with some major consequences, but more on that last part in the spoilers below. Also, the change in scenery from desert to snow was kinda a bummer, since I liked the desert part of the game very much as far as the hub went. Gonna go into spoilers & more detail below, so be warned! I think having the worlds not each have a boss is a bit strange, or at least to me, and the bosses felt lackluster compared to the designs and mechanics in 1 and 2. I enjoyed the building of tension before a boss started, and the uniqueness to each design too. This time it’s just the announcers, and that’s a huge miss, since you know what to expect by the time you get to the first boss, and I think each boss is sorta mechanically lacking as you kinda just shoot them until they’re down, where the other bosses in the series had a mixture of shooting but also threw in some obstacles such as climbing. Luckily, Grizz has a pretty fun fight, though I do wish there was more to it, an extra layer or something perhaps? The final boss of the first game is still my favorite for the variety DJO introduces with having to chase him and overall using all the mechanics of the game in some way, and while Grizz does kinda have this you more or less just collect continently placed salmon eggs and chase him as he kinda slowly attacks you one attack at a time, opposed to S1’s Octavio’s more layered attacks. As far as the final phase goes, I wish we were more involved somehow, rather than just sucking up the goop and fighting the same enemies we’ve been fighting the entire game. Have smallfry (or I guess bigfry in this case) be controlled by the player, maybe have Octavio throw bigfry like how it works in game as a replacement for the bomb. (Also, I expected DJ Octavio to make a reappearance as a 2nd to final boss when he was taken away by the goop, but no, he just reappears for the finale. Rather unfortunate since I think he has the best bosstrack in the game.) Also, is it just me or is the enemy variety this time around lacking? I noticed they didn’t use every enemy from the previous entry, and even then not a lot of new additions to the enemy cast were made, which is disappointing since I really liked the new enemies, I just wish more were introduced. If I think of anything more I’ll add it to this conversation or this message, and apologies for how rambly this is.

Single player is the best in the series baring Octo Expansion. And the _four_ new weapons they have added thus far are very unique both aesthetically and how they play.
@meta94922 жыл бұрын
The single player is anything but underwhelming, splatanas and stringers play so differently to whatever you are comparing them too idk how you think they are similar and lockers and tableturf aren’t unnecessary, if you really think this is the case then maybe you just don’t like splatoon or just grasping at straws to bring out a poor argument

@@samuelstephens6904 Nintendos service isn’t a service but as Nerrel said. I hated paying for Xbox live when I was a kid but looking back holy shit it was so much better than nintendos offering. Price is more these days but paying 30 more a year to get actual stable connections / server based matchmaking / free games and deals really isn’t bad. Trust me when I say Nintendo online is the worst of the worst. One of the big selling points when I was young was the fact that Xbox live came with access to voice chat, that sounds ridiculous now but at the time it was a big deal to be able to talk to people on halo 2. Nintendo doesn’t even offer that but you need to use a phone app and separate headset not to mention you can’t access instant messaging on the switch. Also one that just came to mind is the fact that you can’t play free games online with the switch without paying the fee. Ps and Xbox you could play free games online even without a membership, nowadays that would be your fortnite etc. Ps network is a bit less value cause they don’t have as good a game pass but they offer free games monthly to keep forever. Fact Nintendo charges 30 extra a month for some n64 Roms is sickening the more I think ahah

The netcode is worse than Splatoon 2. Worse, and probably the worst of the series. I've had instances where I've had multiple disconnects or communication errors in a row that were not at all my fault, and my internet is practically perfect. The worst part about this is that sometimes the game will give you a 10 minute ban when you did literally nothing wrong. I had a friend who had their router on the other side of the house, which is not an optimal setup, but it shouldn't have resulted in everyone getting kicked out of the match every time he joined our games (and me getting a 10 minute match ban in some instances). I've had Salmon Run games where we make it to Wave 3, only to have a communication error and lose all that progress because it decided to make the host someone with McDonalds quality Wi-fi. All that effort, gone. And when you get a match ban for 10 minutes atop of that, it makes the game (quite literally) unplayable. If you've completed the Singleplayer in its entirety like me, then you have nothing to do but f*** around and play cards, look at lockers, or look at posts in-game while you wait for the ban to wear off. It's infuriating, and I cannot remember a time where I played Splatoon 2 or even Splatoon 1 where I got that many disconnects/connection errors in a row. If we're paying for this service, it needs to be good. This game also has competitive modes, and it's embarrassing to have to play a game where every input matters with netcode this abysmal. The only saving grace is if you get to play at a lan tournament.

Yeah, the stringers seem a bit weird at first. If you're not charging them, they're short-range spread guns. If you are charging them, you can take people out in about two hits. I've grown to like the Reef-Lux, mostly because Tenta Missiles and because it covers ground quickly, which is a fair payoff for non-exploding arrows.

One of the biggest upgrades from 3 to 2 that I think would've been cool to mention in that section was the near entirely overhauled special selection. The specials in Splatoon 2 ranged from broken unintentionally to broken intentionally, and while some of the larger offenders are still in the mix (looking at you, map wide homing missiles that reveal your location and force you to move to not get one shot) I don't think there are any strictly bad specials in 3.

I liked Splatoon 2 but I haven't played it in a few years, I was never that interested in online shooters, but salmon run being always available alone makes me interested. Before it was like if you mostly played cod zombies but we're limited to playing it on Tuesdays. Splatoon was already good but it seems each game has improved on the last. My main problem with Splatoon is the same problem I have with most of these types of games, even with all the improvements it's fundamentally the same game that I either pay full price for it again, or I play the old game as it slowly dies. At the end of the day I'll probably not be buying it simply for the fact I hate the switch online service, the connection is terrible, this would be all I'd use it to play, and the way Nintendo has streaming service-ified their legacy content and killing off the virtual console has always left a bitter taste in my mouth.

The game feels so, so much better than splatoon 2. I hardly think that Nintendo improving and making a great sequel twice a decade is scummy in the least. Especially considering that all its competitors are full of loot boxes and skins and buckets of micro transactions. Splatoon has none of that. At most it will get one paid dlc. If Nintendo completely changed splatoon to the point where it was not "fundamentally the same game" they would lose the millions of people who want more splatoon. On top of that, it's already unlike anything else on the market.
@daddykarlmarx61832 жыл бұрын
@@leftovernoise I get what you're saying but still, paying full price once again for what's practically the same experience, idk how they'd go about making that better, discount for owners of the old game, 1 constantly updating game with a subscription like an mmo, who knows, also I never said it was scummy, I just know that for me personally it's hard to justify the cost for the amount of enjoyment I personally would get, maybe if I can get it used or on sale in a year or 2
