That's like the opposite of jank. It's a rather elegant solution. It's counting animation cycles. If it didn't the only other real option would be to have a dedicated climbing animation for each ladder. Instead you just define per-ladder how many times the animation is supposed to play.

What you're talking about is probably how it works in games where ladder climbing is a single uncontrollable action. Using trigger boxes allows the map designers to just pop down a box without having to assign ladder length parameters to every single ladder in the game while also preventing issues that arise when animations don't play properly. This is all my opinion btw, I'm not a professional dev.
