The West Mansion was one of the very first websites I ever stumbled across back in the dial up days. It was mind blowing as a teenager to find this tiny section of the internet dedicated to an obscure little game series I loved, but which none of my friends had ever heard of. I still love the games to this day and revisit the website from time to time. Thanks for the memories, mate.

I’ve played the arcade exactly one time, at some pizza place in lacrosse Wisconsin in the late 80s or early 90s. It was glorious. I felt queasy as shit after playing, but I spent my allotted quarters on that one machine. It’s a great memory tbh.

I remember as a kid I traded my Adventure Island to the only other kid in school with a TG for Splatterhouse because he said it was too scary for him. I had to hide it from my parents when I played it because I knew if they saw the violence they would take it away. There was a loose slat of wood on the bottom of the tv stand I used to hide it in, along with some VHS tapes if ya know what I mean.

@@darthkai8242 I mean the TG-16 version was never going to have a perfect port (stupid censorship and changing of the mask aside for sure the Japanese version is still better in that regard though). It's funny to me that the Genesis would get a great/superior sequel (and then a third one which is pretty cool too I guess) I do find it sad that in the 30ish years since the third game came out there would be a large gap with nothing in the splatterhouse games then the PS3/360 version then nothing again. It's been 10 years and I get the distinct feeling we're never going to see a splatterhouse game again.

Yeah I actually went looking for a copy of the 2010 game after seeing this video and realizing I really wanted to play those original games. The price has gone up considerably and stayed up which is annoying. Sure if you can find a copy at GameStop it's like five bucks but everywhere else it's like an average of about 20 or more. After some looking around and checking various places I ordered one, disc only no instructions, no art just a generic DVD case that clearly came from gamestop ironically.

Same here. I would see comic book ads for it, which really got my interest, but I had never even met anybody who had a Turbo Grafx. I eventually bought a used one when I was in my 20s, probably. The first game I went for was Splatterhouse. It is not an easy game. It isn't long, but it is tough. I did beat the thing once on the Turbo Grafx. I think I was on my last life of my last continue when I got through it. The toughest level for me was the second to last level, with the weird bubble/embryo things that cling to you.

Excellent review and look at an important piece of gaming history! I got my TurboGrafx a little late in the game, in 1992 when it was marked down to $99 with Bonk’s Revenge and Keith Courage. It was awesome to see the vibrant colors and large sprites in comparison to the NES I had. Splatterhouse was one of the games I wanted badly, but just could never find it in stock. And at that time, I think Toys R Us was the only retailer within 100 miles that even carried Turbo games and hardware. I was finally able to pick it up a year later, and still to this day it is one of my favorite games on the system. It’s also my favorite of the series.

Although I ended up getting a Turbografx-16 because of other cool-looking games (mostly Legendary Axe, Bonk's Adventure, and... admittedly... Keith Courage, as a friend who got the system before me had those games), Splatterhouse was my go-to for those nights when I had no idea what to play, but wasn't in the mood for one of my beloved RPGs. I used to be able to beat this game on a single life (despite always giving myself 5 lives in the options every time... or was it 5 hearts? Hmm... it's been a long time). One of the best of the system, and definitely the reason I ended up getting (and beating) the 2010 release of Splatterhouse. To this day, I still listen to the OST from this particular port of the game because I consider it to be the best (short of some really awesome remixes out there). Funny enough, I never really played Splatterhouse 2 or 3 for the Sega Genesis, mostly because they were never available at Blockbuster.

I had great times with Splatterhouse. I got it as a birthday present in 1992 and you couldn't pry that game off my hands. It wasn't until a few years ago, that I found the arcade version at an arcade in my city. Both the PC-Engine and TurboGrafx did a great job porting this game. Of course, the PC Engine is better for the reasons you mentioned. Any criticisms are overblown, given that this is an arcade game. It's supposed to have simple gameplay, which I think gets too much flak in 2020, because of how complex games gave gotten over time. I have beaten this game many times, both at the arcade and TurboGrafx, also without continuing. Stage 6 is still a major pain in the ass, because of the randomness of the fetus monsters. Great job as always.

The PC Engine may be _technically_ an 8 bit machine, in terms of its CPU, but it goes well beyond the capabilities of stuff like the NES or Master System. It was the same generation as the Mega Drive and SNES, and especially with add-ons it had a graphical and sound system able to compete on equal footing, or near it, with those platforms. As, naturally, the graphics and sound hardware contributes more to the presentation than the CPU. It was a glorious machine, and while I don't find much of its library that interesting (though certainly better than the Neo Geo's library), I can't deny how cool it was. Especially when they brought out a handheld version of it!
@dariusq88944 жыл бұрын
The TG16 port of Splatterhouse is good enough, but now that the arcade version is more available I definitely recommend that. The graphic fidelity & sound are obviously higher and the difficulty is also harder. If you're really into collecting, the X360/PS3 remake also has Splatterhouse (arcade) and 2&3 (Genesis) as unlockable content.

@Ashitaka08154 жыл бұрын
Well it was rebooted in 2010, but it didn't sell well so they eventually gave up on it.
@zachreddy4 жыл бұрын
@@Ashitaka0815 Thats what I meant by ten years. But that one was in full God of War mode (like old GoW, not the recent one(which, incidentally, is also more Souls-y)); and while it did have some fans, the aesthetic was very much more like a nineties Image comic or a Limp Bizkit album cover than anything, y'know, scary. Your Soulses and Bloodbornes have a design sensibility that reminds me much more of classic Splatterhouse than that. I still maintain that a Soulslike would be the best modern equivalent for a single-player methodically-paced horror-themed brawler like OG SH, and I don't even enjoy Soulslikes that much.
@Ashitaka08154 жыл бұрын
@@zachreddy I didn't say it's a bad game, actually I have this one myself and quite like it, despite it's bad reviews (never gave much about some wannabe game expert telling me what I have to assume as "good"). But I also have no problem in admitting that I'm in a minority with that opinion. As long as I have my fun with it, I don't care. Many of my fondest gaming memories are with games with some lacking components, it often gives them a certain charm.
@zachreddy4 жыл бұрын
@@Ashitaka0815 Oh I wasn't saying it's good or bad either, to be clear; I haven't played it. Just that the design sensibility didn't seem as creepy as the old games. Yeah, I imported this for my PCE back in the day, and while it was cool due to the "horror" theme, I really never cared for the game play or game in general. If the game is really good, the theme should be able to be changed out, and still be a fun interesting game. If the "horror" was changed to something else that wasn't so shocking, would most still love this game?
