SPOILER ALERT! DO NOT read or watch this if you don't want 'Split' Spoilers! SPOILER ALERT! DO NOT read this if you haven’t seen Split!
-------
We mean it! Spoiler Alert!
M. Night Shyamalan has been talking about the surprise at the end of his new film Split, where David Dunn - Bruce Willis’s Unbreakable character - is revealed. And it turns out that James McAvoy’s Split character was actually supposed to appear in that film!
Speaking in the above video, Shyamalan explains: “This character was from Unbreakable, but I pulled him out of the script. I had a difficult time trying to get the balance right between the three characters - Elijah, David Dunn and him. In the original Unbreakable, he was the antagonist, and they were going to meet. And I couldn’t get it right. This is so provocative that he was pulling from this movie that I wanted to make - a very quiet, origin story.
“Then I got this idea to do a movie as a psychological thriller, then at the end, you realise you were watching an origin story, and everything goes click.”
Shyamalan goes onto reveal that he struggled with the Willis reveal before settling on the diner scene, and also explains where he is at with the Split/Unbreakable sequel. Which we reckon he should call Unsplittable.
Split is currently in cinemas.

Is this based on Elijah's first comic book he received from his mother at the park. It was a hero fighting a BEAST...my mind is now blown. 17 years later we now know the origin of the BEAST, the villain who is a force that can compete with David. The beast praises the broken, but despises the UNBREAKABLE. Elijah had nothing to live for, but to find a hero. Maybe now he wants to put on a show, and instigate a fight between the Beast, and David. Elijah is the creator of heros, and villians. The Beast lost his father in a train accident which I assume Elijah blew up in trying to find a hero. M. Night, you are a genius. Please stick with what you're doing with the Unbreakable story. And if you need me to be a part of your movie, I will.

@Wolf-xb8bo

Neel Moudgil So I also thought of a scene when David bumped into a woman, and a child. That woman abused that child. It's when David went to the train station at night for his first night watch as a hero. That could have been Kevin (Beast) at the time. I also believe that the beast isn't fully the beast yet. I think he needs to eat more to become his full potential; that's why the gunshots put him down to the ground. But every villain has a weakness, and the beasts weakness was saying Kevin's full name but that only stopped him once. There might be another weakness we don't know about.
@mephistovonfaust
@mephistovonfaust 7 жыл бұрын
Great theory except the eating to become bulletproof and the part where you assume Elijah blew up the train with Kevins Dad in it is already pretty much confirmed. I mean it was on a train in Philly 16 years ago... Split plays in 2016 and Unbreakable was 2000, so I'm pretty sure there wasn't a second big train crash in the same year and we know from the ending of Unbreakable that Elijah blew up that train.
@Wolf-xb8bo
@Wolf-xb8bo 7 жыл бұрын
derKampfschimmel I could have totally misheard two parts, but I think he said the beast has long hair when he was describing it at the dinner table with the doctor, and he didn't, so that could mean he is not fully at his potential. Also, I think the Doctor said back to him that the beast isn't real, and he doesn't have to feed off of 10 innocent children in a way Like he told her this info before. I can be totally wrong. I haven't had the chance to watch the movie again. I've been trying to find the script, so I can read through it. Elijah blew up one train as we know it, an apartment building on flames, and there were other things he did on the wall of his gallery. He could have done a lot more before the train bombing that we don't know about.
@mephistovonfaust
@mephistovonfaust 7 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you on the second part there but we know that Kevins Dad died on the train. You could be right about the feeding part and that that is Shyamalans plan but still I think that would be a little silly but very well possible. I'm not saying that you are wrong but I hope you are, just because I wouldn't like that angle.

I don't see it as brilliant at all it's just an option he had since he owns the IP, it's like people think all tarantino movies are connected, well Shyamalan just aknowledge 2 of his are, I don't know people lose their sht with fanservice, for me if it doesn't work written it's not good story telling I don't see how could you do a reveal like this in a book...That being said I liked the movie, and I am looking forward for the next one.

Wow... That's twice he surprised us with the same movie franchised. First, with unbreakable looking like a mystery/supernatural movie, but then turning out to be a powerful superhero movie. And now this, where the movie looks like a horror flick, but its actaully an ORIGIN STORY IN THE SAME UNIVERSE. Lastly, I just want to say I reeeally liked the little hint on the movie posters. It has cracked glass... That's the Hordes strength... He's multiple peices... But David's character is the OPPOSITE! He's one strong solid entity... Unbreakable! Damn that's good writing right there. Hope it all comes together now that people are actually looking forward to more of this.

