Carolina Beach Ocean Buoy

They always make this sound. I grew up in Brittany (France). Those buoys sound always creeped me out at night when I was a kid.

Cool find! It's definitely a whistle buoy that broke free from its anchor. Normally the movement of the waves would push air up the middle pipe that extends beneath the float making a deep moaning noise. I'd assume the US Coast Guard would have come and picked this up from the beach by now. Looks like the buoy was deep in the sand but there definitely is a danger of it rolling and crushing whatever is in its path. Definitely don't see this every day up close, I know theres one at the Smithsonian

Its a whistle bouy and yes every time the pipe fills with water it makes that sound in the bobbing wave action . Just a signal bouy

I didn't realize they were that big until seeing this one close up. Out far away in the ocean, they look smaller than that from a distance.

Lol it’s a whistle buoy, yes it’s supposed to make that sounds, that’s sea water entering and leaving a tube whistle inside it. That way ships know it’s nearby

The buoy itself does not weigh 18,000 lbs. The concrete block that is chained to it, called the "sinker" is what is 18,000 lbs.

lol, I came here from a bouy video. Apparently they Do always make that sound. As the bouy bobs up and down, water moves inside that tube, moving air through a whistle. Supposedly it can be heard from miles away.

moast likely this whistle buoy broke loose from its mooring in a strong wind its quite rare for this to happen did you notice on the base it had a tube thats what makes the sound the whistle is located under the light on the top of the base

We had a buoy that washed ashore in France too. It was a green one. I went on the top too!

most likely this whistle buoy broke loose from its mooring in a strong wind Storm and the sound you are hearing is the sound of the water passing through the tube at the base of the buoy it normally would be waves that force air through this tube making the strange noise you were hearing as the waves hit it base also it's quite rare for one of these things to break loose from its mooring point so the Storme must have been quite strong

@lmoore3rd Thanks for the comment, it was pretty amazing to see up close. I wondered if it was designed to be making that sound. How near a buoy would you have to be to hear that if you were in an ocean going ship?

Yes. Called a whistle bouy.

They are meant to be heard from miles away. The sound signals like this one has are for bigger ships, and so they can be located at night time.

Its from the waves going in the tube on the bottom. It's a nonmechanical whistle.

Interesting find...i dont think someones stolen the light - not all of them have a light! Ocean going ships use radar and probably dont need fogsignals much anymore. I imagine the whistle is louder in rougher seas, but i dont know? Ive never heard one before!

Jonny Waldes the buoy isn’t 18,000 lbs, it’s a The concrete and steel block, with the chain, so it stays where it is supposed to be, obviously it’s anchor broke
