Classic - I've only been fly fishing for about 50 years and I just learnt to wrap the tippet around the split shot. It was worth watching the video for just that!! Thanks Alex.

I catch more fish since I use split shots. And I you also can reach faster the striking deep when the drift range is short. Very useful accessory. And cheap! Thanks for sharing your knowledge about it. 😉

Split shot is critical to success. Most fish consume food under the water. Not off the surface. To be successful with nymphs it’s best to be on the bottom. We have an expression around here “if you not loosing flies you’re not catching trout”. I even put them on streamers to keep them below the surface when in current. Alex is an expert as most of us already know. He right about this too.

Thanks brother, like you said, most fish are eating sun surface so the sooner you get your head around that the better!

Hi Alex Mike here from Alberta Canada. Excellent vid on the split shot . Would just like to say I bought some Amplitude Smooth Infinity camo WF-6-F and just love this line. It's what you seem to always use in your vids so I thought I would give it a try. Like I say great line great vids Thanks.

Great info Alex, the ability to change weight quickly rather than the heavy bomb brigade, which ends up using too much weight in situations that don't need it and also a lack of sensitivity and missed takes.

I use weight putty, which is super easy to add on or remove as needed. Not all weight putty makes the cut. Loon's is too soft and sticks to everything, including the rod, and leaves a stain. I blend my own. Once the right consistency is achieved, I believe it's superior to split shots. And it doesn't damage the tippet or leader. I usually place the split shot about 20 inches above my top fly, above the tippet ring. The ring stops the putty from sliding down.

Funny, Loon's splitshot is terrible as well. Even using forceps to crimp down, they will come off while casting wayyyyyyy too easily.

This is great - thanks Alex. I'm seriously considering only using lightly weighted nymphs and split-shot. It would cut down on the number of flies I need to carry (and tie) in different weights and allow me to adjust depth more quickly as I move through different pools and runs. I will experiment this coming season 🤙

Good to see you Alex. Hope you and family are well. . Drawings were awesome 👌. Lol lol. I'd like to add having some idea of how deep the water your fishing helps.Cause that determines how long you make your leader. Also again depends what fly line you using 2. Plus what technique your fishing. Bung or straight line buzzer. Or just on the bottom. Gets technical. Any ways. Good vlog.

Super helpful. Been fishing for a while now and I know it’s an essential part, but I’m always a little unsure of where to put it and how much. Do you usually start with a BB and go from there? I only have the one size….should I buy a pack with multiple sizes?

You sometimes talk about leaving the tag ends long and putting the split on that, when and how do you do that?
@dutchkissling2439
@dutchkissling2439 11 ай бұрын
This is exactly what I thought the video would be about. I also remember him talking about that being his preferred method to keep from damaging the line. Also another benefit is if they hang up on bottom you typically only lose them and not your fly rig.
@dutchkissling2439
@dutchkissling2439 11 ай бұрын
I’ve been adding a 2-3” tag to the eye of my point fly with a lighter wt line and adding the split shot to that. The downside is it can get tangled up around the fly but I feel it’s still a better method than attaching the split shot directly to the tippet.
