My love of all things Finn began when I saw Split Enz at Imperial College, London on 27 November 1976, just a few weeks after beginning my degree course there. (I think Neil had joined the band by then.) I joined the BBC in late 1979 and worked at Television Centre as a studio engineer for several years - this edition of TOTP was recorded there. I worked on many TOTPs (usually recorded on a Wednesday) including some editions we did live, but I don't recall this show so it was probably a shift off day for me. Fun times. And all these years later, I'm now (30 Aug 2017) catching up with Neil's recent Infinity sessions on KZbin. Thanks, Neil and Tim.

Ah! Thanks for the correction, Paul. The Griggs name rang a bell with me as being connected with the band. My parents bought me the UK release of Mental Notes (all very confusing with the different releases of Mental Notes/Second Thoughts) for my December 1976 birthday and I figure I'd remembered the name from reading the sleeve notes - but maybe not if Nigel joined in 1977 (it's all a long time ago). The concert was memorable for so many reasons, not least the "spoons" solo with the strobe light; here was a band that was definitely going to get my attention!

It's a shame the producers didn't allow them to play live instead of lip syncing. As a sound engineer myself I would have found that to be such a deflating aspect of the job.

I’m still trying to wrap my head around it.
