Splatoon 3's Wave 1 DLC (Inkopolis) Isn't Great

Splatoon 3's new DLC allows you to return to Inkopolis from the first game... and that's about it. A nice little bonus perhaps, but not a whole wave of DLC in our minds.

This DLC seemed like the perfect opportunity to bring the story mode of Splatoon 1 to the Switch, allowing people who skipped the Wii U to experience the entire story on one console. Maybe they could've included it on the arcade or something to get around the timeline issues, but this really does seem pointless without the main part of Splatoon 1 fans have been jonesing to see on the Switch.

This was my thopughts exactly. They could have had a new store for hotlantis, an arcade filled with all the games we've had, and I'm striaght up bitter about the lack of Inkopolis news. At a further push I would have wanted new interiors for things such as Grizzco and the lobby but we didn't even get the first requests.

It's cute, but only took me 10 minutes to look around the whole place and feel done with it. I wasn't expecting much but it's a disappointment that going into the lobby or Grizzco from Inkopolis just takes you back to their rooms in Splatsville. The jukebox was a more engaging nostalgia trip than the hub by far.

It's so bizarre to me that they added the splatoon 1 lobby when Splattsville (3's lobby) had so many storefronts and alleyways that are completely empty. It's a beautiful hub but everything not in view when you boot up the game feels pointless especially now that there's an alternative to it entirely.

At the very least, the smallest thing they could’ve done to make it better was to just have a pre recording of Inkopolis News on the TV on top of the studio. AT LEAST. They added new dialogue AND animations for ever single character already…! I was hoping for the Amiibo functions as well but I knew for a fact Nintendo wasn’t going to do that. On top of that, it’s so immersion breaking when I’m supposed to be in a city miles away from Splatsville but when I walk outside of Grizzco, I’m looking at the door in Splatsville, are you serious?

In at least Splatoon 1, Spyke was British in the NA version, but spoke completely differently in the UK/European versions. I think after 2, the translations became more aligned with the NA version overall.

Bro, this is a wave in like a wave from a *lake*. It's ridiculous that this is being called "wave" of content like it's some expansion or something. Also, slow ass quarterly content updates are fucking stupid, and don't work with player retention. The past 2 games we got a new weapon every week, and we got more battle music in the first 3 months. We're about *6* months into 3's life cycle and we're still listening to the same goddamn 6-8 songs on fucking repeat. Most of the "new" content that we get isn't even *new*, it was all pre-made and is just being unlocked for us. We've had players who've datamined and used clothes that we're going to get *later on* this fucking year, like post Fresh Season even.

I actually love the new inkopolis DLC. If you compare it with the WIIU version it's actually quite different. The old stickers that were present in the Splatoon 1 are starting to fade out and they've stuck new stickers over them in many locations. They've added quite a lot of Easter eggs from the WiiU version, so it's probably more of a nice call back for people who have been playing Splatoon since the first game and remember what the town looked like back then.

My reaction is the same, it's underwhelming. I plan on holding off to see what the Wave 2 will bring as this does not justify the price so far. It's essentially a hub skin. Would have been cool to see a side by side to see how much improved it is compared to the original.

So the messed up part is that the squid sisters aren't giving you the news in inkopolis, nor can you really see them in a new story mode on inkopolis. They wave at you, that's it. It really feels like they make no impact or excitement whatsoever. They're just kinda there. And what's worse is, they even have added the inkopolis news song in the game. Which are not hosted by the squid sisters.

That I knew from the direct itself. Glad they basically made the first DLC to be completely optional and not game affecting. Sure, there was work involved, to do Inkopolis and bring in the Squid sisters and all to this new engine, plus all the polish and such to make this work smoothly; but it is very cosmetic. For me, the real DLC, is wave 2. Given how incredibly awesome the Octo Expansion Story Mode was, that's the wave that excites me most. If they added the old mini-games in or something, that might have had a bigger impact in terms of a cool extra thing to mess around while waiting for the main event of the DLC.

Yes but that is not DLC/Inkopolis related. The new weapon kits, maps and specials are all part of a seasonal free update that everyone gets no matter what.

