There should be a new rule but only for bowling on string pins called the string interference rule meaning that the spare does not count. Especially if they plan on using string pins for USBC competition.

That's ridiculous, it shouldn't count where strings wrapping a standing pin down. Let the actual pin physics do the work, Bowling Pins aren't designed to have Strings attatch to them. Here's my suggestion for USBC: Instead of Approving StringPins, how about financially support these proprietors so they keep can their business and Free Fall pinsetters for a long period of time.

​​@@tmtmtlsml If its a pin to pin contact, I would count it as a fall but if a standing pin snags down by a string, I request that standing pin for my 2nd Ball. I wouldn't accept this illegal garbage machine at all, Brunswick should just keep producing more GS-NXT Free Fall Pinsetters (the same machines Spectrum Lanes had in their VIP area), they're smaller and more effecient than older Free Fall Pinsetters.

My god ... Strings is very bulls..... REAL American Bowling is free-fall pins with a real machinery (82-70 AMF my favorite 😋). In France, lot of Bowling centers turn to string pinsetters, it's sad. Love your videos Packy 😎

The fact that they want to use string pins in competitions is obsurd. How are they going to verify shots? Have someone watching each lane to see if the strings knock it over? This shouldn't become the new normal in bowling :/

i can think of two ways to automate it with my moderate knowledge of software, mechanical and electronic engineering. 1: use motion tracking IR cameras positioned above the pins. if a large mass of pixels impact the pin zone the pin was hit. if a thin string causes the pin to exit the pin zone it's not valid 2: insert a magnet (personally i think they're already there with the way i play) where the pin sits, have a hall effect sensor in the base of the pin running on old school string based conductors up to the setter (these are what old telephones used, they are this strands of fibres wrapped in gold foil, they are ludicrously flexible).finally have pressure sensors attached to the pulley assembly for the string. if the pin leaves the magnetic field before the string is tugged, it's valid. if the pin leaves the field after the string gets tugged the pin is reset during the sweep phase those two don't cover every edge case. but freefall pinsetters dont see gutter hits so you still have to watch what's going on no matter what is in use

With string you're not only cutting the ENORMOUS electricity bill, you're also having to hire one less worker. Not hard to see why centers would be enticed to switch. If this was something that truly mattered to you, you'd be the one taking up that mechanic job or trying to design a less power-hungry, and cheaper to produce/maintain unit.

With free-fall, it's uncommon for shots (in tournaments at least) to go to review unless people are contesting that a player fouled. The only recent example of where a shot went to review and wasn't a foul was when DeeRonn Booker (2024 USBC Masters) had a late messenger take out the 10. It went to review and was ruled a strike because the Brunswick GSX pinsetter did NOT come down and touch the pin. That shot basically won him his 1st major. With strings, it becomes way more complicated that it needs to be. Even with it's flaws, free-fall will always be better than strings. The "pinsetter", strings in this instance are helping and preventing pins from falling naturally.