So, I had to leave my full time job early on the day for a doctor's appointment the movie came out, but had to go to my other job later, so I decided to go see a random movie to kill the time in the late afternoon. I hadn't read any spoilery reviews, and I wasn't a big fan of most of the Shyamalan movies post-"Signs"--"Lady in the Water" is one of the most ego-flogging things I have ever seen--but I heard good things about this, and figured it was worth $8. I liked the movie on its own merits. James McAvoy's performance (performances?) were exceptional, and that alone made for a really fun thriller. But "Unbreakable" is one of my favorite movies of all time. I'm a huge comic book nerd, and 2000 was the beginning of the new wave of comic book movies as blockbusters; that was the year that X-Men came out, and Spider-Man went into development. "Unbreakable" deconstructed modern gritty superhero reboots before they were a thing. So I lost my shit in a mostly empty movie theater during the tag scene. I knew the score cue immediately, and I started applauding like an idiot when Bruce Willis showed up. I can't wait for the next movie. So much fucking fun.

David Dunn - Superman Elijah Price - Lex Luthor Kevin/Horde - Doomsday All in keeping with Unbreakable's concept of modern day super heroes being exaggerations of something real. Elijah specifically mentions that there are two kinds of villain. The one that fights the hero with his body (Horde) and the one that fights the hero with his mind (Mr. Glass). The truest threat is always the Mastermind style of villain which leads me to believe that in the third film somehow or other Elijah will play both sides of the David vs. Kevin conflict. On one hand Elijah is invested in David's success since he knows that in order for his life to have purpose there needs to be a hero to play the opposite to himself as the villain. On the other he has to act like a villain in order to BE a villain so I can only assume he'll manipulate in some way to help Kevin defeat David. Maybe sharing his weakness to drowning?

Glad I never read anything about this movie before finally seeing it last night. I recognized the same instrumental music from "Unbreakable" at the end and thought "He recycled the same soundtrack??" But for a clever reason...I didn't expect that ending what so ever. VERY cool. Might explain why Unbreakable is - or was - on HBO all through May. The one thing living in the Philly area is recognizing all the locations, I immediately noticed that was the King Of Prussia mall in the beginning. As "Dennis" leaves the gated area, the location of the skyline and the Schuylkill Expressway slightly down the hill, I suspected that was the Philadelphia Zoo he came out of. After a long string of so-so to very bad flicks IMO, glad M Night finally came out with a good one!

Make that sequel just as good as you can make it, M. Night S.. I can't wait to see what you do and how you pull it off. Either way, people are literally salivating for this to happen.

Kevin and his mother appear in Unbreakable near the 54min mark where the mom holding Kevin's hand, bumps into Bruce at the baseball game (right before he interrogates the drug dealer).

I remember him talking about his idea for an Unbreakable trilogy in the DVD special features of that movie back in the day and getting excited for that possibility. Hope he gets to make the third movie. Maybe The Orange Man was his replacement for Kevin/The Beast's role in Unbreakable.

Thats exactly how the villains should be portrayed. Like heroes they too have principles and conviction. Depicting these traits strengthens their personality, creating the necessity for the hero's existence.

As Split was ending I started to hear the score for unbreakable(as others have said). I thought I was going insane and then I saw the diner scene and that girl asked what the guys name was that had been in a wheel chair and I said "Mr Glass" right before you see Bruce Willis .I did not expect to see him at all,I felt like jumping up and down I was so happy. My wife asked how my old ass could remember what the hell the sound track from Unbreakable sounded like when it had been years since I had seen the movie. I told her that had been running it all month on HBO at the same time Split had come out on DVD.

I liked it, and didn't expect the link to unbreakable at the end, which was a movie I liked also. I guess he couldn't really have Bruce Willis turn up and save the day in this one, but would be good to see both characters clash in another movie.

I've seen many twists in movies and it didn't shock me. But the twist in split I was not prepared for. I am really happy and excited. It's amazing how just a couple of seconds at the end of this movie has told a much bigger story than what I had just watched lol. Make this movie and keep it going. The interesting part is Kevin is actually a good man with good and bad personalities. So not all good but not all bad. Really clever

I just saw this movie Yesterday!!!! OH MY Gosh... LOVED IT!!! My question is not about making a sequel to "Unbreakable" My question is WHEN you're going to be making a sequel to "SPLIT" ... Holy Moley... the ending is crying out for another chapter... Please make a sequel to "Split"... BTW... I wanted to buy a (copy) of the screenplay, to study it, because I am a screenwriter... and on eBay it was $250. (I'm crying) so sad.

The movie ended, the movie was pretty good, it was alright. It had some great moments... And then... In that final scene, I heard the music. I recognized it instantly. "I thought, are they being lazy? Are they just ripping off this theme?" No... it can't be. Then it hit me... This villain! This movie! The hints they had laid down... about disabled people, about possible human evolution, or advancement, the ever so subtle hints about "Super Powers" THIS... was a continuation of THAT world. And THEN... There he was, "Security Man" at the cafe, alive and well... and watching the TV. Ready to go out and catch "The Horde" Just like he caught "Mr Glass" and "The Orange Man"
