Changing gears from low range 1,2,3,4 to High range 5,6,7,8 on the short drive from the M4 junction 17 to Chippenham on the 303. I have driven this Scania from new for roughly seven months, it is fitted with a clutch saver that basically limits the acceleration which is very noticeable on hill starts with a full load. Apart from that its a nice smooth truck to drive. I have just uploaded another video showing the standard way most drivers will use the split shift gears, please check it out

It depends on the truck, if its not struggling to pull away in third when empty then it will be fine, personally I would use a block change and go 2,4 flip it up 5,6,7,8. The 1st gear is really a crawler gear when carrying a full load and is not usually required to move off with an empty truck. I do have a video on here showing a block change in a DAF Truck, you might like to check that one out.

I would advise anyone who is having an assessor sit in with them to go though all the gears in the correct order, they like to see you doing that because it will cause less wear on the clutch and gear box in general even though it is a pain in the backside going through every gear in busy traffic, roundabouts, traffic lights etc. Talk yourself though each gear (in your head) as I do in the video, that way you can keep track of the gear that you are in, hope that helps regards Alan

Drove an FH12 Globetrotter XL 3 over 3 with split switch back in 98,one of the easiest lorries I ever drove.It was a great truck,leather interior,double bunk,plenty of room,could stand up straight on the engine hump with room to spare.For sheer enjoyment I liked the Atkinson Defender,71 with Gardner and DB 6 speed,the exhaust sound was music to my ears.

Yes, you can change down down to the low range or up to the high range from any gear to any gear if you so wish. I wouldn't advise going from 6 to 2 without bringing the speed down via the breaks otherwise that move will be too severe and may cause the load to shift etc because of the sudden difference in speed. If you have to brake sharply then do just that, then put it into low range once you have stopped.

Hi yes, this Scania has synchromesh gears which either involves double d clutch or revving the engine a little to ease it into gear depending on if you want to go up or down the gears, I was taught that way and rarely give it a thought, its just second nature.

a more normal shift sequence would be 2, 4 and then high range. I did that when I pass my test, and that was also how I did it during the trainings.

Yes, as you say, this is the normal way most drivers will use the split shift gears, my video is to show the process of using all the gears, this is recommended if you have a full load or very step hill otherwise you may shorten the life of the clutch.

I know what you mean when you're not used to it it can throw you a little. I basically use 2 - 4 in the low range then flip up into the high range and treat it from that point as if I was driving my own car ignore the fact that it is 5-6-7-8, just drive in the high range as you would in a car, You only need to drop down when starting off or slower driving.

The high or low range will only be engaged once you pass through the neutral position, you should be able to hear a 'clunk' as it goes in, so if you know in advance that you are going to slow down then you can be in say 5th and flip the switch down in ready for the change, it will only drop into low range as you pass through neutral on its way to say 4th, and vice versa if you know in advance that you will be change from the low to the high range.

Say i was in 6th gear and had to brake sharply and needed 2nd to move on, could i flick the switch to low range while in 6th and then go to second or do you have to be in 5th to switch into low range like in the video? I'm starting my Cat C training very soon and want to have a good knowledge of everything before i start.

The lowest gear in this truck is the 1st gear or is there another lower gear named "LO" or "Crawl"??? Coz in some trucks I've seen a LO gear, followed by 1st,2nd,3rd...

if truck is empty do you still pull of with 1st gear or 3rd gear

are your gears synchro or not? It sounds like you are using the clutch on every gear. I do not know if that is just for the video sake, or if the gears require it. Here in the US most big trucks have non synchro gears so with the exception of starting off and coming to a complete stop, we really do not use the clutch, we just float them in.

at 230hp it should be a 9 liter 5 cylinder engine a P230

All I know is it's a Scania 230, I have changed jobs and no longer drive this truck, sorry I can't help you any more than that.

It is 'thick plank's' like you that can't even spell "Dumb" or "Ass" that give drivers a bad name, if you had taken the time to read the description or watch the video properly you can clearly see that its an exercise in how to go through 'ALL' the gears 1 through to 8, If you want to see a video showing a 'block change' then I have one one here doing just that, I suggest you watch it you might learn something ...you 'Dumb Ass'