For Wave 1, I think it is awesome they added Inkopolis, new shop owners and old, and they even have the new/old characters in Tableturf to play against. What they have added is great so far, and the Jukebox has LOTS of songs which you can preview with Y with many returning from Splatoon 1 and we finally have band names and song names for Lobby songs, Campaign songs and others. Very cool, also proves that Mr Grizz DID capture Turquoise October then Fuzzified them into Octoplush. SplatNET 3 has new updates out and coming too. For Tableturf you can't play against random players yet, it will only allow you to play against Friends on your list as far as ive played around with it. You get an awesome Squid Sisters banner(FINALLY) with getting the DLC, and I assume we will get an Off the Hook banner with Side Order or a future expansion. All n all the benefit of Inkopolis is to compartmentalize all the interactive elements in the cities just like how Inkopolis Square was even smaller. What sucks atm(Feb 28th) is there isn't any real reason to use it outside of seeing Inkopolis, the new/old shop keeps, Spyke, and seeing Callie and Marie talking at their news room. Again it is cool to go back to Inkopolis(or visit it for the first time for many), I love the music and everything but Splatsville is our new homebase and goes along with the main story, Splatsville is a bigger and more interesting hub world to adventure and look around overall. I don't hate Wave 1 at all, but I would have much preferred for the devs to have expanded Splatsville with adding and opening up more areas like shops and adding NPCs to interact with. We traveled ALL the way to the Splatsville in the Splatlands because we are on a distance adventure in a new and exciting area with crazy and chaotic turf wars, a mix of old and new ways. But going back to Inkopolis is honestly pointless it feels and takes away from Splatsville and the whole point of Splatoon 3. Im not trying to be negative, just giving an honest opinion. In its current state Wave 1 feels incomplete, I know the Fresh Season hasn't started yet but much of Splatoon 3 has felt rushed outside of animation and the campaign and im kinda not surprised I feel the same way about the current state of Wave 1. It makes no sense to why Callie and Marie would be there talking in their old news room but also they are in Alterna which is VERY far away watching over and exploring Alterna for more info and treasure. I will then assume when Inkopolis Square is added Pearl and Marina will be doing the same thing while they are also out and about? If they TRULY want to make Inkopolis(and for the future Inkopolis Square) worth it, then they REALLY need to make each place more than just a reskinned hub. Inkopolis needs more, Hel Splatsville needs MUCH more too. - One: on my list, the gear NEEDS to be on different rotations for each hubworld, otherwise there is very little reason to be there besides aesthetics and Splatfest. - Two: if they are going to have Callie and Marie actually be in Inkopolis then they need to be doing the news again. What is the point of them actually being there if all they are doing is talking to eachother and will give you a few different wave interactions. If we are in Inkopolis and we go to Alterna, then Callie and Marie shouldn't be there if they are in Inkopolis chatting. and if Callie and Marie going to be doing the news than it needs to be two NEW casters in Inkopolis. Now it would be interesting if the reason they are there has something to do with Side Order and possible clones and copies running around, whatever the reason the need to have it make some sort of sense. Splatoon 1 had Craig in Octo Valley watching over the area, Splatoon 2 had Marie and Callie watching over Octo Canyon you get the picture. - Three: I know they have added more to Inkopolis like Grizzco, Tableturf and such, but it needs to have more to explore as Splatsville needs too. I know the WHOLE point is for those to go back to Inkopolis from Splatoon 1 but this isn't a good enough excuse for me. Perhaps they should combine both Inkopolis and Inkopolis Square together into one big area since both locations are in the same city. - Four: they need to have new badges available for the new/old shop owners for us to obtain. I kinda wish we would get them already if the items are the same but if the item rotations are different then it would be a new way to give more purpose of being in Inkopolis to get new badges from the new/old shops owners. - Five: they need to have the original campaign available in Inkopolis for this who never got to play Splatoon 1. However they want to implement it, reliving the Captain's memory, a simulation or accounts you from read either given to you by Craig or Callie and Marie or the Captain himself. - Six: Similar to five, I would love to see the return of Amiibo challenge missions with the ability to unlock a new weapon skin like Splatoon 1 had since Amiibo's already let you unlock a gear set. This could also work with reliving the campaign from Splatoon 1 by making the levels challenge levels. How ever they would want to do it, by adding the original campaign or making them challenge levels it needs to be added to Inkopolis, whether for Wave 1 or from Amiibo. - Seven: Here is one similar to Callie and Marie being in Inkopolis, make NEW interiors for Inkopolis' Lobby, Grizzco, Ammo Knight's training room, and Shoal. It is SOOOO lazy for them to add Inkopolis but not even take the time to alter the interiors to match being in Inkopolis a whole DIFFERENT region and area. I understand WHY they didn't do that yet(or at all), because it would be very difficult to match people up if your lobby is different than another. But still, this goes back to the issue of "what's the point" why add a whole "new" hub if everything important doesn't change and nothing makes sense. At the VERY very least make the exits match the hub world they are suppose to be in, this also goes with any windows or views looking outside those areas, have them match the hub you are in. - Eight: Similar to three, but I would love to see the addition of NPCs around Inkopolis, along with Splatsville. It would be so awesome to talk to random inhabitants of both areas from adult and kid Inklings and Octolings, to jellyfish and other marine beings. Even if it was as simple as you click on them and they just say a few different phrase each time commenting on current events and fashion or whatever. It would help the world feel even more alive. - Nine: Minigames, we need the return of actual minigames and actually have our sea cucumber phones DO something more than they do. This is all I can think of for now to help improve the new/old hub and future hubs coming. I understand some of these might be more reasonable than others but Inkopolis and Inkopolis Square, NEED to have so much more attached with them to make them worthwhile and make sense. Otherwise, again, why not just expand Splatsville and let us explore the Splatlands. the new Hub should have been a Splatlands area. Again, Im not trying to be negative towards Wave 1 but it just needs so much more across the board and I hope we get so much more. There is a new huge glitch in the Lobby I found with Rollers. If you horizontally ink the Shell-Out Machine it will drop the framerate of the game. Now I don't know if this is just for you the player or if it affects others in a lobby waiting I will have to test it. Definitely go spread that info around. I've seen hackers already play around with new weapons and even show Horroroboros, looks cool.

