Marina isn't just black by skin color, she's also coded as a black woman, and this kind of exchange is common for that demo. When insulting a woman like her in a subtle or cultural norm style way, she'll retort with an earnest energy that fully diffuses the situation and frustrates the person trying to get at her. It's why Marina interrupts on the "It's getting late" line, saying she can do it all day. Then Pearl sees that skill and admires it with the next line because it compliments her brash personality. I really love this pair.

Leave, you're wasting my time (or alternatively, 'isn't it your bedtime?')." While Shiver is passive aggressive, Marina is shutting her down by pretending to take them as compliments. Additionally, she's being sarcastic, which is shown through the tone of singing (same tone as Shiver's) and the way the subtitles are emphasized. "You're *far* too kind. I *love* your vibe. I could learn *so much* from your style." She also says that she can go on all night long, implying that Shiver can't.

In love with Marina and Shiver's part- A lot of people think Marina doesn't get that Shiver is being passive aggressive, but I don't think that's the case (she's smart, and they're literally having a rap battle). The most savage way to deflect passive aggression is by taking it as a genuine compliment. If the subtle jabs don't get under your skin, you've won. (And Marina's lines, while far sweeter, are also a bit passive aggressive: "I can learn so much from your style"? True, and softened by the fact Marina most likely genuinely likes Deep Cut - but she never said Shiver's style was better. Or even good.)

Bless your heart" and then adding that Shiver is only fueling her, implying that she should give up now. Once Shiver tries to tell her to leave, Marina's line is clearly a flex: "I could go on like this all night long". Marina is being just as mean but better. She's more subtle in a stereotypical mean girl way. She knows what's going on and isn't taking it. It's even better because unlike the other three, she does it in a way that really gets under Shiver's skin/deflects all her comments until she straight-up tells her to leave, finally giving up the nice facade. Marina isn't a genius for nothing and Pearl was damn right to acknowledge it. She destroyed Shiver in a way that won't allow her to be angry. On the other side, while Frye is more ruder and makes better jabs, Pearl is above it, even allowing a whole verse to her girl instead of trying to get at Frye. She's a star and she knows it. SHE has nothing to prove and can do whatever she wants (esp important because of the context of the song). This makes Shiver and Frye petty and rude in general while OTH is above them and looks better in general. We know Deep Cut LOVE their publicity stunts and aren't above using drama for clout so they made themselves look bad on purpose. There's a whole logic to it that fits pretty well with the characters!

Too many people think that Marina is just being nice or oblivious. If you listen to the lyrics AND the singing, you can see why this isn't true. Listen and hear that Marina's first verse uses almost the exact same notes as Shiver's. Her lyrics say "I love your vibe. I can learn so much from your style." Marina is being sarcastic and showing that she can sing something better than Shiver can. That's why Shiver then says "Octo see, octo do." She's saying Marina is just copying her and isn't original. Then in Marina's 2nd verse, she says "Thanks to your notes, I'll find my groove!" This part is multi-layered and honestly impressive. On the surface it sounds like she's genuinely thanking Shiver for the feedback and will improve. In reality, "your notes" refers to Shiver's music notes in her 2nd verse, and "my groove" refers to how Marina doesn't copy Shiver this time. She builds off what Shiver sung and shows that she does have her own skill and originality. Marina's 3rd verse is most obvious. She's saying that she can sing like this all night long, implying that Shiver cannot. This is why Pearl concludes with "Had enough yet?" It's because Marina was fighting back the whole time. This is Marina's turf! She ain't no pushover!

Shiver and Frye just went full-on gangster rap. I really like the idea that Big Man is constantly having to rope them in because they get dangerously close to doing things that probably shouldn’t be broadcasted over a staple news network. Kinda matches how casual they are with their lines on the Splatcast - the other idols were smart enough to stay quiet about their role in the story modes, but Deep Cut just kinda dropped the bombshell that not only do they personally know the Squid Sisters, Marie is now their boss out of nowhere.