They could have kept the minigames from the original game in Inkopolis. What about the original music from online battles in the first game?

I am entirely happy with what we got. I, as I'm sure most people probably think, see this first wave as a quarter of the DLC, with some order being the main DLC. It is THE side order to the main game. My only complaint is that we don't get Inkopolis News Time. Sticking with Anarchy SplatCast keeps me from my full Inkopolis conversion. Some may point to the lobby not being the original, but that's a give and take situation. I want my news. That's it. Otherwise, I'm getting my relative money's worth. You know. For Nintendo prices. I mean, if wave 1 is $5, did we really get 1/4 of the value of YIIK: A Post Modern RPG? Or the same value of Katamari Damacy accounting for it being a sale available for people who have bought atleast base Nintendo Switch Online?

I think with Kraken and other S1 weapon loadouts being added in Season 3, they wanted to add this too, but tacked it into the DLC

I love the addition of Inkpolis as someone who knew about the series since Splatoon 1 but only started playing when Splatoon 3 came out. I love the details that have been put into its port/recreation. However, if it was a DLC in its own I would've felt ripped off somewhat. But well, as someone who likes seeing stuff from the older Splatoon games + with the promise of future DLC wave, I'm happy nonetheless.

putting this into perspective, the only thing we got in octo expansion was a singleplayer campaign and new playable character. It was the same price as well (edit; 5 dollars extra which isn't that much more really). I think framing it as its own wave is kinda weird... but considering we're getting this, a campaign, and likely the splatoon 2 lobby too, all for the same price, it's not that bad imo.

Calling this wave 1 is the problem. Calling it a preview or a freebie for buying Side Order would’ve gone over much better. If they wanted to call it wave 1 they should’ve included a bunch of other low effort stuff from the first game like weapon skins & battle music

I knew from the moment this was announced that Nintendo would do the bare minimum and just make it a cosmetic change so never planned on buying it. I’m just as nostalgic about Splatoon 1 as anyone else, I even bought that game the same day it released in the states, but I refuse to spend $25 for a simple cosmetic change, it doesn’t seem worth the price. Maybe things will be different with the story dlc but we’ll just have to wait and see.

I was so excited for dlc during the direct, for that hype to be just inkopolis was really disappointing, it's definitely an odd decision to position this as wave 1 but, I have no doubt that side order will be great. I reckon they're bringing back everything from previous games bit by bit, the Splatoon 2 plaza will be added too for sure. Bit concerned though that side order has a planned release date of Dec 2024

They could add to it in the future Features I want or expect: Squid sister amiibo do performances (super duper easy just do it) Splatoon 1 campaign (doubtful) Squid sister news broadcast (not that hard either) If they don't update inkopolis anymore give us the square as well (wave 2 maybeeeee?) It's a start, they got this out somewhat fast, let's see if they kick it up a notch.

I knew where to set my expectations based on the way this portion of the DLC was presented at the Direct/talked about after, but if they at least added Splatoon 1's mini games and gave the stores a different set of gear from the same overall available pool then I would've bit. I know during a splatfest, if you spawn in Inkopolis, you get Callie and Marie performing. It does surprise me that you don't get Callie and Marie doing the news, but maybe they had an issue with getting their voice actors back (they obviously have all their songs recorded already, so they aren't needed for Splatfest. They MIGHT have more to come from this hub in the future, who knows.

They should have allowed like a new story in inkopolis like what happened after captain agent took down everything in splatoon 1 or just add the splatoon 1 story back. Also they should have added more since this is supposed to take idk like 10 years after splatoon 2 plot line so like add some new things to do like that old squid game during the lobby waiting area and make the place feel special and worth it instead of just making it like an extra place to go if u just wanna see it

I get it’s just a thing to be tacked on to stall for time for side order to be completed but like They could’ve done so much here and the position as “wave 1” of a larger expansion made me think it’d be way more substantial.
